Today is my annual Xmas shopping day. Damn you Bram! Will nip into Galway city and be out at lunchtime before the worst of it hits (2-3pm looks like peak). People will be getting some rushed ideas this year 🙂

There have been a lot of trees cut and Eir poles replaced since Eowyn so hopefully we don't lose power/internet. As others have said, it's very mild. Almost sweaty.

What are they doing in the Hyacinth house?

Unfortunately people don't have any common sense any more and have to be told everything but on that note it wouldn't be a bad idea to include say 10km ( or whatever else would be deemed appropriate ) inland from the coast on a red marine warning.

A number of schools locally have closed for the day. Sensible IMHO.

It's 14C and rain at the moment. Leitrim.

I have said this numerous times about the Red warnings on Coasts take Galway the Red warning goes right into the City Centre at the harbour and all around Oranmore Kinvara etc yet its in Orange ,surely it is not just going to change wind speed to Orange, the same applies to the Shannon right up to Limerick City and the surrounding areas, Galway will be packed today with Christmas shoppers and the Christmas market they have to look at these warnings for coastal areas better be safe than sorry.

One for the ahem.. 'older' posters on here. 🙂

My kids creche is closed for the day, as are a lot of local schools (Oranmore Co. Galway).
I don't remember ever having a day off as a kid for a storm, particularly for orange warning territory, is this a result of the warning system that was introduced?
Maybe it did happen but because I wasn't home with the kids or was a child myself I didn't notice!

sounds exciting, but I think you might be on the wrong thread, this one's about a storm coming in!

    Has the storm shifted eastwards?

South and South East to experience the worst?

Older poster here.. I went to the nuns in both primary and secondary so the school was ALWAYS open, as the nuns actually lived there and hadn’t to travel themselves.
In fairness there was never an issue during snow or if my mother decided it was too wet or too stormy to go, it was left up to parents to send you or not.
But mostly I was bundled out …hail rain or snow. I was within walking distance and we hadn’t a car.
    We were hardy kids.
The only definite day off was if an old nun died. There would be whoops of joy when word would go out.

Nothing exciting (yet) in reports/observations. Sherkin, gusting 87kmh, is highest for 0900. Nothing higher before that.

I don’t remember getting days off for weather. I didn’t miss many days of school due to sickness due to my mother being a nurse. The old “I don’t feel well” didn’t work.

Very tame in Dublin City rn

Went to primary school in the 90s plenty of days off due to weather. The rural power supply used to fail quite a lot then, I suppose the infrastructure for power lines wasn't as good because power cuts were far more common, the reason for school closures was mostly due to no heat working because of no power, so yeah it definitely happened.

Latest GFS has strongest winds south coast and South East. Rosslare is in a red category I would suggest. Rest of the country it's a high yellow.

But you could have the argument about neighbouring counties, the red warning isn't for the conditions in Galway harbour,if the forecast was red for there Galway would be red, it's for another part of the sea area.

gradually picking up in cork city with some stronger gusts appearing now

I know how you feel. Have a knot in my stomach since last night. Starting to whip up here (Longford) but nothing of note yet. I'm assuming power will be gone at a minimum just hoping no serious damage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,256 ✭✭✭Storm 10

Look at ME the Red is right into Galway harbour how close does it have to be.

Heard from a friend that there is already damage in Nenagh due to trees coming down because the ground is so waterlogged. ESB were just in to let them know they might have to cut power to fix the damage.

The core of strong winds are hitting the SE coast and going up the irish sea. Isle of man have issued a red warning latest GFS has them in the 135kph to 140kph gust zone

On a separate note, it is 16°C in parts of Ireland at 10am, including at Phoenix Park in Dublin where the previous record high for this date was set in 1994 (14.5 °C).

Picking up now in Cork. Reminder if you can, stay off the roads along the South Coast between 12 and 3. If you've something to do right now is best
