Well at least we finally had a low that was able to move away to our east today, only took about 5 weeks for that to happen lol

Nuala talking about the big freeze on the One o'clock weather forecast.

Noticed the 6 counties doesn't have a yellow warning over it today.

Yesterday the whole island of Ireland was covered in a yellow warning for freezing temps .

Somebody up north must have told them hands off ;)

Not really. Thats the start of the hard freeze.

    Should be fun tonight.

Are things that bad now, that we define a 'glorious day' as one without rain and where the sun actual shows it's rarely spotted face?

When you've had constant drizzle for weeks, I guess we do.

I agree. I've always been pro Met Eireann and give them the benefit of the doubt due to the vagaries of forecasting. However, with the lack of any prior weather warning after what I witnessed last night on a return journey from Portrane to Killester, and the absolute swamping that costal Fingal took in general, I think Met Éireann is rapidly loosing public confidence. The heavy rain and prolific and at times dangerous spot flooding I drove through last night were the worst I've experienced in decades. Dublin City Council said one of their rain gauges in Finglas recorded 10mm in one hour. I'd wager that parts of north county surpassed that by some degree. I also get that the flood situation was exacerbated by the near continuous rain that's fallen for several weeks now, but the intensity of last night's rain should've been predictable in advance with the models available. Seeing a warning issued just after 2.30am smacks of bolting the proverbial stable door after the horse has bolted. An explanation for one not issuing much sooner is warranted.

That would be my take as well, as in my mind it has pretty much rained every day in January and February in Dublin, however Sryanbruen states that it didn't rain for the first two weeks in January?

Went for a run taking in some of the quays in what felt like gale force icy winds. Rain has gone but it's HORRIBLE out none the less.

It rained a few times, but in rather small amounts since before Christmas. It was from the 17th~19th January onwards (depending on where you live) that the rain began in earnest which led to flooding as it built up over the following days and weeks.

I selected four stations: Gurteen, Johnstown Castle, Oak Park and Dublin Airport. If you concentrate on the Winter (top right) graph, you can see all stations were fairly flat from mid-December to mid-January emphasising the little rainfall for that period. However, you can see all bar Gurteen have had lots of rain (compared to average) this winter, either side of the dry spell.

It gets flooded every few years. Usually when the bridge is blocked on the land side of the road. They were cleaning upstream of it every year for a few years but i guess you can clean trees off the bank as easy as you can cant clean of branches out of the water.

So we have 2 new yellow warnings since 11am TODAY:

    metie_130226.png

And looking at the temps down here in Carrigaline, Co. Cork - coupled with the rain tomorrow it will be FEELs Like -1 to -3

Was in the city earlier. Frequent strong gusts - peel the face off you :D

what were the international weather models showing yesterday or the day before for rain? i.e. were the models predicting the rain we saw?

just curious if hindsight is now 20/20 or would the models have justifed a yellow warning?

Yeah Dublin Airport only got 1.3mm of rain in the first 7 days and it didn't rain at all on 1, 3,4,5,9,12,15 January. The heavier rainfall started in mid January as you said but it wasn't until 21-Jan that they started recording more than 10mm for a day. 27-Jan recorded a whopping 30mm.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Moderate small hail or graupel shower here in Shankill, south Dublin.

Not being picked up with the Dublin radar being out of action of course.

    Temp 4⁰C.

This was a post from yesterday based on the UK Met office. On their radar you could see the intensity of the rain and longevity particularly from 4pm onwards and lasting throughout the night over the Northern, eastern and central parts of Ireland. I think the met eireann forecast is completely thrown since the new graphics started. The Meteorologist has a short time frame and presents the forecast to suit the graphics rather than the other way round.

Finally managed to get out with the dog in dry weather this afternoon so we went to our local park. That wooden "pontoon" you see in the picture, is actually a park bench 😂 - The swans have a new lake !

Didn't want to start a new thread for this, but any idea why 3 weather research aircraft from 2 EU countries (1 from Meteo France and 2 from Germany (DLR and TU Braunschweig) are all hanging around the same piece of ocean periodically for the last week or so?

The 3rd aircraft (just beside D-ADLR in the screenshot is D-ILAB).

Is there something we should know like? :)

It's almost surreal going outside for a walk this afternoon to see the sun shining, just how bright it is, different colours in the sky, you almost have to adjust your eyes we're so used to dark, gloomy rain soaked skies for weeks on end.

What a relief to see the blue sky! Bitterly cold in a fairly stiff breeze. I'd love if this cold dry interlude was going to last longer.

Got down to Greystones North Beach this afternoon. Substantial loss of land in a couple of weeks and another path closed off. But I did get some blue sky. Breezy and cold now.

    Dublin airport

Rain has finally stopped falling at Dublin Airport. All major roads leading to/from the airport are open. How wet was it? An incredible 51mm of rain fell at the airport in the 30 hours up to lunchtime. For context, in the whole of February last year, we’d 48mm!

It looks like the BBC just gave up and did a copy and paste for the rest of Feb forecast.
