Thanks for the Dongle links, I have one ordered now. Someone above mentioned the best way of using it, should I empty/fully charge the battery before getting a reading?

I personally prefer the car to be at 50-80%, as I think this shows a more honest representation of the battery as it is. If allowed to charge and balance, the mV delta will be lower than standard. But it doesn't matter too much.

Does anyone use the nav/maps on their Leaf or is it very much redundant?

Factory Nav/Maps are redundant on pretty much every car

Waste of time on every car unless it uses live maps. I stopped using the maps on my 2014 Leaf in 2018, so a year after I bought the car in 2017. I used it as a supplementary map for charge points on a rare occasion.

Seen a lot of mentions of HX in this thread recently. I thought it was largely irrelevant on the 40/62 models? Not the case?

    Mine's at 101%, so I guess that's good?

The Hx on our former 2018 at 1349km was 109.35%. There is a direct correlation on the Hx vs SOH as the numbers were Hx=98.96% and SOH=91.15% at 3y old at 74k km before we sold the car.

Nissan changed the calculation on the 30 kWh batteries to allow for higher SOH displayed, thus managing the warranty work, but I suspect this won't be necessary with the 40 kWh modules. Our other Nissan with the original BMS firmware had a Hx=53.78% and SOH of 56.23%, but latter then jumped to 79% after the upgrade. That was when the car 92038 km and was 6.5 years old at the time. I don't think a 40 kWh would have such brutal degradation. Also I don't know what the Hx of them was when new as we bought that car second hand.

So the 40 kWh battery seems much better than the 30 kWh, but they suffer from module faults at the rear middle section if the car is DC charged a lot.

Have a look at this from my 2017 30kw. Hx is a strange parameter indeed.

That's almost identical to my 2017 30kwh leaf too. Mine drops by about .2% hx and soh .1% per month.

    Anyone use this device?

No but Leaf Spy Pro can push metrics to HA

Following the advice on here I got my new Dongle connected to Leaf Spy Pro this evening, and here's my graph. The car is just over 4 years old, Leaf L40 with 83,426km on the clock.

From what I have read online, there doesn't seem to be any worrying figures on my graph, but I am no expert. Any thoughts on it? Thanks…

Looks ok to me, but others here are more knowledgeable. SOH and Hx are similar, which is a good sign, and the cell delta is low. Look again at a low SoC to see if the delta changes much. Your 12v battery does look weak, I started to have trouble with mine at a similar resting voltage.

Bar the mileage its very similar to yours! My QC counter increments at about 2 per month despite me never using one but the L1/L2 are about right.

Looks solid to me. below 25mV delta too. Change the 12V battery.

Thanks for that. Mine is a strange one. I have a much lower mileage and fast charges and can never figure out why. I am the second owner. It's just frustrating wondering what happened.

how you know when the change the 12 v battery?

    mine says 13.04v -0.42A
    what does it mean?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,052 ✭✭✭tnegun

I dunno it's a bit of a suck it and see there's people with much lower HX on some of the FB groups that don't report issues, ours is a second car too and we don't trash it, try not to charge above 80% unless its needed and typically only charges at ~2kw/h due to other house loads running at the same time. I did a 115km return trip with 10% left to a U16 rugby match on Sunday with the front row on board, so for now it's performing well!

If it sits below 12.5v its time to take notice, below 12v is almost guaranteed to start causing trouble. My first indication the battery needed replacement was that the smart key started playing up, and it would sit around 12v. It would think it wasn't present when driving. The -0.42A I think is the load on the 12v battery if the 13.04v is the resting voltage you should be ok.

    cheers,

nearly have it 6 years without changing since new. doing alright but seen the plenty stories of version not last long at all. have the jump kit on standby but since nearly the 6 year mark perhaps its time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 361 ✭✭dubguy45

I get about 165km range (GOM). I do charge to 80-90% at 2.2kw as that is the only option as the 6kw charge option was an optional choice when buying the car new. That's disgraceful by Nissan on a top spec Tekna. There must be a lower spec model that has no charger with that logic😀.€40,000 for a new one. Not a chance, in my opinion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,502 ✭✭✭MojoMaker

Other than the new one is basically a totally different car, and fully up to spec with all market expectations for a new EV.

Is the Leaf 40 worth taking a gamble on? Bear in mind, not going to go in armed with apps, dongles, and annoying questions.

    Thanks a lot!

Is changing the 12V battery something I can do, or does it have to go into a garage? If I can do it, does any "standard" 12V car battery do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,874 ✭✭✭...Ghost...

    Very easy to DIY.

You can pop into Halfords or any motor factors for a battery. Provide make, model, year of car. You can also order online if you want. Halfords will even swap it out for a fee if you're not confident.

Thanks again, I will definitely look into doing it myself, I do like a challenge (as long as it's not too much of a challenge! 😊)

When I did mine, I read somewhere to open the bonnet and then leave the car alone for 10-15 mins so that everything shutdown properly before changing the battery, no idea if its required, but it can't do any harm.
