Very close to my thinking… Number one priority this weekend is getting a first choice 13. I don't see Hawshaw as that, sorry the Leinster game has left mental scars…

I am trying to create a back up for each position and having Naughton coving both 10 and 15 is a big winner for us…

Harry can then cover 13, 15 and winger on a squeeze.

Sorry to call it out but Bundi seems to be struggling at the moment… He doesn't seem his old self… It isn't old age, you don't go from almost being 3 test Lion to struggling at your club in a few months… Something seems off…

I thought this was a very interesting exercise, so I ran similar numbers across the four provinces.

Over the past 2 and half seasons Connacht have given the most minutes to young players (by your definition, 23 or younger on 1st September of the relevant season).

Connacht have given 27.2% of all available minutes over that period to players who fit that description (my numbers match yours for the years in question, but 25/26 is now 18% following the latest round of games).

    Ulster are in second, on 26.5% of all minutes over the past three seasons (25/26 - 21%, 2024/25 - 31%, 2023/24 - 25%).

    Leinster third on 21.8% - they're highest this season on 25%, 2024/25 - 16% and 2023/24 - 26%.

Munster a distant fourth on 14.5%. Lowest (by a distance) this season on just 10%, 12% in 2024/25 and 20% in 2023/24. Munster also have the lowest allocation of minutes to young players in each year assessed.

    2025/26

    2024/25

    2023/24

    Leinster

    25%

    16%

    26%

    Munster

    10%

    12%

    20%

    Connacht

    18%

    22%

    37%

    Ulster

    21%

    31%

    25%

Yeah it's a bit of a tough one, first choice for Leinster means I'm minding Forde and Gilbert and playing Naughton back in as Bench cover for 15/10 with the idea that he moves for the last 15/20 when Carty goes off

I totally agree re Buckley and DTM, it's a good point.

Klyne to Gloucester leaves Munster also in the market for a big lock with a similar set of criteria as us, unless they think they can cover from within.

Hearing some rumours of Will Connors signing for Connacht

You seem to miss the point altogether. We have to see our next generation players playing against Leinster and see if they are good enough. To go out against Leinster with a team we know will lose achieves nothing. It's not that Leinster is there for the taking

This year is development year. Lancaster is doing good. I hope he continues rather than revert

Give the two young lads a shot together at 9 and 10. If they do that I don't mind who they put everywhere. If those two perform together we have a great long term future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 864 ✭✭✭ShineyShiney

I got your point, I just don't agree with you. I find your view point simplisti and a definite way to kill the potential of young players. I like playing young players but I could go to see them in the A matches. I want to see the ones near ready play with settled teams to see their value.

Lancaster has a history of selecting youth strategically not as a block and I see no reason to change.

My priority for development would be 13 because it's our biggest area of the weakness.

Bundi can't play there anymore, Forde is a great 12 but an average 13, Ralston is injured, Hawkshaw is a good 12 also but isn't the answer at 13 and Gavin has a bit to go and is also injured.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,806 ✭✭✭ElisaAtWar

And yet you select Bundee for both games. Honestly. Or was it Bundi ?

Looks like this Bath prop rumour might have legs. I like the idea of an experienced older head. Hope he is pretty powerful. We need him to be damn good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,312 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

Connacht set to sign South African loosehead prop Francois van Wyk from Bath. 34 years old so not one for the future but a big unit who can do a job for a couple years. While some of the younger props gain some experience.

Looking at the stats he comes off the bench for the last 20+ minutes in pretty much every game for Bath this season.

Munster have done some puzzling stuff like signing Hanrahan off us and giving him meaningful minutes that would probably have been better served trying out one of their academy out halves.

Murray Kinsella reporting that Will Connors will join Connacht from next season

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 747 ✭✭✭CuriousCucumber

That's two good signings from Leinster. The types of moves that we need

We're still very light in the pack.

Should be more competitive next season at least

Fantastic player when fit, but 70 senior appearances at 29 years of age reflects how bad his injury profile is.

He’s a fine player Conners. Few injuries and concussions sadly. I wonder if Jansen might be off to make the cash available in the back row?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,312 ✭✭✭✭Utopia Parkway

Would prefer to keep Jansen to be honest. He’s nearly always available. Connors is a fine player but hard to see him suddenly being fit more in Connacht than he has been in Leinster the past couple years.

Just checked there and Jansen is contracted until the end of the 26/27 season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,423 ✭✭✭testtech05

Id be surprised if Jansen was going when he has been around emerging Ireland camp etc and I dont think he was listed on the players out of contract posted a few days back.

The backrows listed there were Dowling, SOB and SHL, I would hope of the 3 SHL especially would be kept on at least but all 3 have had injury problems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 864 ✭✭✭ShineyShiney

Hard to evaluate this signing until we see the other side of it. If Connors is joining us instead one of our senior back row options of Boyle, SHL, Jansen, Josh Murphy, or Prendergast then its a big negative, considering his history. Good player when fit and hopefully he is fully fit and rearing to go but Penny or Deegan would probably have been a more significant signing.

I would think that the NIQ ness of SHL means hes the one most at risk. Hope not cos hes quality but he is one of 3 that are out of contract.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,236 ✭✭✭CowboyTed

Keep him fit and it is a steal…

Kept fit he goes to the next RWC.

Jackman saying Joe Joyce to Gloucester. Devine talking to Munster.

All here say I know but…….

You would have e to think we don’t need or can’t afford to just add him. So someone must be going.

You’d have to think we can’t just afford to add him, nor do we need another body surely. So someone must be going.

May well be SHL. Forgot about him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,988 ✭✭✭ionadnapóca

Agree. I might be completely wrong but 2020 Connors is not coming back.
A good signing if its an addition to what is already there.
Connacht desperately need 'dogs of war'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,219 ✭✭✭KBurke85

Also linked with Hodnett from Munster and it's likely SHL will be the player leaving

honestly will connors will be a great signing injuries or not… the man has done his phd in tackling… he a defence leader and coach wrapped up in a player who will want to prove a point… he’s going to work with and for a coach he’s known all his playing career… absolutely delighted for Connaught from a diehard munsterfan
