the chap lasted the full two years which I’m impressed at because it was a bad fit for all concerned. Can absolutely get why he took the gig though and hope he enjoyed the time in the big, big smoke.

Yeah the YT stuff is definitely a smokescreen but that’s inevitable.

So what happens for Q102 now? They were chancing their arms with the syndication as it was; they’re hardly going to be allowed relay whoever Virgin put on that timeslot next?

I like how the YouTube thing is being bigged up as some sort of major deal, as if its a natural progression from Virgin Radio.

Me or you could set up a YT channel and chat p1sh on it. He will of course have access to slightly more famous people, but if his book review podcast is anything to go by, he won't have very big names and the viewing figures will be embarrassing as well. Time will tell I suppose. This all reeks of the dying embers of his career, trying anything to keep himself relevant and in the news.

In reality, he is a busted flush, yesterday's man. He was one of the most famous presenters on tv, now he is basically a nobody that few folk will find the time to chat to on a YT channel viewed by a few hundred. Hes in his 50s now, and the media world has left him behind. He can only dream about gettinf himself back on to Rte, or any Irish channel for that matter. Even being on Arena or Rte Gold would be better for his reputation than this YT thing will be.

Once this fails I dont see where he goes next. I suppose he still has the head of Rte saying he could return one day, so he will always have hope.

Ray Darcy or Suzanne Kane for Q mid-mornings would be my bet.

So his new syndicated weekend show might attract 30k listeners in Ireland if he’s lucky - I’ve no idea what he’s going to do on a UK sports channel and I’d doubt many will care either so that’s just another damp squib.

The YouTube Tonight show with Ryan - is purely about harping on about famous Hollywood celebrities and films - long gone and past.

For that, all you do is take a chat gpt script and set it to read out loud in the style of RT, and essentially that’s it- you have a YT show- edit in a bit of music - read out some made up letter from a “fan”- and there ya have it-rinse and repeat each week from wherever you are in the world

It’s my guess that he’s not coming back to RTÉ - but my opinion that it would be a complete waste of taxpayers money if he does- the “emperor” is finally b0ll0ck naked, given this garbage he’s doing pretending that it’s some sort of career progression from his last show-it’s not- and RTÉ and the taxpayers aren’t here to hand him 250k annually either to help him put some clothes back on .

He made his money in the last decade- I hope he’s invested wisely as he won’t make that money again

Suzanne would be a good call. D’Arcy would just be the same thing as Tubbs.

D’Arcy is another presenter who made his money in the good times when RTÉ management were asleep at the wheel and lining their own pension nests- his best option is to manage his finances (which should be considerable at this point) and do some low profile media work occasionally - maybe an independently produced documentary show - something in the sports area, possibly running or athletics or cycling - the days of listening to pontificating tripe by DJ’s on day time magazine style radio shows is long gone thank fck- the difference between Tubs and D’Arcy in my view, is that D’Arcy likely knew he was on borrowed time and the gig would be up at some stage - Tubs believed his hype - and from this latest press release, it sounds like he still does.

As I said before, as long as I’m not paying for him as a taxpayer, good luck to him and I don’t care what he does-just stay away from RTÉ - I never want to hear or see him on our national station again as a paid presenter

He wants to come to Ireland but then says he's going to be in UK 3 days a week. It doesn't make any sense.

His YouTube figures for his book author interview thing are very very low.

Now he's going to be based back in Ireland he'll have to put up with more Irish negativity, one thing we're famous for.

Looking forward to listening to him at the weekends on Q102 and seeing how the YT project develops.

don’t think they aren’t still asleep at the wheel just look at Dathi o se pay.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

What would he be doing in England three days a week if he's walked from his radio gig?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭Cyclingtourist

You think he's moving back to Dublin because it will mean he pays less tax? How's that work?

jolly banter in the devonshire with every 2nd irish person asking him to return as the toyman no doubt, as well as pretending to read books on the tube

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,830 ✭✭✭yagan

There may be some tax back claim if he resides in England for just under half the year. It's not uncommon.

Edit to add running a Youtube channel in the UK as a business could purely be for tax reasons.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭Cyclingtourist

Well that sounds like it's a form of equalisation, hardly likely to be significant enough to offset weekly commutes.

Regarding your edit, that's a legitimate tax deduction, presumably also available if he were living full time in the UK from the UK tax authorities.

You're not making a very convincing case.

I guess he’s going to be in the U.K. a day or 2 a week doing whatever NewsUK who seem to be setting up this YouTube channel for him want. The articles suggest all the content will be from their archives and presumably most of the guests will be in house journalists or contributors to News uk papers or radio stations. So I’d guess they will need him to interview London based people in person to try to make it look more professional than a VoIP call

But he’s given up the flat by the look of it so I’m sure he’ll be able to expense the flights and hotel against whatever he is being paid. Still seems more to keep up appearances rather than a serious money making job

He's recently married an Irish clinical psychologist who presumably has her practice here, so I would imagine he wants to spend as much time as possible in Dublin so as to be with her.

Thanks for the laugh on this grey and miserable morning. That headline "News Broadcasting expands its relationship with Ryan Tubridy in 2026" is certainly something. What was a five-days-a-week show in the UK and Ireland plus a weekend show in Ireland is now a YouTube show and a weekend show in Ireland, plus "contributing to" Times Radio and "developing" a show on TALKSport, is now somehow an expansion.

I think that is why I never had any interest in working in media or marketing, must be tough putting a positive spin on everything.

I assume we'll never hear the TALKSport show, lots of shows (radio and television) go into "development" but never make it to air.

Well it's not like his previous Youtube adventure come to much with views in the hundreds.

Mad4motors (I think he's Dundalk based) has over a million subscribers and only around 60 videos, but many of them have millions of views. "I'm on Youtube" might sound impressive to someone who can barely tune a radio, but for everyone else it's pedestrian.

Let’s be honest. There’s no way there should still be a Ryan Tubrudy thread still going, or IT articles either. He quit the Late Late over 2 years ago now and has moved on from RTE. The Late Late has moved on and so has Ryan.

He’s not living off the taxpayer at this stage and his wife no doubt earns a good living from her work which frees him up now to do a few bits but he’s not on the dole. His media career is looking like it’s winding down though.

At best now he’s a hired compère for this YouTube thing. He won’t attract views from many searching for RT content. Most will be from viewers interested in the stories and who won’t care or even think about who the compere is. He’s also got a weekend Q gig. How long will that last?

He should, in my opinion, ficus now on his strengths. He has firm as an author of political and historical works and could build on that. I’m sure he could build that to get a regular column writing on intersting political items from the past. Publish more books and establish himself as an authority on an area. That actually might get him back in the door at RTE as an occasional contributor and maybe eventually a small show on historical events.

It’s clear though that his career behind the mic is winding down and not in a good way. IMHO he’d have done himself more service by disappearing from the limelight after the RTE gig ended and waiting a few years before popping up again. I don’t think anyone’s heard from Ray since he left. Not a fan myself but at least he’s showing some class.

it just comes across as desperation for attention, any attention regardless of how trite the announcement is

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,830 ✭✭✭yagan

    Class?

Did he attach an apology with the money he repaid? At least Gavin accepted his political career was over when he refunded what he owed.

I've heard zero recalcitrance from Tubs.

I wonder what the theme will be maybe

"Me and Dr Kambamettu all your health issues discussed with the Dr, if you have arthritis or your hip is not moving Tubs and Kambamettu will get it moving for you "

Or he could be like Mr Motivator for all the OAPs "One Two ,Three , Four ....."
