Beautiful day in Dublin. I don't want to say the S word. But it's definitely S like.

Yep, nicest afternoon in a long time in Dublin, I know we had similar weather over Christmas but the sun is so low in that period that even sunny days are still quite dull, the increased brightness is really noticeable today after weeks and weeks of incessant gloom

Today is the first day of spring after all 😉

Glorious day here in Longford, as was yesterday, though it seems to have lashed overnight.

Gorgeous sunshine in North Kildare today, but feels chilly. But so nice to see something apart from the dreary grey. Not enough to dry out even the hard surfaces, let alone the grass, though, since it rained fairly heavy up to 11am. I hope the upcoming rain is more showery and less persistent than what we've had the past few weeks.

I received a MapAlerter email today with "Moderate Weather Advisory (Risk of Flooding) for Kildare." But there isn't even a Yellow warning? Weird because the last weather related alert I received was for Storm Eowyn, so it's not like they routinely send out these advisories.

Took a spin to Clonmacnoise today. Nice bit of sun but a thin breeze.

Note ACS in lower left of pic.

Totally agree…turned into a lovely Spring like day. Lovely to see so many daffodils blooming as well as the birds in full song. I do love this time of the year however it can often have a sting in it's tail

With the evenings beginning to get a bit longer, I understand why some people's thoughts turn to spring around now. Especially as most of us were taught in school that February is a spring month.

But from a meteorological point of view, February is very much a winter month. It's when the sea is near its coldest, and in some areas of the country it's statistically the coldest month of the year (though in recent years it's been January).

Indeed, I remember many a winter when the first few days of March were the coldest.

So I do fear that people talking about "spring-like" conditions and today being the start of spring etc are just setting themselves up for disappointment. As we're still very much in winter and there's likely to be a few more weeks of cold weather to come. And who knows, we may still yet see some more snow…

Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the sea (Irish Sea at least) coldest in March and April?

The final week in February and the first week in March is probably the coldest. By late March and April things would have "warmed" up a tad.

Yeah “warmed” is right. Previous swims during good weather spells in Spring made me feel like I was in an ice bath the sea was that cold.

0c. I think it’ll be a colder night than the M.E text forecast mentions with a low of -1c. I wouldn’t be surprised to see some areas drop to -3/-4c.

I see there's 0% rainfall predicted for Malin Head for the week on Met Eireann's forecast.

Great day along Tralee Bay and even cut the grass here near Tralee. Enjoyed the sense of emerging out of the winter and the darkest days are behind us but of course knowing all too well we are not out of the woods yet. But certainly put us in good mood. Got up to 11C in all day sunshine and currently a cool 2.2C ( down to 1.4C a short time ago ).

Great drying in a light breeze with the sunshine and lower humidity today, the Cormorant was making good use of the sunshine too .

I'd say today was my second favourite weather day ever, maybe even joint first, the perfect start to February. The Baltic Sea snow machine hasn't let up here in Stockholm since 7 pm yesterday. The snow was light to moderate most of the time but there were some heavy to very heavy bursts. Some of the time, it seemed clear overhead yet it was still somehow snowing. The snow was very feathery and it was flat calm away from bodies of water, so the snow fell very gracefully. The high temperature was -5 °C and it should get to -9 °C, which is impressive considering the cloud cover and onshore flow. The conditions were very enjoyable for skiing and plenty of people were out happy having a great time. I spotted a massive snow pile inside a stadium while out on a walk. The number of images in this post is actually me trying to limit myself!

    Moon of Thorns_2015380.jpg

Last night was the scary Moon of Thorns

A bit later and it was lovely, still and cloud free, but then a few hours later the wind was howling.

    Lit by moonlight:

    And here she is:

The thing about whether it's spring or winter is determined strongly by a phenomenon called the hysteresis effect, where basically the response of a system lags the inputs that stimulate the response. In seasonal terms, it means that the weather lags the shortest and longest days by a good bit so the cold weather peak of winter might be upon us.

Since the birds don't cause the weather, I'm ignoring them.

Apologies I got no notification for this post. That's not how I interpret that graph. The 10th percentile line shows a level that is lower than 90% of historical water level reading for that time of year. So only 10% of recorded levels were below that line in January for Scarawalsh. So if the water level is below the 10th percentile on a given date, it means the river was unusually low compared to past years in January. This checks out in reality because many rivers around here were below the 10th percentile at the end of the first week in January because of over 2 weeks of no rain. In fact they were even at levels that you would expect in summer.

Hard frost here this morning at 7am. Frost will significantly reduce runoff from mountains which could help the Slaney which is mainly fed from Wicklow mountains.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

All these pictures make me homesick.

    I'm in Finland since 2010s
