Was in Galway city until 2pm and it was fairly calm. Started to pick up as I headed west to Oughterard. Squally enough now alright. Mace Head reported a 98km/h gust (Mean windspeed of 78km/h which is high orange) at 3pm but nothing much happening in Athenry.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Gone very windy and blustery here now. A lot stronger than earlier wind direction has moved from south to southwesterly and increased in power and gusts.
Apps all said worst was on its way around 3pm and start to ease after an hour or so.

I would think the biggest storm since ‘Darwin’ in Feb 2014? I just hope it’s peaking around now before my roof get damaged.

good question - I'm 50ish - all I can remember was school shut for snow or on occasion the broken heating system. Certainly the weather warning system is designed to put more rigour to emergency planning etc . Also while we had bad weather years ago, was it as frequent as it is now ? I think not …. I'm sure there is Met Eireann data

Getting really wild in Dublin Bay now, up to 69 knots (128km/h), that's into Hurricane Force 12 territory. Waves are 3.5m and building!

Not up near Roundwood - currently the worst it's been all day, and power just back after a relatively brief outage. Darragh did a fair amount of damage up here too around this time last year - no idea if it was windier (might have been the direction?) but definitely more consequential than this so far (or even eowyn).

No flights in or out of Dublin at the moment, windshear too bad

kicking off now just outside Carrick on Shannon

Wind getting louder now here in south Mayo. The ESB power check map gives a good indicator of the storm moving up the country and knocking power out as it moves along.

literally a minute after I posted that, it kicked off! Couldn’t write it

Not quite as bad in Arklow now, rain currently stopped and gusts of wind not as frequent or violent. Haven't seen the Avoca River as high in a long time.

Good call, I had a look it was set to relative, not absolute. Now showing 965 maybe off a bit still, but better.

To be honest it needs replacing, a job for the new year.

Switch in wind direction in Meath to SW and getting wild again. Should really be ramping up with you guys out west from now. Donegal will be interesting later this evening.

It's not the 'prettiest ' looking storm on the satellite imagery due to its elongated center. Take care on the roads.

I think the Oranmore schools went extra precautionary after storm Éowyn.

We’re all still traumatised here in Athenry after it! This storm isn’t a patch on Debi or Dara here, never mind Eowyn thankfully.

98kmh gust there a few minutes ago, a new December record for me here (previous was 90kmh). and my joint highest 4th gust overall (record is 104kmh set 09/01/2015).

I was out the back garden securing a small greenhouse and not going to lie, that was a bit scary.

Seems Dublin Airport just paused all departures due to wind speeds. Some planes called back to the terminal.

Storm Eowyn was the biggest storm I have ever witnessed by a long shot. 183 km/h gust in Mace Head was record breaking.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

AAAnd it's just hit here now, getting 30mph gusts, from the West now, howling outside.

10c on the temp, and power now gone.

    East Meath.

Strange enough here in N Mayo, a few times the gusts have ramped up for 10-20 mins and you think it's starting properly but then it quietens down again to almost dead calm. Not complaining though, I'll be happy enough if it doesn't get any worse than this

Latest icon showing a more benign event for Mayo as the low centre shifts a bit more East - it may explain why it hasn't really kicked off here at all yet, we still dont seem to have breached 80km or so.

Agreed. So far this doesn't feel bad at all, will be interested to see Athenry station readouts as I doubt it is yellow territory never mind orange (yet).

Flying back from Shanghai, I'm installed in my seat, Ive got my blanket, and flight pillow, settling in for the 18 hour flight to Amsterdam, the captain comes on the PA and says "We just got word of a typhoon thats about to cross over us, so we are grounded until it passes". Four hours of the plane rocking side to side, feeling like it would topple over.

That typhoon was nothing compared to Storm Eowyn.

Mid midlans. Heard on Sunday it might ge windy today. Haven't been outside. Sounds bit gusty and not like a storm. When is it due through?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,329 ✭✭✭adocholiday

It's actually very calm here at Rathdrum now so hopefully that's the end of it. Darragh wasn't too impactful for where I live because I'm completely sheltered from the North. North winds blow right over head. Eowyn also wasn't too bad here really compared to the West. But this one was just the right angle to hit the gable of my house and some of the trees were worryingly sideways at times.

On a positive note my greenhouse that I put up last March stood firm so I'm more confident in my construction skills now!

Storm Eowyn was frightening here in South Sligo, it is perhaps why today (although ramping up the last 30 minutes) seems almost mild in comparison.
