There's every chance in the future that people will have ready refurbished units on the shelf, and just swap them.

I think I would prefer to retain my own original unit rather than getting someone else's

Good news, I got my car (2024 Niro EV K4) back today after suffering a complete battery coolant loss back in September. It was actually a complete battery replacement not just the battery casing as I was initially told. The battery on its own was around €10k, and the total bill came to a bit over €20k including some other parts and labour. All covered under the guarantee of course. The car went into the garage on the 3rd of September, so nearly 4 months in total, most of which was waiting for parts. Had an almost identical Niro EV as a courtesy car in the meantime so not a bad experience overall, but one I could have done without obviously!

Great news for you but unfortunately this is sort of issue is typical of what has turned the trade off EV’s here. If your car was older/out of warranty such an issue would deem it beyond economical repair. It’s playing no small part in why EV residuals are so poor and used EV’s so hard to sell at the moment.

Generally same could be said for ICE cars too, I know someone who's timing belt broke, Was a toss up whether the car was worth fixing.

    - Yes it should have been done in normal maintenance and the log book said it was done. But by the looks of it, it wasnt.

Wet belts are causing a lot of grief too apparently.

Yes, it’s the same for ICE vehicles but at the moment there are lots of relatively affordable options for replacement engines etc. Example here for supply & fit for a BMW engine; https://www.donedeal.ie/view/22954665

Aftermarket complete batteries from the likes of EV breakers in Newry are relatively cheap and you can often sell the old battery for those who want to replace individual cells. Dealer prices are just silly.

I wonder how much an N47 engine is brand new from BMW

Just about to set off on a trip - car charged to 100%. As I'm packing the boot, I've noticed the hazard lights blinking intermittently a few times. Didn't find anything in my initial quick search on kia.com, but I'm wondering if it's an indication that the 12v battery might be on the way out - if so, I have a jump pack in the car anyway but would rather not have to deal with it when I'm hours from home. However, I have to hit the road now to get where we're going - can anyone confirm if that's what it might be, or if not that then what it does indicate?

Have you got a digital multimeter to check the voltage ? Not something I ever hear of tbh

Haven't heard anything like that, maybe the buttons on the key fob being accidentally pressed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 805 ✭✭✭mr chips

Was wondering that, but although the key was in my pocket I'm pretty sure there was nothing pushing against it. Maybe one of the buttons was sticking a bit, or something like that. Hasn't happened since we landed and the car is charging away on the granny plug, so hopefully it's one of those magical glitches that resolves itself and never ever recurs ... ;-)

God help anyone coming to my house with an EV. I ain't giving anyone any power other than "maybe" from 02:00 - 05:00 🤣

Did you switch to the new Kia app recently, and have it open? I've noticed that the hazards flash intermittently when using the new app (possibly when connecting disconnecting). Might be it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 805 ✭✭✭mr chips

Don't think so - car's too old to get app updates (early 2020 FE). Only other thing I can think of is that the first time I noticed it happen, my key was briefly in the same coat pocket as my phone when I went out first thing this morning - not sure if the signal from one might have somehow interacted with the other in some way? But in any case, that wasn't the case later on in the morning when the same thing was still happening.

The Kia app is on the phone. Car software was never updatable over WiFi nor pushable from a remote device. Car can only be updated via USB.

The FE (First Edition MY19) is more restricted, in that it doesn't have UVO. This arrived with SE (Second Edition MY20) cars from March 2020

What he said ^^. I was referring to the mobile app. Since updating to the new (intrusive) KIA mobile app, I noticed that the lights in the car flash occasionally when interacting with the vehicle. But if you don't use the mobile app, that ain't it.

Incidentally, mine is also an early 2020, and I update the maps and infotainment system software frequently (via USB).

Oh ok, I'll have to look into this. Thought I'd read somewhere that my car wouldn't be able to get much or anything in terms of app updates, so I never bothered trying and forgot all about it tbh. Is it via kia.com I would get them, or would I have to call into the dealer? And was there something about certain updates making the touchscreen response slower/more laggy, or am I thinking of something else?

You can get infotainment updates that you can update via a usb key.

No app unfortunately on the FE with the small screen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 805 ✭✭✭mr chips

Ah cheers, so I wasn't wrong about not having an app (not that it bothers me). I wonder is it even worth getting the infotainment updates? If it meant that the car's own satnav was brought up to date then it might be worth it, especially if that included newer charging locations, but I can get that via plugshare etc anyway so it's not crucial. I've no problem with how things are at present and if I'm remembering right about updates making the infotainment run slower then I'd leave it alone - I wouldn't want to do anything that made the system less user-friendly overall.

Updates do cause it to run slower but built sat nav will then show some newer bypasses etc. If you use Apple car play) Android Auto less of an issue. In plugshare app you can also select directions and Google maps will direct you to the charging station.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 805 ✭✭✭mr chips

Cheers - yeah, I normally use gmaps/waze etc via android auto anyway, so if the only benefit to getting an update is the built-in satnav then it's probably not worth the trade-off wrt touchscreen responsiveness.

Is Niro officially retired now? I only just noticed they're not on the Kia site.

I was actually surprised when the last model came out, after EV6. I was expecting everything to be EV[X] from that point.

It's not in the 2026 brochure.

I'm stuck in the service station looking at brochure while waiting on them to fix another battery coolant issue. I've had it replaced twice and each time I had to bring it back because it fell below the minimum due to air bubbles.

I spend a lot longer having the eNiro serviced than my ICE car. Needs a service every 15k rather than every 25k and lots of other minor issues with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 684 ✭✭✭Killer K

What kind of ICE have you that it has a service interval of 25k? Or have I misunderstood.

Sorry, my ICE car needs a service every 15k too. Don't know why I thought it was 25…

BMW diesels have service interval 30 k kms or 2 years

Yup, unfortunately that just about gets them to end of warranty and they start having big issues if these guidelines are followed. Big red flag for me if buying a used BMW tbh.
