Curious how hard Leafs, the older ones anyway, seem to be on 12V batteries. It's not like they ever have to crank an engine.

I replaced the Panasonic OEM battery in a petrol Corolla… it was 14 years old.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

It depends on usage, brand of battery, outside temperature. The main thing that kills batteries is cold and leaving lights on or boot lights left on etc.

Some model leafs had a tiny solar panel in the spoiler to top up the 12 volt. With any car there is a risk of a flat battery, having a small jumper pack in the glove box is the way to go. If your 12 volt has been flat for more than 12 hours it's likely going to need replacing and will go again. Many small battery leaf drivers may not drive the car daily so it may be sitting around for days. The cars are also getting old now.

First NCT done on the 2015 Leaf Tekna I bought in NI. Failed first time on windscreen chip and a leaky rear damper. Replaced the rear dampers myself and got the w/screen done by Autoglass. Passed today. Happy days.

2015 leaf failed NCT on rusted rear brake back plates. My local garage couldn’t find any non OEM ones, Nissan wanted €300 each for them plus a three week lead time. Found on eBay Germany for €120 for the two plus the shipping. I can’t stand this country sometimes, once they arrive will drop them back to my indie.

Sometimes it just takes a bit of looking to save you from being shafted.

They also sell them for 80 quid a pop from carpart and autodoc. I'm sure they could be found cheaper. You got a decent price. The rear ones are not cheap. Front are from around 30 quid a pop.

I'm almost certain you can just remove the backing plate and it will pass😅

If doing a full re-test, probably. But I would replace rather than remove. They do serve a purpose.

I’m also gone for early testing to get my last two year NCT, with Christmas coming if I wait for a full retest I’d lose my chance.

Digitiser replaced today on the 2015 Leaf. All is working now. It was a bit of a pain to do, but I didn't blindly follow the online instructions. I went a bit deeper. I'll post up a video at some stage for those interested. Finally, I could correct the time, use the radio, set charge timers and everything else the screen is needed for. This is a known, common issue, but thankfully is a DIY repair.

From Nissan Leaf owners Ireland Facebook page

How I restored online features with

    OpenCARWINGS! ⚡️📱

If you own a first-generation Nissan Leaf, you know the struggle: once Nissan discontinued support for older servers or 2G/3G networks, our cars lost their "smart" remote features. It was frustrating to lose the ability to preheating the cabin before a drive.

But there is a solution — the

    OpenCARWINGS project!

    What is it?

It’s an open-source project that allows your Leaf to communicate with alternative community servers instead of the official (and now defunct) Nissan servers.

    What’s back online for me:

✅ Remote Climate Control (the best part — no more freezing or overheating cabins!).

    ✅ Real-time battery level monitoring.

✅ Charging timers and energy statistics.

✅ Sending email notification when charging is ending.

    The process (in short):

    * Hardware: I had to access the Telematics Control Unit (TCU) and replace the factory SIM card with my own (an IoT SIM with a minimal data plan works best).

    * Configuration: Using an SD card and specific utilities, I updated the server address (APN) in the car's system.

    * The App: Downloaded the OpenCARWINGS app, registered, and magic happened! The car is back online.

Honestly, it feels like I have a new car again. It’s amazing to see how the enthusiast community keeps our EVs modern and functional even after official support ends.

If you have an older Leaf and miss having app connectivity, I highly recommend checking out the project on GitHub or community forums. It’s absolutely worth it!

The right hand side of my screen is bollocksed. Can you please forward details of where you bought the replacement parts, etc?

I replaced the original battery on my 151 back in the summer, so a good 10 years it lasted.

for the experienced owners out there any thoughts on this car? I’m looking to buy an electric as the second family car https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/40-kw-ev-n-connecta-5dr-auto-buy-with-confidenc/41008289

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,190 ✭✭✭joe1303l

I wouldn’t, well overpriced compared to similar for sale below and better EV’s out there to be got for €10K anyway. (eGolf, Ioniq 28, BMW i3, Kona etc.)

I agree with @joe1303l that it's a bit over priced. Mileage is high for the year and it's a mid spec UK import. You can do better, but don't be put off the Leaf. Great cars. Great value. We have several of them in the family. I started with 2 x 24kWh models replacing our petrol cars. My In-Laws have another 3 of them, one being the dreaded 30kWh and the others are 24kWh. My Daughter owns a 24kWh Tekna model I brought in from NI in October. My Son has a 2018 40kWh Leaf (same spec as the one you linked) I bought in spring 2024. I was directly responsible for choosing every one of them.

As the second car, will it just be a local run around, or will you need more range at any stage? Letting us know the usage of the car will help us help you. Can you install a home charger?

cheers, we’ve four kids and primary care is a 7 seater. Will need to carry all the kids on occasion so need a 5 seater. It’s primarily for the local run around with the odd longer journey around 100km round trip

will be installing a home charger and may be able to push the car budget over €10k but would prefer not to

Under a bit of pressure as the existing second car is very much on its last legs. Have been looking at the Leaf as other options are more scarce from what I can see. Based in Dublin

    I’d go with one of these two if your budget is around €10K;

    https://www.donedeal.ie/view/41264739

    https://www.donedeal.ie/view/41217779

eGolf is an N.I registered car so should be no additional fees to import. I’d rule out the BMW i3 as it doesn’t have 5 seats.

That's how we started. We had an E200k and a 7 seater Zafira. Replaced the E200 with a 2014 Leaf when going electric. The 7 seater was left untouched for a couple of months, as both of us only wanted to drive the Leaf. So, we picked up a 2012 bargain Leaf and sold the Zafira. It was cheaper to run both cars when we needed more than 5 seats, but that's not to say we don't miss having 7 seats.

If you get a good battery 24kWh Leaf, it will just about get that 100km 10 months of the year. You will be wanting 11 out of 12 bars. You could get one for around €5k. I did…in October. Found one in NI. 2015 Tekna model. 11 bars. You have to be ready to snap them up when they pop up. If going for a 40kWh model, it's gonna cost closer to the budget, but will give you more range of course.

got a call that the new pricing is out, about as expected, starting 35k, 40k for larger battery. Reasonable enough compared to the competition but not amazing. Can pay almost 50k for top spec 580km wltp range which is pretty steep for a small car

still nothing on whether the Ariya facelift will start from 40k still

    Hi all,

Looking at a second hand leaf and came across this one - any comments on how this is priced? Seems decent enough to me looking at photos and low mileage too. Im not to clued in on second hand prices and there is a wide variance in model types/conditons/years so its hard enough to compare

Looks OK to me. I prefer the higher spec, but it's not a deal breaker. Use LeafSpy to check battery health on any Leaf you look at. Of course, do the usual checks.

All Leafs are CHAdeMO for fast DC charging.

    Variants - General

    Visia/Xe is basic spec. Avoid.

Acenta/SV mid spec. Most common, sat nav. Alloys. Rev camera. (Plus and N-Connecta models may have 360 rev camera, folding mirrors and heated rear seat)

Tekna/SVE top spec. All the above, plus leather seats, larger alloys. Better sound system.

    YEARS

    2011-2013 24kWh cr@p chemistry battery . Type 1 charge port.

    2013-2017 24kWh better battery. Type 1 port.

2016-2018 30kWh battery. Not great and degraded quicker than the 24kWh. Type 1 port.

2018-2022 40kWh and 60kWh face-lift versions. 1 pedal driving in premium versions. Type 2 port.

2022-2025 40&60kWh versions. Mild face-lift to match Nissan current design language. Different grille and wheels.

2026 New Leaf (in name only). Different car. Priced too high imo for now. CHAdeMO is gone at least.

Thanks, that's very helpful summary. 18 - 2022 40kWh Battery is prob the one I'm after

My Sister in law is in the market for a cheap leaf. I remember people on this thread very knowledgeable on them, in particular the battery variants. Some are more desirable and others to stay away from? Could someone recap this info for me?

I posted the variants and details list above for you.

    What is the budget?

What driving will she need it for? Commuting distance…any longer distances etc.

Does she have a charger and if not, can she have one installed?

IMO, if the budget is there, for around €10k, she can get a very decent 40kWh Leaf, or if she only needs a run around the town, then as little as 3 or 4k will secure a suitable 24kWh. I bought a 2015 one a couple months ago for €4k. Tekna spec. Excellent battery health 11/12 bars. I posted it in here. I was willing to travel up north for it and had the funds ready.

Battery tech not good on these. If budget allows, an eGolf, Ioniq 28 or a BMW i3 would be a safer bet.
