VRT relief for EV's imported from Northern Ireland

I started looking at 2022 and 2023 EV's while looking at hybrids up the North and their VRT rates (no customs or vat)

Several EV's came back at zero VRT.

Minister states

that, until the end of 2023, electric vehicles can avail of relief on VRT. Battery electric vehicles with an OMSP of below €40,000 are entitled to a VRT reduction of up to €5,000, which has the effect of reducing their VRT to zero. A tapered relief applies for battery electric vehicles with an OMSP of between €40,000 and €50,000. There is no relief for higher value vehicles.

Electric vehicles and motorcycles

Series production passenger cars or commercial vehicles (VRT categories A and B) that are:

• powered only by an electric motor
• and
• registered before 31 December 2025

are eligible for relief from VRT up to a maximum amount of €5,000.

Vehicles with an Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) of up to €40,000 will be granted relief of up to €5,000. Vehicles with an OMSP of greater than €40,000 but less than €50,000 will receive a reduced level of relief.

Reliefs have been removed for any electric vehicles above €50,000.

Are you 100% certain about that? there are a lot of resources online that say VAT and customs are due, even from NI?

EV take up has been a lot slower up North than it has down here so I'd say there isn't a great selection to choose from.

A think part of the reason for the poor uptake is the poor charging infrastructure up there, this is improving rapidly though.

New vehicles brought into the State from another European Union (EU) Member State, including Northern Ireland (NI), are subject to Value-Added Tax (VAT). A new vehicle is one which is 6 months old or less, or has traveled 6,000 km or less.

Registering used vehicles bought in NI

A vehicle that has previously been in use in NI can be registered for Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) in the State, without liability to additional Customs duties and import Value-Added Tax (VAT). Proof will be required that the vehicle has been in private ownership for a reasonable period of time.

• From 01 January 2021, an import of a vehicle from GB is treated as an import from a non-European Union (EU) country.

• Before you import a vehicle from GB into the State you must complete a customs declaration and pay customs duty and if applicable Value-Added Tax (VAT) on the import value of the vehicle.

NI REG before or up to Jan 2021. as far as I was aware, anything younger that and you were exposed to full ‘shafting’ charges, be it EV, PHEV or any variant.

I bought a used vehicle up north a few years ago and it was exempt from vat and vrt. It was under a disabled driver scheme.

I have often wondered how it would work if I wanted to import an EV.

You can still buy brand new EV in the north and the dealer will refund you the VAT once you supply proof of payment in the republic.

As the protocol between Ireland and the North ensures there will be no hard border on the island of Ireland, the rules differ. If a car to be imported into Ireland is first registered in Northern Ireland after January 1, 2021, then it can be done without any checks on its customs status. In other words, current rules remain unchanged.

VRT is still payable on such vehicles. VAT is payable on new vehicles (under 6 months old) or those with less than 6,000 km.

When buying a new vehicle from Northern Ireland it is important to note that Irish VAT will need to be paid at the time of registration in the Republic. This could be in addition to UK VAT already paid in the North. A refund of the VAT paid in the North can be claimed from the dealer on the production of a receipt of VAT paid in the Republic.

If anyone does import from NI, you might get a better Exchange rate when transferring STG to the vendor, by not using your ROI bank and using a third party transfer company , A few years back, I imported an Ioniq, using either of my banks Ulster or PTSB to transfer funds would have been 700 eu more expensive
