I'd nearly trust all you lads here on the weather forum more than I'd trust Met Eireann..

Guess what, if they didn't mention thunderstorms in their forecast and they did happen, you would still be saying they are hopeless

Caught that thunder here a while ago. That shower cave crib nowhere. I was out weather and a few showers booked up but it seems they really got going after 2:30 onwards. The shower that delivered thunder is streaming in off the sea and running inland now. It really did start as a small shower on my walk but I could see it over Lahinch interdicting but really wasn’t expecting lightening and torrential rain in time!

Can see Cb from Greystones, between the showers, related to those strikes.

Was looking out at a hailstone downpour and then saw fork lightning hit behind a forest just now followed by very loud thunder, another belt shortly after but seems to have just passed through. Wasn't expecting that. SE Tipp

Radar has the look of severe storm activity now to 0900h across parts of central Ireland from Galway east. Will be placing this in today's forecast message but that won't be fully prepared for several more minutes.

Well it turned out a damp squib. A shower trough with a flash or 2 of lighting over Galway

Heavy squally thundery shower near Ardagh, County Longford. Two strikes, one just over a kilometre away, immediately north of Ardagh. The other about two kilometres to my west.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,702 ✭✭✭highdef

The thundery shower developed into a thunderstorm, nearly twenty strikes.

Fair bit of lightning activity so far today around the country, sunny spells and big showers with a trace of hail here near the Kerry coast and could see CB's in the distance.

This is from months ago but recently came across it on Reddit.

Possible superbolt west of ireland today (1142 kA) image.png

    Superbolt lightning(never heard of it)

“Some of these superbolts can have up to a 1,000 times more energy than typical lightning,” Ripoll said. Such bolts are capable of producing more damage than typical lightning if they were to strike the right spot on Earth.

    NASA article on superbolts

    https://science.nasa.gov/earth/earth-observatory/superbolts-carry-super-power-148933/

    Imagine the thunder with that.
