Agreed, but that's because it is antisemitism, and Ireland has a problem with antisemitism.

I didn't think so until the last two years, but this is just one of the more blatant examples, because they are elected representatives and because while Conor Reddy is probably the most extreme, there are so many others that initially it seemed the vote would pass no problem. Dermot Lacey was initially the only one to object. One councillor.

It was only once the government started to panic about how bad this looked internationally that others then began to row back a bit. But we still don't know for sure that it won't be voted.

Though it would be a tiny bit misleading to refer to Herzog as an Irish Jewish person only - he very much became associated with the state of Israel and spent 20 years in the IDF as an adult (that doesn't negate his Irishness of course).

In the false equivalence with the NI conflict, there's something particularly nauseating about the hypocrisy of people in the south, who were so terrified of seeming to support the IRA that they threw all northern nationalists under the bus* every chance they got, starting with Jack Lynch and "We will not stand idly by" as they stood idly by, but also most of the population, who considered us basically savages - I was told that about "you northerners" more than once when I was a student in Dublin.

And now that there's no possible risk to them of the troubles spreading south, now they're rewriting history to make out that the IRA were freedom fighters and that they always supported them "really". FFS

    * Look at how John Hume was excoriated by southern politicians and in the southern media for talking the the IRA. Now of course they're all for the Israelis talking to Hamas who have sworn to eliminate them - something the IRA never said.

The park was named after him because of his role in promoting the Oslo accords.

It seems counterproductive (that's if promoting peace is your motivation) to choose to "dishonour" him, particularly now. That's just giving succour to the section of Israeli politics that doesn't want compromise.

But the move is clearly linked to the current situation in Israel, rather than past Israeli history. Even if one strongly disagrees with the renaming and thinks it a crass move, there is a definite connection between it and the ongoing genocide and war crimes in Gaza. Such a move would presumably never have arisen with the Council pre-October 7th.

I don't think these councillors thought through what they were doing though and how their actions would be perceived. They were naïve if they didn't expect a backlash.

Reddy, the guy who celebrated October 7th, presumes to lecture Irish Jews on what constitutes anti-semitism.

It’s the total lack of empathy combined with the utter self-righteousness that is so chilling

But the move is clearly linked to the current situation in Israel, rather than past Israeli history.

I mean, that's my point. This is a man who died long before Oct 2023, and who had the park named after him not because he had been in the IDF, nor indeed because he had helped liberate Bergen Belsen, but because he had been instrumental in what was hoped would be a successful peace process.

If his actions before the Oslo accords were still problematic (in which case why is Gerry Adams considered ok now?) then the time to have a campaign to remove him was back then.

Removing the name now is just picking on the only Jewish person we can humiliate here, and negating his attempt at bringing peace to the region, in effect taking sides in favour of violent attacks on civilians, as long as they're Israeli ones.

If it wasn't just a cheap antisemitic attack on an Irish Jew, we would be actively celebrating his attempts to bring peace, to show that Ireland's problem was with Israelis' actions NOW.

Paul Gadd had an honorary brick in the "wall of fame" of the Cavern Club. He played there.

Do you think they dishonoured him by removing the brick well after his music career was over?

It is almost like a “Cold War” version of the troubles for a new generation. Most of it is background based. Products of their environment.
I still think the councillor who picked this particular park has that twisted mindset for the new generation. The “struggle” being fought vicariously through another distant land. Only this time it is for clicks and views.

If I was a youngster I would fall for it, that is who this type of thing is aimed at. Voters who want to be seen to be anti establishment.

These days though I see through it. It doesn’t sit right with me at all. It solves nothing only creates controversy and sows mistrust and division. While also cheapening Irish History.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I think they’ve got EXACTLY the reaction they wanted. They wanted to be noticed.

The BTEA allowance and "basic income from the arts" payment is funding a lot of them. The latter payment created to win over SF/AAA/PBP voters.

Why is some 4ft nothing smelly girl with blue hair, piercings, steel framed glasses and an elevated BMI worth €325 when someone with Down Syndrome on disability is only worth €200?

The struggle here isn't over, we still haven't achieved a 32 county socialist Republic. Something that Yitzhak Herzog contributed more towards than the councilor who motioned this ever will.

    🙈🙉🙊

    Wow you're reaching there!

Yes of course they did - that was the point. But did Gary Glitter participate in the closest thing the Middle East got to a long term solution and peace between Israel and Palestine, or did his paedophile proclivities just get found out later on? Removing the honours that had been given to him in light of stuff that wasn't (officially) known at that time was a perfectly sensible thing to do. What wasn't known about Chaim Herzog in 1995 that we now know?

A more relevant comparison (it would be hard to find a less relevant one, TBF) is why Gerry Adams has been forgiven all his past IRA activities and is now almost an international statesman. Or why Sean Russell, a man who died while actively conspiring to help the Nazis invade Ireland, still has a statue in Fairview Park.

Storm in a teacup. Guess we're not antisemitic any more.

"The Chief Executive of Dublin City Council has indicated that he intends to withdraw a report relating to the changing of the name of Herzog Park in Rathgar, the Lord Mayor of Dublin has said."

Indeed. But like the "modern" SNP, they're all about performance and virtue signalling, not about independence at all.

(He also spoke Irish better than most of those eejits do.)

Sadly not that simple. Can't pour that tea back into the pot. DCC has shown itself to be antisemitic and has only backed down under pressure from a panicked government. There's been no change of heart or realisation other than "Oh ****!"

What is happening in Gaza is genocide so it's fitting. Have you only concentrated on the anti-genocide posters because there's plenty of Islamophobia in this thread.

Tbf theres two of them not just tayto. One thread cant possibly contain the nonsense so it has to spill out.

Whoever thought this was a good idea is brain dead.

    Who's idea was it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,041 ✭✭✭xhomelezz

No I haven't, just don't like spammers making threads difficult to read. You can pass my regards to the poster who keeps copying and pasting articles too, it's about the same what you do. And for your own info, I hate racism in any form.

I'm done with it anyway, because I'm a genocider. Whatever it means.

Ah but you only complain about one side so your dislike of racism seems one sided. And you can tell the other poster yourself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,041 ✭✭✭xhomelezz

    What side? 🤷

Edit: Am I just partially racist? Partially genocider? You should have a say on it. Ah anyway it is waste of my time isn't it..

Edit 2: ah you know what feck it, keep spamming around it doesn't disturb my sleep.

    Victory!!!

    Report will be withdrawn!

A defeat for the far left crazies. Jews have always been a tiny minority here a bit like what they've become in a lot of Islamic countries. Let's not stoop any lower.
