Ok. Good. And would you say he was badly advised taking the Virgin/Q102 gig then?

Tubs knows as much about sport, as my arse knows about snipeshooting!

At least D'Arcy went out kicking and screaming....

Tubridy got the bullet again and he is in pure denial coming out with nonsense about Youtube etc - look how pathetic his podcast turned out.....

Its disgusting how much RTE shelled out on this fraud over the years....

No, it's a difficult market that's dumbing down more and more and people are becoming increasingly interested in polemics rather than debate. He was out of a job and was right to take what was offered.

Now it's time to move on.

    He's warm, intelligent and personable.

No, you just don't get it.

Tubs is a once-in-a-generation talent. Wogan, Andrews, Norton, Ross et al can't hold a candle to Ryan. It's incredible he has stayed so long in the relatively small market that is Ireland. In fact, I'd say we are blessed to have him here in Ireland. Therefore, he deserves every penny from us. If he ever felt short-changed, he'd walk out and by the time he'd have reached the Stillorgan dual carriageway, he'd have signed a 10-year deal with the BBC for a Friday night talk show. He's that good.

    Signed,

    Dee Forbes circa 2018

Tubs was never a Debater in RTÉ. He presented entertainment shows. Unlikely that anything difficult would ever come up, he and his team designed it that way. "Take me away from any controversy." He airs on which ever way the wind is blowing, and he avoids any real statements about anything.

As someone pointed out how could he present Arena if he is so unwilling to be critical about anything produced.

He's fake and what he lacks in personality he hides behind platitudes,

"A Great Irish Film", "I'll give it one more go", "Your right I didn't know how good it was", "what was the best thing about being in Ireland", "your Irish sure aren't we all great".

Giving him a sports show would be like deciding he should be a celebrity-chef!

How to make a tall glass of lukewarm water, was never a fan of cold water, just don't get it, food what's that about! Toast with unsalted butter, its Kerrygold but without the salty taste. A crisp sandwich with ready salted crisps, who needs cheese and onion?

You are right though it is time to move on.

    ______

In the end they were just greedy, they all knew one another and knew what to expect more money for no return, it was a secure cash flow, but in fairness they looked for what they wanted and fair dues to them for that, and wouldn't you be doing the same!

Just one more thing .... when did they return that car

I would think being a good, solid jock in a format like that hasn't changed much in the last 30 or so years.

The likes of a Chris Evans is exceptional and Tubs was never that. He could have been a lot better and successful than he was, though.

The constant harping on about Ireland and Irishness on a UK rock station was and is bewildering and didn't even land well back on Q102.

It may not be time to move on if these failures are not even acknowledged.

Also, the numerous chances he had during the height of the scandal to show some remorse, acknowledge the hurt caused to audience and colleagues being ignored has been so, so costly to him personally.

The advice he received these past few years seems to have been catastrophic to his career.

That to me is the problem, there is no moving on here. It's stumbling around, grabbing out at something, anything.

Just as well he's a rich man, thanks to us licence fee payers. It seems we didn't need to pay him quite so much in hindsight.

"Tubs was never a Debater in RTÉ. "

    Never said he was.

I was referring to the state of modern media.

An example of that this week. He was interviewing a woman who said that fathers need to get more comfortable in talking to their daughters about their vulvas. Tubs madly agreeing with her. Very few fathers want to talk to their daughter about that, but he just goes along with it.

    Communication was the greatest fatality

If it is the case then Tubs is moving towards a speech driven series that lacks any bite he'll be in a very saturated market.

He's not Conan Doyle who can clearly have an enjoyable conversation with whom he chooses. Tubs largely tried to design himself on Conan, but Conan is a comedian and a writer he knows what works from a light format without this idea he might be stepping on eggshells. Conan won't fall out with the crowd, and but he won't be worried if he is.

Tubs is more like Fallon, teetering on the idea that they too are able reach out to a wide audience that is agreement with then but always doubting where they are actually standing. Conan isn't bother by this.

Mod - @Ardent, @Cyclingtourist and @nachouser, personal abuse of other posters isn't tolerated in the Radio forum.

Calling others losers, begrudgers and borderline stalkers is abuse, any more posts like this will result in a 2 point warning and 2 day forum ban as per the forum charter.

This underlines the lunacy of RTE salaries once again. He gets the boot off UK radio for being rubbish.

What audience is he after? He is a bland ordinary man with bland ordinary opinions. Who wants to listen or watch that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 3,400 ✭✭✭Cyclingtourist

Less negative read on this from the Irish Times.

"In the cut-throat world of British morning radio, he was perhaps a bit too old-school to succeed. But YouTube is big enough for all sorts of talents – or so Tubridy will hope as the “Toy Man” attempts to become the “YouTube Man” and reinvent himself all over again."

Ryan Tubridy attempts to reinvent himself on YouTube. Will it work? – The Irish Times

Apparently YT is now where the viewers are and RTE TV is the old hat.

Indeed, flatearthers, antivaxxers, it's an open door there....

YT might be where the viewers are at, but they won't be watching Tubridy. He'll have to invest in a bot farm to bump his numbers.

The IT article references Piers Morgan, not that RT is likely to get to that level.

I remember when it was being predicted that Tubridy would be lucky to get a job opening envelopes in Reykjavik.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,508 ✭✭✭Morgans

The idea that on his two year anniversary that virgin media asked Tubridy to continue in place and Ryan decided that he wanted to YouTube for impact and to be down with the kids is astonishing.

Clearly, it's where the bored middle class mammies are currently congregating. Noel Kelly has Ryan in a clockwork orange type device watching old toy shows (wasn't this years the best) and telling him that he'll be able to spin it so it doesn't look like a failure. Just you watch me Ryanner.

I don't think he does the research or has the natural curiosity to be interesting. He was lucky that the music took up so much of the show.

Well, that would be an actual job/career for him.

What was announced today is a ball of not very much smoke which won't last in the form that has been announced.

It's simply a fig leaf of dignity for the fella.

These media commentators are worse to be taking it seriously.

Ryan Tubridy - Where did it all go Wrong is the article that maybe Ed Power should have considered.

But no, the Irish media continue to faithfully regurgitate whatever slop NK serves 'em up and take it seriously when in fact, they should be pitying the lad.

NK will be onto UK Conquest regarding the vacancy on the quiz show Skirmish

There will be no pity for a lad who trousered 800k for years while serving up dross across multiple media

True but for all the media outlets to take on face value what was announced today and analyse it seriously as some expansion of his role is a fecking joke.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,662 ✭✭✭✭hotmail.com

Bizarre for certain. It shows how small and bad Irish media is.

Irish Times did admit in their piece that Tubridy is old school. Irish media considerably backward compared to UK media. It's why so many Irish people listen to UK podcasts ahead of Irish ones.

So perhaps some in the media here viewing this with general embarrassment for our entire media.

I've 'trousered' a few K in my day, do the job asked, get paid the agreed amount. That's how it works.

Radio was very lucky with the arrival of 2FM and the pirates IMO.

My Dad's family only ever really listened to the BBC (Dubliners), when my Mam went to visit for the first time she couldn't get over it, but also that they ate dinner while listening to a BBC comedy, she couldn't follow the English accents, and didn't know what they were all laughing about, but also to listen at the dinner table! she grew up with Radio Éireann but even then she and her sister would listen to Radio Luxembourg for the top 40 chart.

BBC listening seem to fall off after the 70s, I could be wrong about this. Certainly by the 90s in Dublin you either listened to 2FM, FM104 or 98FM, with your Mam listening to RTÉ Radio 1. But it seemed to me that even My Father sister who grew up with BBC radio was now listening to local radio.

The JNRLs certainly protected the Radio stations from BBC audience figures.

TV didn't get such an advantage when Broadcasting was in its golden age, I am sure people watch RTÉ but most were watching BBC, ITV and Channel 4 by the 90s certainly in Dublin.

One would assume that since there is no longer a Ryan Tubridy Show, the thread would be closed?
