If you go into any match not knowing your detail there's a good chance you'll look pretty stupid. It could be lineout calls, it could be pod formation, it could be stuff like that, and if he doesn't know it yet, then you aren't doing the team and, just as importantly, Edogbo any favours by playing him. That said I hope, and am sure, we will see him asap.

If Edogbo doesn’t know the lineout calls after two weeks in camp, then that’s an indictment on the coaching

We constantly complain about our lack of power against teams like France and South Africa. Then when he have a big, powerful lock, we don’t pick them. Irish rugby is weird.

Incredible insight into test level coaching, thank you for passing on your hard fought knowledge and experience.

The majority of those changes are driven by retirements, injuries and Aki's ban. If those players were still fit and available there is little evidence to suggest that Farrell would change things up that much.

I don't believe that because I don't know why any coach would willingly give up a test gig to go back to club rugby.

Going back to having 40 matches a season or whatever it is, every week from September to April. Travelling away every other weekend.

Farrell is busy January to March, a month in the summer and a month in November. Gets Christmas off essentially, long break in the summer post-tour, a long break after the 6N. I'm sure he's "working" during these times but it must be low stress stuff.

If I had to guess, I think there’s a good chance we’ll see him next week vs Italy.

If Edogbo had to come on after five minutes in Paris, there would be a significant concern about his ability to finish the match. He has not played 80 minutes of URC or European rugby since 2023. If he cannot do it at a lower level, could he do it in a test match against France? Maybe we could have had him in the 6-2 split ahead of Timoney but no way he could be the only lock cover.

We play Italy at home next week which should be a lot less arduous, hopefully we get a look at him then.

Potentially more money, a lot less stress, and closer to home are 3 reasons I can think of. It's likely Farrell is doing a lot of paperwork outside of the international window, watching on as provincial coaches train his team and then can't get them past a world cup quarter final

England A have named their side for the game on Friday evening in Thomond:

    England A:

15 Joe Carpenter, 14 Cadan Murley, 13 Luke Northmore, 12 Orlando Bailey, 11 Ollie Hassell-Collins, 10 Billy Searle, 9 Harry Randall, 8 Alex Dombrandt, 7 Jack Kenningham, 6 Ethan Roots (c), 5 Joe Batley, 4 Ben Bamber, 3 George Kloska, 2 Jamie Blamire, 1 Tarek Haffar

    Replacements:

16 Kepueli Tuipulotu, 17 Archie van der Flier, 18 Afolabi Fasogbon, 19 Hugh Tizard, 20 Fitz Harding, 21 Raffi Quirke, 22 Charlie Atkinson, 23 George Hendy

Some good players in there - it's always the sign of the sheer depth of English rugby, but I don't think it's a terrifying prospect by any means, and would back the Irish side to put it up to them here. They have good pace out wide in Murley & Hassell Collins (and Hendy off the bench), and a tidy pair of half backs in Searle & Randall. Good back row too with plenty of experience and senior caps in Roots & Dombrandt and I've been impressed by Kenningham any time I've seen him.

Three guys in the side with Irish links: George Kloska, Archie van der Flier and Raffi Quirke, all of which will be captured (or re-captured in Quirke's case) by playing here (Kloska actually played in the game against Ireland A in Bristol last year too).

Fwiw, this was exactly my concern with regards Cian Healy being selected over Boyle:

…the last time Healy played more than a half of rugby for Ireland was as far back as the last game of 6 Nations in 2021/22.

Following that, he played 22 times and averaged 14.5 minutes.

We were very fortunate we didn't need him earlier in games thru injury, in his last number of years, imo.

It'd be less of a concern with a 6-2 split and another lock on the bench, alright tho.

Personally don't think it's too big an issue, and expect Edogbo to get gametime vs Italy. I see him being a massive player for Ireland in the future.

My point was theres been a huge turnover and churn of players. As there always is in rugby due to injury, which has led to us having a pretty untested team by our standards. In the circumstances it might be nice to have a proven 76 cap international to come on rather than Edogbo, who will have plenty more opportunities.

Its just the latest new shiny thing cause celebre on here like Tiernan o Halloran is better than Rob Kearney, Harry Byrne is Romain Ntmack, Coombes etc etc

Not sure where the notion that Ireland doesn’t have a big powerful lock?

for the last 14 seasons we have had Henderson and/or McCarthy, who are as powerful as anyone. The Irish tight 5 has been outstanding in that time frame.

Complete aside that I haven't seen mentioned on here, but pretty cool for both Cian and Sam to be starting together on Thursday.

Its pretty simple put Crowley in a better team and you get a better Crowley!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,292 ✭✭✭TRC10

If our tight 5 is so awesome, how come our scrum gets demolished so often? And how come we hear so much discourse about Ireland lacking powerful locks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,316 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Anyone any idea when the A team is announced? Tomorrow?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭Rayray98

It doesn’t though, in the last 6N the Irish scrum definitely held its own.

Ireland had plenty of issues but the scrum was not one of them.

As was stated earlier Irelands pack is bigger than the French pack on Thursday and you won’t find many more powerful locks than Joe McCarthy so I don’t see how power could be labelled an excuse on Thursday, if we get breasted our issues lie elsewhere.

Hopefully our lineout issues will be rectified this six nations, if not I think POC would be under immense pressure as its our achielles heel for the last 2 years

POC and Beirne.. Beirnes calling has been woeful

I'm on about Jegou, Auradou and Nouchi. Three 22 year old forwards in their match day 23. We wouldn't bench our 23 year old for Thursday.

Yes, it can't possibly have anything to do with the - checks notes - 7 other guys involved….

You do realize yeah that nouchi at 22 has almost 3000 more professional minutes than edogbo does, even with Edwin a year older? Have you any actual knowledge of what you are trying to argue??

So I'll say it again, comparison with the selection choices of Ireland and France is utter stupidity.

Ireland DOES NOT HAVE the same selection choices that France does, so it's utterly pointless in comparing both.

You and other posters also don't seem to understand why the homework for a second row would be more than most other positions, especially considering the line out, so it's really not at all confusing or strange to accept why edogbo might not be ready for this game tomorrow night
