TOB’s execution was clearly awful. But his decision, imo, was influenced because Prendergast was defending inside.

It may well have been, we'll never know, but it remains 100% his error regardless. Your job is to do your job, not try and pre-emptively cover for someone else's.

iit happens somewhat regularly, its generally with backrows or centres

i dunno if it applies specifically to this situation but it does happen

Agree,we punched above our weight for years and are now taking some blows we dodged previously ,the experts on the fence always have the simple answer that they conveniently forget when it falls on its face.Anyone whoever played team sports recognizes the better the quality of opposition the more mistakes their pressure ensures you make,as last night, when your hanging on little things often don't go your way.We lack attacking quality and our set piece is fragile.

Farrell says they lacked fight but I would imagine all week the coaches majored on our recent poor disciplinary record so perhaps they overdid it to the extent we were too passive for fear of giving away penalties and cards.

A composite team of Irl/FR would be populated by mostly french players, would we get one back in?Why is it so disappointing to posters, when a superior team at home, against a severely denuded Irish team do a number on us.

These boards become an endless provincial row and in many ways that is inevitable and it's a good sign, we are all wedded to our provinces , loyal to them and love them and see the good and less of the bad when looking at the Ireland selections for our provincial players. It becomes even more obvious when we enter a period of step down rather than step up. We are clearly well off France now and I would suspect England will move well well past us this year leaving us probably scrapping with Scotland for third at best. We are well off the pace of the best 5-6 teams in the world now and that has happened quickly. We went into the 2023 WCUP with a genuine chance to win it, I think we have no chance in 2027.

I don't think anyone can honestly say we are in a good place at the moment, stallwarts like Sexton, Henshaw, Ryan, VDF, Furlong, Lowe, Conan, POM, JGP, Ringers, Aki, Beirne, Murray, Etc etc are all either gone or on the wrong side now of the age profile window.

We at some point were always likely to reach a point like this.

This won't go down well here maybe but for me the fundamental problem in Irish Rugby and it's an IRFU failing is the failure to develop decent sources of players outside of a handful of wealthy Leinster schools. Munster and Ulster's production line coming through Munster schools & clubs and Ulster schools & clubs is poor and ineffectual now and in essence what we have now is Leinster getting first dibs at the South county Dublin schools production line and then the rest go south, west or north. The IRFU has sat on this and yes mixed in a few project players from NZ etc to fill in gaps be it JGP or Lowe etc but they haven't done anything to address the problem. The problem is to prop up these provinces the IRFU has actively encouraged Leinster offcasts to move and every one who does is a blocker for any local development and it also allows the IRFU to ignore the failure of a Connacht, Munster or Ulster production line , schools and clubs. It isn't any surprise to me that as Leinster have effectively become the Irish team it risks a period of stagnation as we go through windows where not even the vaunted Leinster schools can turn out multitudes of generational players like Sexton or BOD. The structures and net has to be wider in a tiny country like Ireland. You can't focus down even further to a handful of schools in one corner on the country.

While it's great to have St.Michaels, Rock, Clongowes, Belvo and the rest it has become a crutch for the IRFU and I have little doubt that they have allowed the IRFU to sit back and let a handful of schools feed the game.

Until the IRFU recognises their failings I don't think anything will change. We need more Wallace's, O'Connell's, Bowe's and Best's as until Ireland is the best team once again of an entire island rather than half a dozen schools in Leinster we will have very fallow periods.

We will beat Italy and Wales, probably battle past Scotland and England will wipe the floor with us but what is ahead is a World Cup where we will manage decline as best we can and won't beat the best teams and hope that Rock and Michaels up their game and by 2031 the next Sexton and BOD has appeared and a few more besides.

Hard to believe a side with a Sexton, O'Connell (I'm aware they were both in the coaching box) or a POM would ever be so passive like that first half.

Two things that worried me as a collective:

It's the opening game of the Six Nations, in Paris, they should be leaving it all out there and going out to feel their lungs burn. Level of effort was unacceptable and really worrying. Farrell alluded to it. I hope he wields the axe selection-wise this week.

Constantly kicking the ball when it clearly wasn't working. TOB must have gone up for around 8 balls and did he win any? "Let's keep kicking to the most dangerous winger in world rugby, especially when our guy isn't winning ball and we've a taller winger who is better in the air on the other wing". Either brain-dead tactics from the coaches or brain-dead decision making from the players. Or a mixture of both.

Yeah, we’ve been blessed w back to back excellent teams for the last 15 years, even going back to 2007 when we were pipped by a Vincent clerc classic. Incredible run that is winding down. Even w excellent players we also had an incredible run of coaches who professionalised the set up to a degree that outdid most other test sides. Getting the better of England for a decade and going toe to toe consistently w France is not something Ireland should be expected to achieve. Rebuilding in all aspects, including management and how province’s are optimised and coordinated is overdue.

I think fight is winning the breaking ball. You don't need to be the biggest and fastest athlete to anticipate and gamble on where the ball will land, that is pure mindset. I can't recall Ireland winning 1 breaking ball.

I think a lot of posters understood what way the game will likely turn out yesterday but it offers some posters a chance to stick and twist the knife on certain players and coaches they do not like.

France went into each encounter to catch the ball

Ireland went in to 'bat it back'
Thats ok except if the french knew you were gonna do that, and sent a few runners into the bat it back channels to collect the ball where there is no offside line

    Ban billionaires

I've long been a defender of Doris but the biggest thing we were missing last night was leadership.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,023 ✭✭✭ujjjjjjjjj

James Ryan when he came on showed a level of dog and grit and didn't take a backwards step. No one is going to replace Sexton when it comes to leadership and driving standards but for me right now Ryan has to be captain and on the pitch for 80mins. Huge Doris fan BTW.

We need to forget about competing with the top dogs for the moment, the focus now has to be being better than Scotland & Argentina. Do that and while we won't win the next RWC, we'll have the QF monkey off our back at least and the next side we have that can contend for the trophy won't have the mental baggage of past failures.

We already are better, we comfortably beat Scotland in the last 6N…

Are we really at the stage where suggesting players make different defensive reads based on who is playing inside or outside them is seen as controversial?

By this logic, no 13 would ever shoot out of the line; they’d simply line up their own man, under the guise of “well, I did my job, and tackled my man. It’s not my job to pre-emptively cover for someone else i.e. make a defensive read”.

The point is, sometimes your job is to make a read to pre-emptively cover for someone else. We saw it a number of times in this game with others narrowing in around Prendergast, particularly on first phase.

Now, TOB’s execution was awful. But that’s entirely different from his decision to shoot.

And based on the quality of Prendergast’s subsequent tackle on Jalibert, you’d be hard pushed to say it was a bad decision.

France may well have scored anyway. But he has to do better there.

But - going back to the original point - can we equally say “Crowley has to do better there” for his missed tackle on Attisogbe?

We're just in between cycles. Same thing happened happened in 2008, 2012 and 2020. I honestly think this is temporary. We're just don't know our best team and we don't know our identity.

In my opinion that's what 2026 will be about, discovering all that, my concern would be whether we need a new coaching team to do that. That's not a criticism of Farrell and co, it's just the reality that to build one very good team is an enormous challenge, to do it a second time is pretty much unheard of in Irish rugby.

A totally accurate assessment of the state Irish rugby and one that I'm sure will ruffle a few feathers on here.

There just isn't the same affluence and private school system in Munster and Connacht to emulate the blueprint for Leinster's success. That private school system does exist to some extent in and around Belfast but it's not producing enough top talent at the moment.

20 years ago Munster were successful based off the produce of AIL club teams. That has diminished massively now and needs to be reinvigorated. It's the model too that should be followed in Connacht.

We're also not getting much in the way of GAA converts anymore. And it's showing in terms of catching and kicking skills. We benefited massively over the years from the likes of Shaggy, Kearney and Bowe in this regard. Multi sport athletes have a more rounded skillset.

He may be marmite but Matt Williams has an excellent article in the Times today. Nathan John's article is also on the money about Ireland and its failing kicking strategy.

Both a good read and doesn't mention the 10 issue at all!

The stats doing the rounds about the contestables are that there were 19, Ireland won 4 and Francce won 15. Damning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 319 ✭✭cantwbr1

lan Madigan on the Indo podcast went into a lot of detail about contestables. Key points are preparation for there not being a clean catch and the positioning of non/jumping support (in front, behind and breaking ball). France seemed to always have that covered whereas we didn’t seem to have any structure.

I must’ve this a listen when I get a chance. For me, Madigan is the best pundit around at the moment.

We had one game plan and it didn't work...so what did we do...continue with that game plan. There wasn't a single person on the pitch who could dynamically manage the game and make over arching team(game plan) choices in how we approached it. This only really came after half time, when we decided to keep possession and do something with it.

DuPont, not only played well but he managed his front 8 very well, kicked ball out and away when they needed the game to slow down.

I don't believe we are a team in transition in terms of team, players and a game or tournament squad. I feel we are more a team that needs leaders on the pitch who can play what's in front of them and not what was pre planned of it doesn't work.

Despite all that I am happy to see the scrums did well even though we were many a prop down. Our lineouts did well and gave us platforms. The lesser capped players stood up and put their name in the mix.

McCloskey was probably the Irish player of the game for me

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭Rayray98

It changed when Crowley came on and we had two distributors.

Normally when Ireland are at their free flowing best they have 2-3 play makers who make things happen in the fly half, Hansen and Keenan…on Thursday we only had 1 and that was Prendergast, leaving us with only 1 way of playing which was to kick the ball. It’s no coincidence that we started looking more dangerous and threatening with ball in hand once Crowley was on at 15, will be interesting to see if that continues if Keenan isn’t back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,911 ✭✭✭Rattlehead_ie

Not arguing with your point but I don't put it down to just one player changing it. There were moments where the team that started the game showed what we could do if we didn't box kick or kept it in hand (or least were 99% the box kick would work) which most of the time it didn't...this is what I mean about change of game plan.

What I will say about Crowley is and from watching Munster this year he's had his moments as a 10, but his work rate and his ability to influence a game when HE (not necessarily his team) is without the ball is the most significant thing I think he brings atm.

Farrell Is in a tough position , lose to either Italy, wales or Scotland and I think he will definitely be replaced.
if we finish outside the top 3 the IRFU will have no choice but to make a change.

He will pick as experienced as he can for all the games now, he has no choice as he will know that his job is on the line.

The reality Is Farrell brought this all on himself, giving jobs to paul O’Connell and sexton was bizarre and no way to run a serious set up. You hire the best coaches you can get, and you also need an assistant who is the bad guy and will give the players and other coaching staff plenty of guff. He can say and do things that Farrell can’t.

Farrell does not have that and he is now paying the price.

I can't see Farrell going before the WC regardless of what happens this 6n.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 27,316 ✭✭✭✭phog

He might go before the RWC but it won't be on the back of what happens this 6Ns unless we lose all 5 games.

While the result was disappointing there's a core group of players missing through injury who would add to our performances.

I do think though our game plan or execution is flawed and if Farrell thinks Sam adds more in attack than Crowley why has he JGP kicking the leather off the ball

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,794 ✭✭✭50HX

    100%

You won't get a head coach this side of RWC & even if you did there dwindling game time to implement new style of play, systems etc.

Outside of the above its madness to suggest he should go.

He is the best Ire head coach we've ever had imo & has proven how to get us to where we were in 22/23.

Lets get a full playing deck back first & take it from there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 27,316 ✭✭✭✭phog

Our attack has been found out or nullified by the better teams, we won't beat the better teams by only scoring 14 points
