he was also a number 8 the whole way through his career until he went into the 7’s programme.

he scored some fantastic tries for Ballynahinch.

Murray Kinsella saying there is a fascinating team selection to come, i wonder is it Billy Bohan or maybe Crowley and Prendergast both in the team to start

Whatever it is, we go into the game serious underdogs. All i want to see is a coherent plan

disallowed Edinburgh try from the cross filed kick which #3 “overran” and obstructed was a pure gift to Leinster. If anything he was being tackled off the ball by Degan.

This competition is funny. If somehow we get this first win we will be hands down the favourites for the tournament. Lose as expected and they have an obituary for the team in the paper. Of course neither is true, it's just one game.

i do like Crowley at 12, think it suits him better

Let’s take a simpler line of work, the Olympic 100m. Apparently, in the past ten competitions the average age of champions was 24 and Usain Bolt set his record at 22. Obviously, speed is just one requirement of a winger but it does tend to peak fairly early in adult life.

wouldn’t be surprised if Farrell went for an unexpected team. Given the injury issues he is in an unusual position of having nothing to lose and everything to gain. He gets to try out some new players/combinations in a match where France are also rebuilding to some extent. Expectations are as low as they’ve been for many years and the only risk is a severe beating. He won’t have a better chance to experiment on a top flight game and he has the possibility of locking in some momentum. Seeing that young Leinster team dig it out today is a good example of what’s possible.

That disallowed try by Tector was exciting. It’s great to see an out-half do that.

I think there is almost zero chance Crowley starts at 15 (or Prendergast)

could be Osbourne at 15 & Stockdale on the wing.

There's a decent chance that Bryne, Prendergast and Crowley will all be in the matchday 23 though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 307 ✭✭big-al

Not a hope. Flyhalf is the weakest position in the Irish squad.

There is no way the 3 of them will be in the 23. People need to get real here.

Could see a world where 10 is Prendergast 22 is Byrne and 23 is Crowley in a 5/3 split. Would be left field alright but not quite “not a hope”.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭Rayray98

If Crowley starts at 15 with Prendergast at 10 the likihood is it’s a 6/2 split with a SH in the 22 shirt (Casey) and an outside back in the 23 shirt (Osborne)

Edogbo and Joe at lock maybe?

Beirne at 6, Ryan on the bench

    Sam/Harry at 10

    Crowley at 15

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 307 ✭✭big-al

Yeah there is ZERO chance of that happening.

These outhalves aren’t as good as you think they are.

the 23 will be one of Stockdale/osbohrne/baloucoune/lowe.

Reading between the lines the fascinating selection could be

    1. 4 SR’s in the XV, with McCarthy, Ryan and Beirne starting the piece seems to indicate Edogbo could also play in the starting pack. If Farrell wants another big guy in the pack it’ll likely be C.Prendergast, played all 3 tests during the autumn and has played a lot at 7 recently for Connacht. Fits the bill of an extra SR being 6’5 & 112kg and has actually played 7 before so not out of place entirely.

    2. Crowley at 15, I wonder did Murray let it slip that this might be the fascinating selection? Not just the talk of Crowley starting 15 but the fact when it came to the 10 jersey he wasn’t even mentioned as part of the debeate, did he accidentally let slip what might be happening.

    Overall it seems it’ll be

    1 Milne/Loughman/O’Toole

    2 Sheehan

    3 Furlong (if fit)

4,5,6,7 = will be Ryan,McCarthy, Beirne & 1 of Prendergast, Edogbo or VDF depending on how he wants Ireland to play, with the numbers in jersey not determined yet!

    8 Doris

    9 JGP

    10 Prendergast

    11 James Lowe

    12 Stuart McCloskey

    13 Garry Ringrose

    14 Tommy O’Brien

    15 Jack Crowley/Jamie Osborne

Don't or can't see the benifit of all 3 10's in matchday 23.

2 of them can only play 10.

Crowley at a push to cover 12 during the game.

10 won't be our issue on Thursday night i feel

”Will be” is too strong given we could just as easily go 6-2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 307 ✭✭big-al

    you know what I mean.

if yer man Kinsella knows anything then the surprise could be Edogbo (or on the bench)starting or Bohan starting.

it won’t be putting 3 average out half’s in the 23.

I think you probably have to start Ryan +1, just for lineout here.

I reckon it’ll be Ryan and McCarthy, with Beirne at 6 and Edogbo on the bench.

We got stung vs SA with no 2nd row on the bench, and ostensibly Baird covering lock, but I don’t see Farrell making that mistake again vs heavyweight packs.

We get it, you don’t rate the 10s, you don’t have to keep repeating it every post.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,759 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

I’m just making the point that “ZERO chance” and “will be” are far too assured.

FWIW, I think there’s an outside chance Crowley starts at 15 here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,223 ✭✭✭TRC10

Surely Frawley at 15 makes a whole lot more sense than Crowley. He’s played there for Ireland before and he’s actually been playing there regularly this season, whereas Crowley hasn’t started a game at 15 since October 2022 (his only ever start at 15).

I genuinely think there’s a good chance Tom O’Toole starts at loosehead. Ireland tried to convert him to LH about a year ago. They played him there against Fiji in 2024 and against England A last year. It didn’t work because Ulster had no intention of playing him there. But he probably offers more around the field than any of the specialist LHs and we know Ireland don’t prioritise the set piece, so I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they just start him at LH.

If Osborne is fit I’d say he’ll almost certainly be 15. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Crowley or Prendergast at 22 and Frawley 23.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 326 ✭✭Rayray98

Worth noting Crowley came off the bench twice in the last 6N at 15. Worth noting we don’t see what’s happening at training, Crowley is doing what the coaches want better than Frawley than there is every chance they’ll back him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,024 ✭✭✭Paddy_Mag

    Could the back row be

    6. Beirne

    7 Doris

    8 Conan

    ????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,223 ✭✭✭TRC10

VDF is one of the few players who has actually been in pretty good form. And he’s one player who might help us punch over the gain line. I wouldn’t be starting Conan over him. If there’s one player who might be at risk of being left out for Conan, it’s Tadhg Beirne.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭johnh6767

Tadhg Beirne is not being left out of bet the ranch on that one he’s arguably our best forward given autumn internationals

Would not write that off at all, but it certainly would tick the box of “fascinating”.

If you go with that selection you lose the impact of a N8 off the bench that Farrell tends to like. I suspect it’ll be Doris & Beirne for sure at 6/8 and then either VDF or someone left field at 7.
