Plan is fine, I would work through your loadings and once that is over look to increase cover at that point.

PMI 24 10 is one of the few VHI plans that doesn't have nightly excess's for overnight stays in Private Hospitals. It does exclude certain hospitals so need to be careful with that one.

If you want to keep the Private room without a nightly excess I would be looking at Connect Simplicity with Laya or HealthGuide 3 with Irish Life Health (with 5% discount here).

If you want to stay with VHI your looking at PMI 48 10 which is very similar to PMI 24 10 but it has a nighlty excess for private rooms of €50 per night. HIA comparison below:

You need to just purchase a new connect choice policy online on 31st of December and do not renew your current plan. You will get a new policy number but worth it potentially for saving and quality of cover.

I wouldn't be ringing them. Just take out a new plan online. You'll get a new membership number but that's not a problem.

Hi Ruddy1987! Thank you for all the great advice.

Family of 4. Both adults (41 and 44 years old) with LAYA Signify and both children (6 and 10 years old) on Essential Health 300. Got a renewal quote for €3,201 for the coming year.

Don’t need maternity cover or any “alternative medicines” cover. Any suggestions?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 724 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

you had some limited cover in private hospitals that you would lose.

If you wanted to stay with Irish Life you could go with first cover that’s c€500. (With discount at the minute) Hia comparison below:

hi Ruddy1987 My renewal is 1/1/26 I’m on PMI3513 a couple over 60. The renewal is €3707. I rang VHI and went through a few things and suggested I move to PMI5310 €3200. Is this a good move. I live in Waterford.

If open to a change of insurer I’d be recommending Inspire or Health Guide 2 with Irish Life Health (with discount see links in other post ). They are better alternatives imo than PMI 53 10.

Be careful with 53 10 as it does not have urgent care minor injury access. If you could take on a larger orthopaedic excess (40% versus 20%) I’d probably look at PMI 52 10. Last other VHI alternative would be Company Plan plus level 1.3.

    Hia comparison

On Laya Control 300 Create but its increased to 4800 euro for 2 adults. Was thinking about LayaProsper Care at 3680 euro. Any thoughts?

Hi Ruddy That time of the year when medical insurance is up for renewal on 1st January. We are a couple in our mid 70s currently on Laya Simply Connect and Simply Connect Plus. My wife would have more medical issues including a rare bone cancer for which she has had surgery with major consequences. She is attending about seven consultants…a mixture of public and private and is a medical card holder. I've had some medical issues in the last ten years though nothing currently. Neither of us are aware of any knee, hip or shoulder issues. Your thoughts across all the providers would be much appreciated.

Signify is a good plan still, if happy with Laya not much better. Essential Health 300 is poor on its own, but has the free child offer so you are only paying for one child. So that's makes it acceptable, however I would consider moving the older child to something like Inspire Plus and leave the second child on Essential Health 300 free

    A few options here: https://www.hia.ie/comparison-tool/results/3AARozQ5OaUxMDE0OcKQkAGhMKM2MDAAk80H6QsbwpVTYM0BOEfNAQqVBwQFCQaQkZOlQWR1bHQAAcPD

I would say you should go to Prosper advanced, its €2,563.55, but you have Private room coverage and full ortho still. Big one is 75% back on Consultants to which is massive if a lot of consultant visits. If you could step down your cover and dont need ortho you could go down to something like Inspire.

Your current plam is very poor unless you need full ortho cover…still poor value.

Prosper care much better plan but just be aware 20% shortfall on ortho.

    Hi ruddy1987

Our renewal date is 01st December.
    2 Adults (51 & 47) on Laya Inspire & 3 children(13, 10 & 6) on Laya Inspire Plus - renewal cost is €4,462

    Any alternatives?

    Thank you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 724 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

As 1st of December I’d pay the extra €16 per adult for connect choice, much better cover than inspire for a 1st of December renewal. 75% for GPs and lower hospital excess.

Inspire plus great value plan for the kids and benefit it offers. No change there.

Ruddy, may I please ask of a suitable alternative plan to look at, was on Essential Health 300 amended to Flex 500 explorer during the year and 19 yr old and 17 yr old on Prosper. Family of 4 two adults 50, One adult has arthritis but no other health issues. Renewal isn’t until end of February and open to looking at other providers. Tia

Whats your renewal date? The reason i ask is…https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2025/1128/1546317-irish-life-health-to-hike-prices/
But there are options for sure just want to see what works best?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 724 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

To early to say whats value…..VHI, Laya and Irish Life all have price increases in January and likely more to follow early in the new year. Follow up in late January and I will give guidance at that point. Problem is a plans thats good value today, might not be good value in a few weeks after price changes or benefit cuts!

Thanks so much…….You have made this a contender for thread of the year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2 magheralane

Thank you Ruddy only getting back to this. Yes I was looking at Prosper Advanced.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 505 ✭✭✭Hugo_Whoriskey

Thanks! Renewal is next week, so won't be impacted by those I don't think

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 724 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

Awh very good, benefit access 500 is €1,183.

A few plans I’d look at with ILH (inclusive of 5% discount on https://www.totalhealthcover.ie/health-insurance-quote)

    1. My plan 500 €1.034.04
    2. My plan 350 €1,087.37
    3. My plan 500 day to day €1,089.12

I would say all of these better value, you either get premium saving or extra cover. Only exception is orthopaedic co payment increases €500 on all of them but at 39 that shouldn’t be a concern.
