Meant to update, the kindling that was meant to arrive with my original order from Rathwood arrived last week. I didn't really need it as I chop up all of the crates the wood arrives in so I have bags of kindling in the shed. I'd given up on receiving it tbh.

check back the thread to the 12th and 13th of this month where it’s mentioned

    The internet isn’t for everyone

I have just purchased the 56 bags of Oak for €284 delivered. €10 discount on the cost as a new customer. Works out at €5.07 per bag, 25L at 10kg (hopefully). Boyle's 25L Oak bags are 7kg.

That's the same deal I'm looking at…can you do me a massive favour and measure the length of the logs please? I got logs from TJ Mahony that were too big, they were 29/30cm in length, hoping these ones are more similar to RW/Boyles size logs

Edit: not to worry, they got back to me themselves and confirmed 24-25cm so similar to RW/Boyles etc. I'll be ordering next week once I've enough space in the shed!

Just in case you're ordering the same deal (https://onestopfuel.ie/products/premium-oak-firewood-bags-56-x-25l-10kg-bags) , the site says the sale finishes on 26/01. Might be worth ordering and asking them to delay delivery?

Thanks for the heads up but somehow I missed this! Anyway not to worry, they've extended the sale to 06-Feb on their website. Including €29 fee of delivery (And minus €10 for their introductory voucher) all in all it's come to 56 Bags for €284 which on the face of it seems a great deal (€5.07 per bag)

Anyone with experience of Ash wood from Kildare Logs? Is it pretty dry stuff?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,656 ✭✭✭geographica

And on from this, I got my 2 crates delivered before xmas after waiting 9 months, the top crate was perfect, good sized logs throughout the crate, started into the second crate a couple of weeks ago and as reported before on this thread it's like glorified kindling, a lot of it is practically square oak, smooth, like table legs for furniture, weird, any logs are around the edges of the crate but when you get into it it's not great at all.

in anyhow, I'm done with Rathwood

I got a crate of Ash from Kildare logs at the end of October/begining of November. While I don't have much experience with firewood (first year with a stove!) it does appear to be quite dry and burns very well. I have a moisture meter somewhere, I can check if you'd like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,333 ✭✭✭Fabio

Ah no, thank you all the same, nice of you to offer! As long as it burns well, that's great. I know Ash can, technically, be burnt quite green but it'll be smokier and less efficient and, by law, sellers aren't meant to sell anything above 20% moisture content. I don't know how strict the authorities are on enforcing that.

I've had it in the past, it was excellent.

Only hitch was length of logs was a little more than 25cm and my fire box in the stove is small but otherwise good. I've had a few orders from them, they are good and they call you up and negotiate a delivery date though you might have to wait a week or two.

Another post re Rathwood and a reminder NEVER to purchase fuel from them -

I placed an order for a pallet of oak with them back in May '25 (originally due for delivery in September). I finally lost patience and requested a refund from them 4 weeks ago. Since then, I have gotten the runaround from their Philippines call centre and there is seemingly no way to contact the Irish store.

I notice now as well they are no longer selling pallets of firewood on their website. Who knows what's going on over there.

Praying now my mastercard chargeback goes through smoothly or I'll have to go through the hassle of bringing them to small claims court.

    Absolute chancers.

    It's unlikely you'll get a chargeback after 120 days

You'll most likely get a refund from RW but not until they stress the crap out of you

Try selecting all other options rather than the correct one when calling. I think the shop one has the best chance of getting someone local.

Was on the same boat, ordered Oak, waited a long time then I emailed them asking to send Birch instead as I saw it in stock on their website. Received email saying nothing is in stock and they have removed it from their website. This was about 2-3 months ago

I got a call about 10 days ago that they have Birch in stock and could deliver that soon. Received Birch 3 days after the call. Not the best quality this time but got a large ton bag for around 100. May be emailed them to send Birch instead.

Has anyone here ordered from some of the farmers on the likes of DoneDeal selling unseasoned wood? I'm thinking of getting an order delivered to Dublin and stacking/storing it for the next few months to dry out. Fraction of the cost of buying from the fuel distributors.

I had a birch tree in my garden cut down a few years ago as it was starting to die. It was cut into rings and I chopped it up and let it season for a year before burning it over the last number of years. Worked well

Buy most of my wood off done deal or adverts, and burn a lot.

The best deals I've got were in summer time from fellas who are clearing a site to build a house, and don't need the wood.

3 times, huge trailers of wood for feck all comparatively speaking.

With a great deal of luck, I finally got my money back. Through a BOI mastercard chargeback. After almost a year from the purchase date and after six months of getting the run-around from Rathwood.

Word of warning - never buy from those gangsters.

has anyone noticed a time of year that would be best to buy crates of firewood from a cost saving point of view? Would it be summer when there’s less demand, or does that make a difference?

It's very hard to predict these days. I think that's the way it used to be but who knows now with all that's going on. We just ordered ours for next winter now because we thought even if it doesn't go up anytime soon, it's most likely not going to come down at all. Whatever you do, don't leave it until the Autumn. There's always a jump when the fuel allowance starts or even a month or so before that.
