Have most of the build complete. Last part is just drilling the holes for the bearing blocks on the top plate.

Seems fairly sturdy. Have sat on the bike and trainer with it setup, just without the top plate fully attached. Sure time will tell if using OSB on the top plate might have been a mistake.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 227 ✭✭mitchelsontour

You can always replace the top plate so don't worry about it.

Give an update if the OSB works/fails so the there is a frame of reference for another diy'er

Hope the build was fun. It's very satisfying when you're up and riding and think I built this.

Black Friday shopping: 2 chains, 1 cassette (12-32), 1 pair of chainwheels (39-53), 4 pairs of rim brake blocks.

Not in the post as such but ordered. I doubt they're as good as similar from Oakley/Rudy Project etc. but they're a lot cheaper and I got them "free" with the Specsavers 2 for 1. Will report how they go.

38cm carbon handle bars from amazon. Gonna throw them on the gravel bike, which currently has 42cm and i've felt has always been a bit wide and the drops measuring 46cm. Already have 40cm Specialized short reach bars on the road bike.

New shoes for the race season, have these already but new whites always good.

    https://www.bike-discount.de/en/northwave-revolution-3-road-bike-shoes-2

€140 delivered is a very good price for a premium shoe.

I find them them true to size as all my footwear is 11 though I had the fortune of trying this brand in an lbs some years ago for sizing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,847 ✭✭✭JMcL

I did find I had to size up by 1 (45 - 46) - partially down to my feet being wide, though there's not a huge amount of spare room in the toe-box. They're slightly wide fitting, but not super wide, and I wouldn't mind another couple of mm in width, but they're such a nice pair of shoes, I'm sticking with them.

Just to note, I've got the Rebel 3 which is exactly the same shoe but with SPD fittings and cleats. I had the Revolution before and while happy with the fit, just couldn't get on with road pedals. I still use them on the turbo though

Not on the way but just delivered out of the blue and I had almost forgotten about it as I ordered in September - a new Fairlight Secan 3.0 gravel frameset.

Don't have a groupset for it yet so won't be building it up for a while. Probably going to go with the new GRX Di2, although tempted to see what happens with 1x GRX Di2 first

Magura brakepads for my loved but neglected MTB. I took it out for a quick once over at the start of the frost and the front brake fell apart in my hands when I took it out, ordered to the LBS.

I am looking at a pair of Chinese Handlebars from Panda Podium, I had found cheaper from AliExpress but am not confident, anyone have any trustworthy suppliers over there (my size isn't sold over the counter here).

Titanium Seatpost a present to myself for Christmas

    SMP dynamic saddle

I have bars and a seatpost from og-evkin which are perfect. I've seen youtube videos from TraceVelo and he has built up a bunch of their bikes etc. They're more expensive than some of the stuff you find on AliExpress but I think they're good quality and wouldn't like the risk of trying to cheap out too much.

Galibier AQUA Chrono Aero overshoes just arrived, thanks to @Seth Brundle for the discount code.

Another Thru Axle on the way, perfectly rounded this one this time. I never learn.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,785 ✭✭✭cletus

Most thru axles seem to be made of cheese.

You should get yourself a good set of hex keys, tight tolerances can help reduce damage to the fastener.

Drop into the New Tool Tuesday thread, some good recommendations there 😁

Alas not the Allen Keys fault, over tightened and then accidentally went the wrong way again while asleep. Went to loosen but it eventually just gave up and rounded out completely. Managed to extract it with an extractor and no damage to threads somehow. I was tempted to cut a ridge or simply use the extractor but it's just kicking the can down the road or something worse will happen.

Just took delivery of a Shimano C60 ultegra wheelset, very excited. 1000e from mantel. Looking forward to whooshing about the place for the summer. Also got myself a Wahoo Roam v2. Didn't realize how much bigger it is compared to my old bolt.

Received a ravemen 300 light last week, waiting on a mips helmet now!

Miche 54/40 12 speed chainrings for a Giant Propel.

There will be other bits to build up a new frame but it will take time sadly..

Had a £10 voucher for Amazon, so I ordered a set of the new Schwalbe Clik Valves and pump head.

Haven't installed the valves yet, but the pump head sits securely in any schrader pump head I have

Cant afford a fairlight frame and wanted to move on from the Nuroad frame, so ive ordered a Seaboard CX07. €320 after discounts on ali.

Plan is to move the old 11 speed groupset onto it. But would like to try the new shimano 1x in the near future. Its a bit pricey though...

My little project for the new year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,785 ✭✭✭cletus

I know you've already bought the frame, but there's a good article on Escape Collective about buying and building up the Seaboard CT1.

There's some info in there that might prove useful.

It may or may not be behind a paywall if you go to the website, but if it is paywalled, pm me here and I can 'gift' you the article via email

The chain stay issue is a bit mad, otherwise some minor issues with your mans build.

With my road bike I've also had to use a washer to get my wheeltop rear mech to clear the frame, so im not to fussed with the likes.

Sure we'll see how it goes. People seem to rate the steel frames well enough on reddit and your man trace velos build pushed us to trying out the gravel specific one.

Got a voucher from work for xmas, so treated myself to some new Castelli gear and a new helmet to replace the gear I destroyed falling off last month. Also ordered new tyres, pedals, gels and a few other bits

Got a Temu bike hair / bike dryer compressed air thingy coming for the laugh. See if it's any use!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 975 ✭✭✭oinkely

ali express frame bag and seat pack on the way - if they get use but aren't great quality i'll go for something a bit more fancy pants - these might be gateway bike packing bags! Already have a planet x bar roll dry bag thing with harness that was on sale a few years back for very small money - used it once, so these might be similar. Or maybe having a full set might lead to some mtb camping adventures (i live in hope ;-))

Could you post a product review when it arrives please as i've been hunting for something to dry off the bike quickly after washing.
