We have to be fast approaching one of the wettest winters on record. Aside from the final week of December and 1st week of January which were largely dry, it seems it has barely stopped raining, opening 3 weeks of December were very wet and since 2nd week of January it has rained every single day and almost continuously at that, at least here in Meath and we know how extensive the flooding has been across parts of Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford. The rest of the country is now catching up to the east in terms of overall rainfall and aside from tomorrow, the rest of this month is looking very wet indeed.

The PV of Doom winter a few years back was terrible as well but this winter is definitely worse than that with the only exception of it being not as mild.

FI now takes us to the final day of winter, from tomorrow it presses on into March and all I can see between now and then is alot of rain, dartboard lows and it becoming progressively milder by the end of this month.

Do we not get a thread for the impending frost for tomorrow night? I'm on a bread run now as I type👍

I think the much of the country will need an awful lot more rain to catch up to Dublin/East.

Mace Head is at 16.8mm (LTA 89mm). Similar for Markree and Gurteen.

Dublin Airport is 63.7mm (LTA of 53mm exceeded already).

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

It doesn't seem that exceptional to me, at least in terms of Dunsany which unfortunately is the only Meath station available. December was a bit drier than average and January wasn't as bad there as it was here in Dublin.

November 2015 to January 2016 had 429.7mm at Dunsany which is its wettest 3 month period on record. Its wettest winter (2015-16) had 362.2mm. For comparison, December to February 2025-2026 up to 11th February is only on 228.0mm, 134.2mm less than winter 2015-16 ten years ago.

This is Dunsany's rainfall totals for every winter (DJF) since records began at the automated station.

Relentless rain in Offaly. 25mm now since midnight. And there was 13mm from yesterday afternoon to midnight. Not going anywhere in a hurry. Its the sun I miss. How dull its been. Since Jan 1st it must be one of the dullest spells ever.

A cool day. Persistent rain, a bit of sleet mixed in on a higher route I just drove through.

Honestly don't know what to say/do/feel/think anymore...

It has been the worst spell of wet weather I have encountered since November 2010.

In the midlands here and we haven't had it as bad as the east but it has still been horrific. Currently it is pouring down and it seems like the default is rain and drizzle and and an any kind of dry conditions (however gloomy it may be) is a treat.

As the saying goes, "there are no words", call it what you may though, horrific, dreadful, awful, dire, grim but depressing is probably the word I would use most to describe this relentless constant rain.

It's easy to forget but the first half of January was exceptionally sunny. Places had reached more than 85% of their whole January sunshine up to the 15th (though not all, in the west I think there was a fairly even distribution between both halves of the month?). That alone will have brought it up in historical rankings if you were to look at January 1st-February 12th.

Anecdotally without looking at stats, this has felt like the cloudiest spell of this duration I've seen since December 2018/January 2019. Late January to mid-February 2021 also very poor.

Heavier rain on the way for us in Meath. It looks like it's going to pivot as well curling around the east and Central counties for hours 😒

Now sign of snow on the Glenshane Pass camera at the moment, perhaps there will be some patches of white before nightfall. Elevation is slightly below 300m ASL

I can tell from the solar that December was 11% than Dec 24, January was 10% less sunny than last January, but Feb so far is 30% less sunny than last year and is for sure going to be the dullest in the last 5 years here. Thats after an exceptionally sunny year for the whole of 2025.

Lovely, can't beat some rain. Love my moist skin after being out in it.
Enjoy the lovely puddles, the muck all over the floor from people walking in. The smell of wet muck and grass in the air.
Ahh lovely weather we have in Ireland. Kill me.

I actually find that extremely hard to believe, but then again you know a lot more than I do. Living in Dublin and maybe it's just a general perception since it's been so bloody miserable, but to me it's been wet and grey for at least the last six weeks.

Almost clicked to thank this but thought better of it 😅

Sorry to hear its raining in the West now too , and good that you guys have not had the endless rain that we have had, for a change , bd !

Since my momentarily sunny trip out yesterday for a quick walk (20 mins before it started again ) we have had near constant rain pelting down here in North Dublin.

In my life I never remember such a long depressing spell of near constant rain like this.

I do remember storms and many floods, sure , but not being able to catch a break for a simple hour's excercise outdoors without getting soaked in so long is extreme .

This week alone, the government says Portugal has experienced 20% of its annual average rainfall, but the poor weather has been going on for weeks, battering the country's infrastructure.

They're getting extreme stuff further south. I really hope our governments are planning for this as models have said this is just going to get worse. If could really screw with infrastructure and food supply. In reality they'll just pretend it's not happening.

I have quoted a post of mine from 16th January showing just how sunny January was after the first half in Dublin with additionally a question at the bottom of would the month continue in a sunny vein which to answer myself, it most certainly did not. The second half had just an additional 11.4 hrs of sunshine and easterly winds did occur but very cyclonic easterlies which is a little different to the second half of December which was also worse than the first half for sunshine in the east.

Even Gonzo said himself a day later that there had been plenty of sunshine over the previous week. How times have changed.

Yeah was just a little bit mixed in at the highest point around 230m asl. Just plain rain elsewhere.

Don't tell him he is 60% water or he'll lose his mind completely 🙂

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?
