It wouldn't matter, you still need to be out of contract. You would just schedule the switchover to be after the contract end date to be sure.

Pure staff work from their bedroom. I'm with them and have those two boxes on my wall. Pure and Vodafone have supplied me from them.

They might be using a different access network as there might be more than one available to you. That would involve a new fibre install. That looks to be OpenEir, have they said which they are using? (OpenEir, SIRO, NBI etc.)

You can check which are available to you here -

Omg another installation?! Would that mean another cable being run into the house?

I was with Digiweb before and this is what shows up when I checked my eircode

    3435.jpg

Just want a provider that will work with whats already here as my landlord won't allow more cables being run tbh so idk what to do if Pure cant work with this?!

Thanks btw I haven't a clue about any of this stuff

Yeah I'd say most likely they've chosen a different access network and a new fibre cable will be needed for that, if that's the only connection you have currently.

Digiweb will let you pick which access network you want to use at different prices for each but most other providers won't let you choose and choose themselves.

I'd ring Pure Telecom and say you want to continue using your existing OpenEir connection and see what they say.

thanks I'll ring them now and see if I get anywhere and if they'll use OpenEir.

I dont suppose theres any way to know for sure that I do actually have OpenEir from the Digiweb install?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,442 ✭✭✭NotShero

I'm almost certain it's OpenEir, only SIRO and OpenEir use Huawei ONTs and SIRO doesn't separate the ONT and NTU afaik.

There should be a CRN/UAN on the Digiweb bill for a switchover on the same access network that you should give to Pure Telecom for a seamless switch. It's quite hidden in the grey box at the end of the first page of the bill. It should be a CRN/UAN for OpenEir, SIRO Acc No or NBI Line ID.

Thanks so much I've found the CRN UAN on an old bill.

Tbh I think I'll just go back to Digiweb at this stage. It's 55 euro more expensive than Pure but Pure's break fee is €150 vs Digiweb's €50 or €100 so I'll save that there and with referrals

I rang Eir and they said I can switch from the day after the date of the end of contract. For me my contract ends on the 4th so I am switching over on the 5th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,442 ✭✭✭NotShero

You could go with Eir who will use OpenEir most likely but their early cease charges are very high. Blacknight may also let you choose OpenEir and they do 6 month contracts also.

Most providers will let you move the contract to the new address if they can provide service there.

Make sure to give back the router to eir as if not you'll be charged a €60 non return fee! Also, ignore any emails about having to box it up/stick a label on the front. Just bring it into your local shop and they'll give you an email receipt. Ye have 30 days once your service is terminated to return it

    Hi all,

I’ve been with Virgin Media (and UPC before them) for about 20 years, but I’m now reviewing my bill and considering switching. I’m currently paying €88.50/month for a 500Mb broadband

What stings is that new customers can get 500Mb for €35, 1Gb for €45, or 2Gb for €55, while after 20 years I’m paying €89 it genuinely feels like loyalty doesn’t pay.

The main reason I stayed so long was that switching felt like a hassle, especially with everything in the house tied to Wi-Fi. From reading other threads, I now realise it’s much simpler than I thought, set the new router with the same network name and password and most devices reconnect automatically.

I’ve got a lot of smart home / IoT devices so I need strong, stable Wi-Fi, and I want the router supplied by the ISP rather than buying my own.

Virgin have now offered me this retention deal:

    • 2Gb broadband for €80/month for 6 months
    • Then €90/month after that
    • Includes a new router

I’m genuinely confused, on one hand it’s a massive speed jump, but on the other I’d be paying more than I am now after 6 months.

    • If I switch, which Irish provider offers the best package with a solid ISP-supplied router?

Thanks in advance, I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who’s made the switch.

Apply online as a "new" customer, just use a different email you can keep your original bank details, 500meg for €35 for 2 years, nothing wrong with that😉. I'd go for it myself except I'm in contact with Pure until April.

genuinely feels like loyalty doesn’t pay

Its not a feeling. Its a fact unfortunately.

If everything is working as it is on a 500mbs plan, what benefit are you getting with a speed bump?

Do as @CoBo55 suggested above or else switch and save.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 137 ✭✭Quay_Koncept

This is so simple, it almost seems like its nuts, in a million years this would not have dawned on me……….. hmmmmm I am thinking they obviously have my address. So do people actually do that? I guess if they question it i can say my wife is taking over the bill!?!?!? Can it really be that straight forward :O lol thanks that suggestion just blew my mind! Thank you!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 137 ✭✭Quay_Koncept

For me it’s not really about the raw speed bump. What caught my eye is that the higher-tier plans come with a newer, more “modern” router. I was hoping that would effectively replace my Netgear Nighthawk R8000, which is fairly old tech at this point and is rated for around 32 concurrent devices.

My thinking is that a newer Wi-Fi 6 router, bundled with the faster plans, might cope better with a house full of IoT devices. In other words, I’m less interested in whether I need 1Gb+ speeds and more interested in whether the newer hardware is genuinely better at handling lots of simultaneous connections.

As you are have some tech-sense, if that is your primary concern then you would be far better served by investing in your own router/networking equipment. It will future proof your network and allow you to always hunt out the best value broadband plan for yourself should you ever want to change.

Otherwise you are going to be faced with a challenging price vs hardware issue when choosing a new supplier.

If you do consider going down this route, checkout the website Dong Knows Tech - this is probably one of the best networking advice websites around with unbiased advice. Its a treasure trove of info for any tech enthusiast. His direct responses to comments is a great read.

You are definately clued in to keeping Wifi 6/6E and not going for Wifi 7. Ive managed to talk a few people out of upgrading to Wifi 7 simoply because the only device they owned capable of using it was their mobile. Everything else in their network was wifi 6 or 5 and typically they only had a 500mbs connection.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,630 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

I did it twice when I was with them. I went with their 1gig service thinking the newer black WiFi 6 router would be the cheese, it wasn't.... The old white router was better and 500 meg is perfectly fine, the old 360 was perfectly fine as was the original 240, there's a lot of bull about speeds. Only ring them to cancel the existing service, stand your ground and refuse all offers as the €35 for 2 years is brilliant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,236 ✭✭✭wassie

Makes you wonder if we may see a few more 24 month offers with no price rise as Telcos try and lock people in for 2 years before the incoming in-contract price increase (ICPI) laws come into effect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 137 ✭✭Quay_Koncept

Sound, thanks for that, I was going to email them to cancel just in case they asked me what new provider i was going with 😆 so ill need to order straight away after cancelling! did you have much of a gap between cancelling and the new contract,

I waited until there was about 5 days left on the outgoing contract and then signed up as a new customer online, being on the co-ax system I received the new modem the next day, when you connect it to the system that's deemed to be the start of your new contract. The price freeze offer ends on the 18th of February make sure to be up and running before then.

anyone leave sky. Do you need to include the cables when you are sending it back? Have a Siro box and have no idea how to open it to even get that cable out🙈

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 137 ✭✭Quay_Koncept

After 30 minutes on hold I finally got through and was ready to cancel. The agent immediately and offered me €55/month for 500gb, a new router, and migration from coax to their black fibreoptic cable.

She also mentioned the 30-day notice period and that service wouldn’t end until the end of February so this might torpedo the 35 a month offer as you say it ends of the 18th. By the way where did you see the Feb 18th date? On their website it actually says it ends in 2 days!

€55 a month for 500gb is €20 too high based on what's available elsewhere.

It might be easier to switch. You should be able to switch to Vodafone and Sky with Virgin FTTP available. You can also check if there are other access networks available to you here (OpenEir, SIRO, NBI etc.) -

    https://www.comreg.ie/broadbandchecker/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,630 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Way to expensive I hope you cancelled. The Ad on TV says it's ending on the 18th. You cancel today, the service terminates in 30 days time. Before the 18th you order the new service and when the new modem arrives connect it up making sure everything works and the new contract starts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,442 ✭✭✭NotShero

With FTTP now available for the OP, an engineer would be needed for the new installation. They don't renew or make new coax contracts if FTTP is available afaik.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 137 ✭✭Quay_Koncept

Yeah im going to cancel now and reorder tommorow, i dont mind paying to get the engineer to fibreoptic cable pulled inside, its in the box outside beside the co-ax cable, as the saving will more than make up for it.

Signed up with Pure only a couple of months ago and got a price increase notice this morning, comes to over 10% increase as just have Broadband/Home Phone, seems excessive.

"From the 1st of March your monthly package with Pure Telecom will rise by €5.50 per month."

Looks like I will be switching again.
