I can see why you are confused! I was too until last week. This is how I believe it works (but would welcome corrections!).

Some NI garages actively encourage purchasing from ROI. For a GB registered car, they are importing a car from GB and if someone from ROI wants to buy it, the charge you £300 for an SAD certificate. This is an official EU importation document.

    https://taxation-customs.ec.europa.eu/single-administrative-document-sad_en

This proves that the car has been legally imported from the UK and that all duties have been paid.

When you go to the VRT office to re-register the car, you will need the V5 and the SAD cert. The only charge is €11.20 for the tyre recycling charge. No VRT, import duties or VAT is due.

I am collecting my car on Saturday, but munsterfans2 has already done exactly this recently and this was his experience.

From what I can tell, the "3 months" debate refers to cars that do not have the SAD certificate.

Yep it has and apologies for asking. Believe me I've read back all through this thread trying to get it straight, but even saw a post from yourself saying you VRT'd a UK reg for free with little or no MOT documentation. Maybe that's a separate issue to VAT/Customs though.

Thanks very much for that. I think this Single Administrative Document(SAD) is the bit that's muddying the waters for me. Do you know if only some dealers are willing to do that? Others just can't be arsed or is there certain criteria that needs to be met? It felt like a bit of a PFO response when I called earlier.

Thanks again btw... and best of luck with your own!

i don't know which dealers are interested and which are not. I found the car that I wanted and the dealer told me about the SAD, so I didn't look any further.

Hi folks, I am looking at a car in Belfast with a private seller - the car checks out in terms of value. It has been MOTd in the north for the last 3 years, would I still need an SAD for it if it was originally registered in Sheffield, England?

Hi all - currently looking at a car at a main dealers in Northern Ireland. Car is an ex-demonstrator so owned by dealers from new, never in private ownership, is on NI reg & registered there new. It's just over 6 months old with a few days, has 9K Kms on the clock. Is this ok for avoiding VAT & customs - not sure if the main dealer ex-demonstrator has any bearing on it?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,150 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

Revenue say private ownership. That may catch you out?

I have brought in original NI car that was owned by a leasing company no issues. But may be worth a quick trip into the VRT office to make sure.

For the the 100th time, private ownership rule only applies to cars first registered in mainland UK and subsequently moved to NI

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 768 ✭✭✭Orebro

Thanks for that - I guess the wording on the Revenue website is what is throwing people, under the Importing from Northern Ireland section: "Proof will be required that the vehicle has been in private ownership for a reasonable period of time." - this would suggest buying a dealer ex-demo that they've owned from new wouldn't qualify with this rule.

So in my specific circumstance I'm good to go, without needing any of this import documentation stuff from the dealer?

Page 8 and Page 12 should put your mind at ease.

You are referred to the VRT section of revenues website which states...

"Proof that the vehicle was previously in use in NI prior to purchase includes:

the V5C showing the last registered keeper in NI and a date of registration to that keeper"

Even though a demo, as long as it's over 6 months old and more than 6,000km on the ODO it will be treated as used by Revenue. The fact that the vehicle was originally and only ever has been registered in NI also means it has only ever been registered in European Customs Union therefore no customs or VAT due.

was it a weekend , i think they do charge at the weekend to give themselves a buffer for providing a rate when markets are closed or just over the limit for the plan you were trialing

I did a £19,900 transfer on Friday morning and they charged about €25. Still far better than the 1.7% PTSB were looking for!

There’s still a fee for transferring to a uk account. I have the sterling bought from during the week to avoid the weekend fluctuations and even mid week there’s a fee for transfers from your Irish revolut to a uk account using the sterling.

There would be no fee if the seller had revolut or the business had revolut business. Then it’s just a revolut to revolut swapsiee!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,260 ✭✭✭Exiled Rebel

do you have to transfer it to Sterling? Why not just pay for it out of the Euro wallet and let the exchange rate be whatever it is the minute the transfer occurs?

Admittedly my revolut is the UK version, there's no fees for doing the above. It might be different for the Irish version.

Intend to keep an eye on the fluctuations and buy it to suit me. So in that 20k purchase I saved €200 buy buying the sterling the day before as the exchange rate jumped.

Of course that could go the other way too so you just have to use your own judgement.

If you have the euro in your account you can set buy order at a particular price so the order is executed on a dip … worth doing this and can save a few hundred euros opposed to taking the market price at a particular time

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 42,150 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

Yes that’s all good when you have the time to plan and sit on it alright. In some cases though you see a car Monday and you have to get it by the Friday so just have to pick your day. It may never reach the figure set in the buy order and could drop lower then before you buy.

At my level it’s only a couple of hundred here or there but agree if you were doing it for much larger amounts then you’d have to set up something a little more sophisticated.

Can I ask a question on finance owed flag on UK cars being sold via NI?

The last 2 I was looking at being sold by NI dealers, I've thrown the reg in to motorcheck.co.uk and both of them had an amber warning for expired tax (no biggie) but both also had a red flag for finance owed!

What are the implications here for buyers?

Is it standard practice for NI dealers to import UK cars that have Finance owed? Is it like a bridging loan that is covered during the sale or is it better to walk away?

I just find it strange that it showed up on the 2 cars I decided to run the check against.

They don't buy cars with outstanding finance. It's a stocking loan for the dealer. It's normal. It gets cleared when you buy the car. Irish dealers use them as well, rather than having millions of euro tied up in cars.

Thanks for that. That's handy to know. I reckon a lot of people are put off by these being flagged as red.

    Hi Novice question

Half thinging of buying used EV from the North

    Am I correct in saying

    if it is on NI (ie not mainland UK plates) from day 1, has less than 5k km miles on the clock, and older than six months ;

    no VRT, import duties etc

Is there a website, where I can put the plate number to verify if VRT , import duty, VAT etc

or can I call VRT office

Once I arrive to the VRT office (car in hand) what docs do I need to present

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,719 ✭✭✭✭User1998

It needs to have more than 6,000 km. You need an invoice and the V5

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭k123456

Forgot to ask, does it get complicted I buy is bought in NI, and has UK mainland plates , I dont have an exact EV in mind, but it will be used and 2022 to 2024 vintage, will be a full EV and not a Hybrid

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 Pushpen

I am in the same boat at the moment and have been following this thread for a while now. If you are buying a mainland car from NI dealer, you would need SAD document along with the V5.

Someone updated their polestar buying experience couple pages back. Mainland car bought from Saltmarine cars NI.

That was me... with sad there was no issue with uk reg polestar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 398 ✭✭tlaavtech

And I have just done exactly the same thing (based on Munsterfan2's experience - thanks!). Just waiting on the tax office to generate a code for the car. It looks like only the MY23 LR "Plus" version has a code so far and my LR car only has the Pilot Light package. VRT guy was very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful.

Ball park, how much you would typically save

if the car is 20 - 30 000 stg range

Is buying from a private not reccomended , and if

    not reccomended, why

I see mention of buying from garages quite a bit

I bought a Polestar 2 Long-range. A local garage is looking for €7.5k more for a similar spec standard range.
