I can't see Farrell going before the WC regardless of what happens this 6n.

He might go before the RWC but it won't be on the back of what happens this 6Ns unless we lose all 5 games.

While the result was disappointing there's a core group of players missing through injury who would add to our performances.

I do think though our game plan or execution is flawed and if Farrell thinks Sam adds more in attack than Crowley why has he JGP kicking the leather off the ball

    100%

You won't get a head coach this side of RWC & even if you did there dwindling game time to implement new style of play, systems etc.

Outside of the above its madness to suggest he should go.

He is the best Ire head coach we've ever had imo & has proven how to get us to where we were in 22/23.

Lets get a full playing deck back first & take it from there

Our attack has been found out or nullified by the better teams, we won't beat the better teams by only scoring 14 points

We have people coming through and we have some from those teams currently playing for Ireland. One of the issues here is that we've only 4 teams, whereas the likes of France & England have double that to spread their up and coming players around to get the game time they require to develop

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,666 ✭✭✭SaoPaulo41

Conservative coaches, not blooding enough of these ex u20s to provinces or national team, or maybe they never progressed further.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,666 ✭✭✭SaoPaulo41

So what do posters think, will there be many changes fof Italy? Will we double down on tactics? Will we win?

I think we will go same tactics as Paris sadly, no big changes in players by that i mean players like Edogbo, Crowley to FB , things like that.

As for the game ,I think there is such a malaise in the team we might loose.

Whoever wins between Scots and Italy today will finish 3rd imo.

Sorry for the bleak post and I hope im proven wrong.

'The IRFU will have no choice but to make a change'????????????

Seriously? Have you thought for one second about that?

No changes unless one of his key players make it back from injury with the exception of a (pre planned) possible swap at outhalf.

We'll beat Italy and improve our PD so beating the rest will keep us in the hunt for the championship and the Triple Crown

I go back to what I said earlier....the issue so much isn't the coaching ticket in terms of focus, skill set and ability to man manage and deliver. At some point though (probably during the Schmidt era) the 15men on the pitch lost or the responsibility for the game plan was taken away from them and put on the shoulder of the head coach...the issue here is that the head coach can only do so much from the stands.

We need to be able to be dynamic, change based on what works and doesn't in the first 5mins and continue to re-evaluate and implement based on what happens, not just wait for halftime or the subs to come on. We need someone who can read a game...not just implement a plan who is on the pitch. There are probably one or two I can think of, but no one does...they need to take some responsibility to change dynamically.

After watching the first half on Thursday night we were told by Fogarty that we were going to kick longer, I doubt he decided that on his own so if it comes from the coaching team who are the players that going to change that and survive?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,666 ✭✭✭SaoPaulo41

The worrying factor is the coaching teams only tactic is " the team to show more character " 🙄

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 603 ✭✭✭thamus doku

yes I have. We are told for years the IRFU need the money from the 6 nations to exist, the higher the place the more money. This is crucial and is the reason we can never experiment.
we are told for years the 6 nations is more important to Irish Rugby than the World Cup.

logically a head coach who fails to finish top 3 in the 6 nations will be under pressure, but if he loses to wales or Italy he is definitely gone.
Finish 5th or worse and that’s when the accountants come in and when they arrive Farrells goose is cooked

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,005 ✭✭✭almostover

The IRFU have always been proponents of the sunk cost fallacy alright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,593 ✭✭✭OldRio

So after one disastrous 6 nations the IRFU sack the coach? Thank God the IRFU go about their business in a more mature manner.

But let me play devil's advocate for one moment. If your fantasy comes to fruition. One year out of a World Cup and you change the entire set up. You appoint who? The head coach of Ireland is an appointment most coaches in the World would want and who is available this side of a World Cup? Why would you limit your options? It makes no sense.

I think that shows how key Sexton was to the success of previous Farrell teams. That game plan was more player driven, which suited that team because they had a leader in Sexton who knew how to vary the approach when needed.

We are lacking that now in our team. We're devoid of real leadership up front and in the backs. I love Doris as a player and a backrow forward. But as a captain I remain very unconvinced. Ever since that nonsense in the post match interview about the acoustics of the stadium messing up Ireland's lineout I've wondered is he captain material. But then again there's no obvious alternative.

I think too there's an element of that dearth in leadership that resulted in Healy, POM, Murray and Sexton staying around as long as they did. Farrell kept selecting Earls too beyond his prime for simialr reasons. I think Farrell struggles with the game management side of coaching in the absence of natural on pitch leadership.

I’ve noticed a number of posters naming players who have retired or on decline. Long lists and none of them include two time Lion Iain Henderson. He’s a player that never got the credit he deserved from sections of the media (mostly Dublin/munster based). What Ireland wouldn’t do to get a 20 year old Iain Henderson coming through.

Ireland could use a good young 7, 9 , 10, 11, or 14 coming through much more than a lock, we're relatively ok there imo.

France New Zealand South Africa and France again have beaten us easily.
Farrell is under pressure and how the 6 nations goes will determine if he keeps his job. The IRFU will not hesitate in pulling the trigger. Lose to Italy and he is a dead man walking.
Surely Ronan OGara and mark mcall would be open to taking the job.

There isnt the private school system in Ulster either. None of the provinces can replicate Leinster. Ulster are closest in terms of the number of schools they have but all 3 have to look to clubs youth structures and work with them so much more, Munster did have AIL and players came through that bit later but so many of the players who came through were coming from the same schools they do now. Munster are putting in a lot of the structures. just need to work more with those and build on the base that they have put in place to develop more future pros.

I’d think ROG’s disciplinary record and failure to rebuild LAR in the last few seasons would go against him. He’d also need to give up his media obligations (newspaper article, OTB regular and analysis) to take the job. Would he be keen to leave La Rochelle? From the outside in he seems to have a lovely life there. Would he want to move back to the fishbowl of Ireland?

McCall has been at Sarries for a long time now and is moving up at the end of the season. Not sure he’d be looking to relocate his life at this stage of his career or indeed life. I would have thought the right moment for him would have been after JS left when his stock was at its highest.

I meant in general. I also don’t think Ireland are okay at lock. Outside of Mccarthy, the other young locks have a lot of flawed, even Mccarthy isn’t as good as Henderson or James Ryan were at similar ages.

Henderson was a freakish player as a 20 year old.

I think with Ward, Doak, Devine coming through at 7/9 we’re well set there.

back 3 is a huge issue. Ireland u20s haven’t had a quality back 3 since the year of Larmour and Nash and that was almost 10 years ago.

I was hoping Leinster might have gone after McDonald. Get him into the system and look to promote him post Farrell.

Ireland since at least the EOS era have always appointed their Head Coach from within. Maybe this time (whenever that is) they'll look outside but I don't see it happening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 603 ✭✭✭thamus doku

Whoever replaces Farrell, for me it’s only a matter of time and he won’t make the World Cup, can be Ronan Ogara as he is no worse then the South African coach.
What’s needed now is the IRFU to get serious , new head coach, bring back jones, get a former ref into the coaching ticket, get better coaches.
time also for Irish rugby to grow up, what we all knew was coming is here now, we need to start picking foreign based players. We need to clear the bottlenecks.
yes it will hurt the provinces short term but it will long term breathe life into Irish rugby.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,436 Mod ✭✭✭✭Lost Ormond

I dont get or see your completely negativity in Farrell. Matter of time? Not at all. Why do they need a former ref in the coaching ticket. There is multiple pro refs already employed by IRFU who work with the 4 provinces and Ireland all the time. Better coaches such as now. Picking foreign based players isnt a solution to anything. when we last did last on a large scale was the mid 90s at start of pro era when we were in our worst ever era of rugby and by and large we've always been last of the big 8 nations(originai 5 northern hemisphere 5 nations and the southern hemisphere tri nations)

we need the ref in the box like the South Africans do, it helps Farrell and its puts pressure on the match ref.

Drawing conclusions from the 90s on foreign based players is not helpful, doing the same things going forward Is not helpful.
if we let players go abroad we will grow the number of professional players available.
we need to start producing players not for what the provides require but just produce good rugby players ready for all markets.
Why have so many young players wasting their youth at the provinces trying to make the provincial team, why force players to move inter province when they might not want to.
