But having a perfect picture is not an indication of the quality of the signal. There are menus on equipment to find these readings. An installer will put an aerial in the location which has the best readings.

Plenty of threads on the forum about intermittent reception, but hardly ever with readings. Just "the picture is perfect" on X station most of the time, but then it starts to break up. Is there something wrong with the transmitter?

Trying look for Ireland in the setting menu on the tv and make sure you have set it to Ireland and have a another go and if it doesn't work take it back we're you got it from

It is possible there is a setting to activate teletext subtitles vs. DVB subtitles.

I have never owned a Samsung TV, I don't know the menu structure. My sister owns two Samsung models in Dublin and subtitles work ok, she and her husband are hard of hearing so subtitles are essential. We did play around with Freesat on one of the TVs but that disabled Saorview subtitles. UK channels are accessed via Freesat STBs now.

IMO you should try another country (not Ireland) in the settings, it shouldn't need a factory reset to change it and change back to Ireland afterwards.
Saorview probably set some sort of "flag" that was designed to cater for Freeview overspill compatibility conflicts but this could now be breaking subtitle functionality on Samsung TVs.
Try a few other countries eg Poland, New Zealand etc that might not have "flags" set that Saorview has.

We've 2 Samsungs here in Dublin with subtitles perfect but I think it's the Virgin Media box that farms the subtitles to the Samsungs over HDMI in that setup and they don't have to do any processing.

Yes the VM box does the processing in that case.

If you want to play around with them and the Saorview feed pickup a cheap set top aerial, signal should be ok indoors in Dublin.

The resolution of the issue is somewhere in the settings imo.

I mentioned that there is a firmware upgrade file available dated 09 February. Sorry to invoke AI again, but it is a useful shortcut. Probably no harm in updating the TV, even if the upgrade has no connection to subtitle issues.

"A Samsungupgrade.msd file is a firmware update file used to upgrade or repair the operating system and software of Samsung Smart TVs, monitors, and sometimes soundbars. When loaded onto a USB drive, this file allows the device to install the latest software, which can fix bugs, improve performance, and add new features."

What options are under Subtitle Mode?

I do think it's daft that RTE etc don't use DVB subtitles, as the text looks much cleaner than the 888-style blocky text of old!

these were subtitles tonight on RTÉ on a Samsung TV off Saorview

The style of the text displayed varies between TV manufacturers, my Walker TV's subtitle text style looks a bit more old-style teletext.

The subtitle text style on that Samsung looks pretty good

Thanks, is that using a Saorview box or just the TV and an aerial?

The STB is compatible and correctly configured, the TV is either incompatible or incorrectly configured.

You're still ploughing this "you need better signal for subtitles than pictures" furrow, you don't, not since analogue TV was killed off.

Going back to the shop today to try and replace. The shop said over the phone that they'd only do an exchange. Didn't debate that, if they have a TV that can get subtitles from a terrestrial aerial I'm ok with that. If they don't, then I will be looking for a refund.

However the shop manager said that "very few programs include subtitles now and you need a Saorview box to pick them up". Based on my limited knowledge and what people have posted here, that doesn't sound correct? The subtitles are in the signal and the Saorview box has a decoder which it uses to build a picture that it sends over HDMI to the TV.

Or in the absence of a Saorview box, the TV uses its own built in decoder to process the subtitles included in the signal that it receives. Most but not all TV programs now include subtitles in their digital signal based on my experience as a subtitle user via a Virgin Media box.

Is the shop manager trying to divest responsibility or have I misunderstood him? This seems like a classic situation of all parties trying to say its some other party's fault for the Samsung TV not displaying subtitles.

However the shop manager said that "very few programs include subtitles now

Lie. There's more than there's ever been, even some live TV.

and you need a Saorview box to pick them up".

    Lie

The TV is not fit for purpose, he should be offering a refund. Mention Small Claims Court if he doesn't cop on. I wouldn't take another TV off him, what if something goes wrong with that one will he try to fob you off again? Probably.

What shop is that? You should complain to their head office. Irish (and all other European Broadcasters and US broadcasters) are mandated to subtitle the vast majority of their content. Approved TVs in all jurisdictions are tested to make sure they show them for terrestrial signals.

Here are the subtitling rates for Ireland from CnM:

AI slop, untrue and based on issues with analogue reception.

The Samsung TV I bought is not a Saorview approved TV according to the Saorview model checker.

    https://saorview.ie/en/find-a-product/

But DID list it as Saorview Approved on their website

Where did you buy from? A UK chain store?

If it's not on the approved list it didn't go through the lab testing for saorview approval, nothing prevents manufacturers or retailers selling non-approved receivers here. It costs the manufacturer to put a receiver model through lab testing.

Did the packaging have the saorview logo?

I bought it from DID, they said it's Saorview Approved on their website and I trusted that.

I didn't know I had to check Coimisiún na Meán's approved TV list.

This part of the DID site includes it among their Saorview Ready range.

    https://www.did.ie/collections/saorview-tvs?display=list&sort=price-ascending

AI slop says this about the difference between Ready and Approved.

    • Saorview Approved: Tested for guaranteed, long-term compatibility with all Saorview services, including High Definition (HD), Mheg5 digital text, and proper channel numbering. These devices can receive over-the-air software updates to ensure they continue working when service updates occur.
    • Saorview Ready (or "Digital Ready"): Often refers to generic MPEG4-capable TVs or boxes not tested by Saorview. These may work for basic viewing but often fail to display digital text, have incorrect channel orders, or require manual retuning.

You don't have to check on the Media Commission website, only the saorview site.

Pop off an email to saorview with the model no and issue you're having. They will be able to confirm the model status regarding saorview approval

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 15,602 ✭✭✭✭josip

The spec sheet i posted above said "Saorview Approved"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 15,602 ✭✭✭✭josip

Isn't that the purpose of the Saorview link I posted above?

  • Subscribers Posts: 17,114 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

yes, if it’s not listed on saorview site it’s not approved. Mistake on DID site. Same TV is on power city site and not marked as approved there.

What did they say in shop when you went back yesterday, could they demonstrate other TVs with subtitles working?

    Any other news?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,493 ✭✭✭✭The Cush

Contacting them gets you confirmation from the horse's mouth so to speak.

There are Samsung U7000 models on that site, they may have the same chassis as your model and so may not require further approval. Hence the reason I say to contact them directly for confirmation.

The only Saorview TV in stock in that DID branch that's actually Saorview approved is a Nordmende 50" which is just a bit too big for my mothers room. 43" was already pushing the limits.

I think the safest plan is to buy a Saorview box and keep the Samsung TV i just bought. Although with that I'll lose the Samsung claimed ability to make subtitles bigger, hey ho. I'll buy the Saorview box in another shop though and will mail Coimisiun na Mean about DIDs incorrect listing of Saorview Approved for most of their TV models.

Saorview manage product approvals not Coimisiún na Meán

    Contact Saorview

    SAORVIEW Receiver Approval Process

Ireland is a member of the NorDig group; this is a group of countries and platform operators who work together to agree a common specification and standard for their reception equipment and a common operational parameter for their respective national broadcast platforms, the NorDig group consist of the countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway Sweden and Ireland.

More information on the NorDig group is available on the following link: NorDig

2rn has appointed Labwise of Finland to conduct receiver compliance testing for receivers intended for use with the Saorview platform. Receivers which pass the testing process thereby meeting the Saorview and NorDig specification are eligible to be licensed to use the “SAORVIEW” logo, this logo will in turn confirm assurance to consumers that the receiver is Saorview compliant.

Manufacturers or distributors wishing to use the Saorview logo should contact Labwise (testing@labwise .fi) to arrange testing.
