I know some one who buys the best cows every year buys around 5cows evert year from herbies heifers, Norman Connelly they top class sales. This year he has spend 30k on 5. He breeds top class calves in fairness I must say, I on the other hand can't afford to buy any due to building a shed and drainage work and so on so having to breed my own its a slower process and I have to keep some cows that should be moved on dairy cross black white heads and so on, but I try to breed good lim heifers from these. Anyway his average sale price was about 200 euro more per head than me without the outlay I would like to think I am coming out ahead. Some of my own breeding is starting to pay off breeding calves on par or close enough

The way to make money in beef is adaptability and being able to do the figures on different options. We bought a friesian calf that was April born and under a cows for 5 months he is squeezed now and hitting 300kgs LW. The cow will have plenty if milk for two calves. Is there risks yes you will need to milk out the cows if not dry, some of the calves may get handy and there us a. It if work in it.

Even to buy average suckker cows or heifers you are looking at a cost of 1.8-3k an animal to produce a weanling in the 12-1800 euro bracket. You have no idea of tge back breeding in many cases and are judging by eye.

IIt Woukd be very easy to get caught up in the present hubris and spend 50k on stock and have very little saleable in 12 months time. Sucklers are not something you can get into turnover fast.

Most suckler farmers have 25-40 years breeding behind them from whenever they got out of milking. You would be cracked to try and start that up over night.

    All bluff as usual.

I have well fleshed continentals 700kg plus, hopefully lads will hold off until the new tax year and they'll be tighter for stock.

€7.80 I'd be hoping for at least.

Will this bluetongue thing send a (perceived) shiver through the market?

Are flat prices going? I have a few overagers I've been holding onto until the flat price comes back. Couldn't get flat over the past month.

It seems to be the same in Birr, the few I watched. Fresians straight out of the parlour. Market could be a bit jittery but will probably settle by the end of the week. Could be a good time to buy in case marts close early for Christmas.

The photo there isn't a great advert for hormones.

It's great advert for animal cruelty though. Skin and bone.

Na there the type of stores you would like to be buying

@Lime Tree Farm that is the reason they use hormones. Put big empty cattle like that into a feedlot, give them a hormones pellet behind the ear and they will do 1.5-2 kgs a day for 6 months. Hormones are not used until they hit the feeding stage

Not really those cattle are semi feral. I have seen cattle aa hungry in Ireland and hungrier looking in Australia. You see cattle lije that in countries tgat suffer drought.

Nelore is the most common breed in Brazil. They look like Nelore in the photo. Brahams have larger ears a bit like nubiam goats I think

    The Journal today:

"The beef trade remains in a steady position this week on the back of tight supplies and solid demand in the run-up to the Christmas holiday period.

Agents are reported to be anxious for finished cattle, with most processors leaving quotes unchanged from last week.

Bullocks are working off a base price of €7.40/kg, with heifers coming in at €7.50/kg"

If they're anxious they should be paying more.

anything with fr in it will eat more than a beefier animal

    friesans are incredibly hungry animals

a friend of mine runs a good shapey lm bull on his 20 cows and buys in 2 r grade heifers a year sells every calf

none of the cows are fancy

cows are i think 620kg average and he will be in the top prices every day he sells weanlings u grades all day and the odd e

rarely pulls anything but is an excellent operator

Kill was 30200 last week similar to the two previous. Processors seem happy enough ⁷with that level of throughput. Any factory may be short of specific cattle for specific contracts but they are probably happy enough at that.

The next few weeks will be interesting if they continue to kill at that level they can fill chills for January on or they may slow it down and back up cattle on farms. Obvious there is processing quota's being adhered to by specific factories.

It's a kind of a score draw situation at present. They could sell more but they are unwilling to up numbers or compete against each other for supply. The big three still have there feedlot supply to come into play. As well if farmers are holding cattle because of tax liability for 2025 that will help them.in January and February.
