After the FF Presidential election debacle, how long before Micheal Martin resigns or is pushed?

And a rose of Tralee winner whose campaign highlight was "remember tamagotchis?"

I always thought that FF supporters prior to 2011 never saw Martin as a future leader of the party, what was his nickname Minister for reports or something like that, he only became a figure of a leader after the 2011 election when a lot of supposed leading lights in FF had walked away after driving the country of a cliff, Martin should have gone then. As you say Martin is not a decision maker he would rather dance around an issue rather than make a decision in case it might be wrong. To me a leader is someone that the people look up to, I am not too sure there are many people that look up to Martin as a leader or to Harris. We are really bereft of a strong leadership in this country, someone that can give a vision of the country to the people and lead the people. We definitely do not have that in any of the party leaders are this time.

Is this the worst that FF have ever polled?

Very clear it was a mistake not to jettison Martin when they had the chance last year.

They bottomed out at 12% - in one outlier of a poll - in 2011; so the period on 10/11% in 2020 is their worst.

Whenever MM goes, it's hard to see anyone other than Jim O'Callaghan replacing him, unless he seriously blots his copybook in some way…

Michael martin is in fact a fantastic leader in my eyes and reminds me a lot of the nurses and doctors I know.

He acts as a servant when in fact he he is the leader. That is the highest accolade you can give a leader, not a delegator or dominant task master, a servant is the highest good.

What's prompting this? Trying to reassure voters?

A lot of people don't belive he means it maaaan. If he actually does then presumably he feels if he keeps repeating it over time people will start to believe him…

I thought Michael Martins performance in the White House yesterday afternoon was much more measured, than last year, when he looked, ghost-like and frightened. For all his flaws, Martin has always carried himself like someone shaped by the same service‑ethic that defines the nurses and doctors I grew up close to, and public representatives of our society. People who put duty before ego. Yesterday Michael was much more present, reactive and willing to cut in on Trump. He butted into the conversation, even when he didn’t have a chance to, so as not to appear offensively timid to Trump, but to also show he was alert to the conversation and ongoing situations, and able to stand his ground. And that is the key with Trump always – standing ones ground and pushing back whenever possible. He admires strength and dislikes submission. But besides from stylistic excellence, he was also adept in terms of substance.

The thing, that I never really trust or agree with, in a Fianna Fail supporter or rep., is them talking about the international rules based order and international law, because their roots reach back to, and some their parties members, arguably, committed, war crimes. But also because they opposed England so vehemently over the years in WW1 and WW2, NATO etc. Their own political history was built on pushing back against British power, not defending Western structures. I’m not saying their current position is fake, but it does feel like something they say, because it suits the current environment. Despite all that Martin has always stayed true to his role as politician and public servant, courteous, understated and professional. 

On the most important issue, Iran, the Taoiseach spoke in terms I never thought I would hear a Fianna Fail Taoiseach use – I paraphrase - !the enslaved people or Iran needed to be freed” – “you did your bit to help out there” – things like “oppression” and “oppressive regime” – things  I never thought I would hear a FF Taoiseach use. I feel as if Martin has taken a strategically moral stance in terms of international law, while he doesn’t really believe in what his party is standing for, to completely bullsh1t and fill Trump with rubbish and lies as to his beliefs, but also to hoover up the centre right floating voters. I have said it on here before, and will say it again, I don’t believe for one minute Michael Martin believes what he is saying, but is saying it, possibly to protect our country historically, and even prevent us being isolated by western military powers. Although he and they FF don’t believe in it, they are taking the position to not strike out in a contrarian move against the western powers and make moves to intimate towards reuniting our country, or disown the West amidst a global war 

My thoughts on this are that although it is understandable that FF have taken the side of international law and interventionism, the rules-based order and UN and the international institutions which they stand on, are not necessarily at threat, despite Trumps gusto and wind towards them. The existence of such structures, including NATO, are in tact and not going anywhere. Even the Taoiseachs reference to Irelands longest standing tradition in the world of peace keeping nations, that is not under threat by a new system, even though international law and those institutions are being undermined, sidelined and not used or respected in terms of the rules and laws they supposedly keep. So one has to ask, why in God's name is he and FF taking this stance all of a sudden, I hope it's not to salvage the support of lost persons of Ireland like the exiled Irish or something like that. I can't think of a logical reason if they don't believe it.

On Ukraine, Martin again went on the attack, in condemning Russia, a position we have heard over and over from FF, while although I don’t for one second believe it, in terms of FF strongly respecting Russia and the history of Socialism and Marxism, and having a strong affiliation with the oppression of said regimes and the damage they have inflicted in the past, not in terms of deaths or economic collapse, but in terms of the absolutist influence and persuasion they had almost completely over the populace as the Irish Republican movement has in our country, rightly. But in terms of taking the civilized stance and condemning the war in Ukraine, and any military advancement or land grabs, it is absolutely, undoubtedly, the right position for Ireland to take and there is no other reasonable positions to take. Having said that, I think there lies sympathies of communism in this country in certain republican and historian factions. 

Finally, Trump openly brought up Churchill in an openly confrontational manner, to which Martin very clearly and strongly pushed back saying our country had and has certain problems with him historically etc. However, he did not go so far, as many on this site of a FF background and in this country go, of condemning the result of WW2, making light of singing Deatschland Uber Alles and attempting to humiliate England rightly, by showing disrespect for the result of WW2 etc. Martin took the clear stance of we oppose certain elements but not the result, which was all he could be expected to do, not be disrespectful about WW2 and world history However, his true nature always seems to shine through even if his movements are calculated. There’s a humility in him that reminds me of the public servants that I have witnessed for decades — people who serve first, and understand that leadership is a form of emotional intelligence and taking  care of people.
