Lost power for 15 mins in west Galway after big lightning strike. Heavy hailstones too.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Why no thunderstorm warning for Galway? It’s nasty out there. Big rumble a minute ago followed by strong winds with the squall.

I think I saw 2 big flashes north of Cork city but we have clear sky here, didn't hear any thunder.

Had a very close experience this morning in Southwest Mayo, it was in 2 phases, blinding flash, darkness for fraction of a second then another slightly longer illumination, the second one was more like a floodlight for half a second. Thunder about 1 second after. People in community reporting loss of power in a few places.

Could hear a few rumbles early morning Oscar on the coast near Tralee but the dark cloud that moved in after 08.00 was amazing , whatever light was there on the way to work was gone by 08.30, got so dark almost like the middle of the night and very heavy rain, a few flashes also. 9.2mm fell , mostly from this morning.

Big convective showers streaming in towards the Western coasts this evening. Not as much deep layer shear as last night /early morning but good lapse rates all the same, not huge CAPE but a bit of potential, a few strikes showing up off the coasts, will see if a few make it towards the coasts or a small bit inland later this evening and overnight. Uppers very cold so again hail possible. Windy along the coast here tonight.

Is that a squall line running from Kerry to Galway

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 13,300 Mod ✭✭✭✭Meteorite58

Well not technically a squall line but probably the leading part of the occluded front with an organized band of showers in it , I probably had an embedded convective shower pass over me producing gusty winds in the downdraught with the falling hail. Actually shows up quite well on the Satellite gif.

So I’m in the Costa del Sol and it’s going off right now. Thunder and lightening and I just got a weather warning on my phone. 🙈

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,365 ✭✭✭CruelSummer

that red warning was definitely correct. The rain that has fallen in the last 3 hours was biblical.
