This is a great thread and has come along just at the right time for me. I've been looking ay the HIA website for the past 2 weeks but am still undecided. Thanks to Ruddy1987 for all the input.

I'm looking for plans for YA aged 22 & 24. The PMI plans you mention here look great but increase hugely after age 26. Any suggestions for something starting at around €750 PA rising to no more than €1,000 at age 26? I'd say everyday health expenses, MRIs etc & hospital room & type are the most important (maybe not achievable in the price range I mentioned).

Once 26 you are on full adult cover.

First cover from Irish Life can be gotten for €500 and that covers public hospitals only. MRI scan cover can be obtained but not any level of cover for day to day items. Actually €492 with small discount on link below.

    https://www.totalhealthcover.ie/health-insurance-quote

This will suit young people who just want to keep cover up and are happy with Public hospitals.

if looking at more mid level you are looking at enchances care with VHI , Plan B with Level, Health Action 1 with ILH but you will be spending c€1150-€1300.

    Thanks Ruddy

I think I'll go with the Level Plan B with day-to-day benefits. It starts @ about €684 for the 22 year old and rises to €1,225 @ 26.

    Thanks Ruddy1987,

The renewal date is 1 Jan, the issue I have is that I pay for it through my employer's group scheme and they renew on the 1st of Jan every year so I don't think I can change the date unless I choose to pay for it privately. We get 10% off from Laya through the group scheme so I'd lose that if I pay for it outside of work. If it saved me money it might be worth doing, or looking at other plans from other providers.

My mam doesn't have any issues with her knees or hips at present. I just kept them both on the same plan because of their age and the usual what if but the cost is making it hard to justify that what if now. It was different when it was only a few hundred more but it's now €600+ more expensive.

If I have to stick to Jan 1, what plans do you suggest I look at. If I have to drop the full orthopedic cover I will, at least for my mam.

Actually, it's fine, I see you discussed HealthGuide2 on the previous page. Thanks.

if your in a group scheme there might be a waiting period waiver with Laya for upgrades for specific orthopaedic procedures. Again a good adviser will get that for the company on decent size scheme.

For your mother you could look at the likes of inspire, inspire care (cheaper version of Inspire).

I’d be keeping your father on prosper advanced if he wants to keep his full Ortho cover and good day to day.

    Hi Ruddy,

Have 2 adults on Laya Inspire and 2 teens on Essential Family Connect. Any other options I should look at? Thanks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

Inspire is still a good plan, you could look at Inspire care for premium saving. Its €1,570 versus €1,642 for Inspire. If open to a move of insurer HealthGuide 2 at €1,679 (inclusive of 5% discount available here) attractive with improved hospital cover. HIA comparison via link below

Essential family connect is not good value at all! Inspire Plus much better cover and cheaper for kids at €382. If you look at Irish life I would be looking at Health Plan 16.1 for the kids at €427. HIA link below:

    Hi Ruddy,

thanks for all your advice, on this thread.

It is very difficult, if not impossible, to get any information on what drugs/treatments each health insurer covers on their various plans. I'm thinking specifically of treatments approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), but not approved by the HSE. This area is a major concern for us and, I imagine, should be for most people.

A friend of ours recently spent a six figure sum on cancer drugs, recommended by his consultant. This was despite being insured, via work, on a mid-tier VHI Plan. Luckily he could, just about, afford it and is now in remission. The only response I got, when I enquired, was that this area was considered on a case by case basis.

Have you any views, or better still information, on this area.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

This is an area where clarity is difficult to find. My view is that VHI typically would be “the best” insurer for such instance but it’s complex.

Ultimately the other two insurers are commercial entities while VHI has a more member focused approach. In saying that Irish life health massively improved coverage specifically in area of cancer drugs. However until you are in the middle of it and have gone through the approval processes it’s hard to say which is a standout provider as different situations are treated differently by the insurers. Long way of saying no clear cut answer.

Thanks for the advice Ruddy1987, I'll check out those plans you mentioned.

Are the Inspire plans a good alternative to Connect Choice for me too? I want a decent amount of cover in Dublin hospitals, good day to day cover for GPs, Routine Dentist visits, Consultants, MRI and Xrays etc. What's really putting me off staying with Connect Choice is the increase to a 40% shortfall for orthopedic procedures. I know I'm not likely to need it but 40% is excessive on the off chance that I do.

Ruddy, I moved to vhi company plan but I've been meaning to move to an alternative plan.

i will take a look at PMI 43 16 and PMI 53 10. Any other suggestions? Let's say 2 adults 2kids for example.

Ruddy, I've been on Simplicity by Laya for the past few years as I have had complex medical care needs. Is there anything better out there that would give similar cover for hospitals, a private room in a private hospital and cover for consultants and scans/outpatient testing? I don't care about joint replacement, maternity, fertility, alternative medicine cover.

Any help very very gratefully received.

If you don’t need cover for orthopaedics you shouldn’t be on Simplicity. You can get much better cover for your outpatient stuff for c€600+ on any of the following plans

    •Connect Simplicity

    • Optiimum Premium

    • Health Guide 3 (Irish Life Health with 5% off via link in other posts)

Are there any plans out there that provide discounts for excluding maternity cover and kids etc?

Single, mid 40's, no kids, no maternity required.

Just on this, I can't change as I paid this policy upfront whereas for the renewal I will need to do it monthly. So they tell me I can only do that from renewal. Factoring this in and the changes to Connect Choice on Jan 1st, would there be another alternative?

    Thanks

Laya Healthcare, one of Ireland's leading private health insurers, recorded pre-tax profits of €19.02m in 2024, more than doubling from €9.13m the previous year. Revenue rose by 2.5 per cent to €103.39m, supported by multiple premium adjustments across the year.

Gonna need to change the laws around these companies. Make them non profit or something.

VHI just told me pmi 43 16 is going up to 1800 from 1st jan so 5310 seems cheaper option at 1600!

What company is this with? I can only speak of my experience with Laya but you simply purchase a new policy online, setting the start date as 31st December. Doesn't matter if you're paying monthly or all at once.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

The issue with moving from connect choice to inspire if you loose your 75% GP benefit down to 50%. Also your in patient excess would increase to €200.

If you are ok with this and the €1,000 out patient cap inspire is a decent alternative that retains only a 20% ortho shortfall.

PMI 52 10 or PMI 67 10 worth having a look at also depending on your renewal date (pmi 43 16 will go up at end of December )

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

all plans must cover maternity it’s a requirement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 658 ✭✭✭keredern

Hi Ruddy, we've just renewed with LH plan B 300 excess paying €261 monthly.

    Couple age 59 & 60 44% & 46% LCR

Cardiac cover vital but still have 4 years to serve for cover.

    No other health issues.

Is there better value to be had with any other provider?

This is our 2nd year of private health insurance.

Thank you for all your advice & information. I 😊

I'm mid 40s and have PMI45 10, paid around €1650, I find the level of cover good and has some very good cardiac cover too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 618 ✭✭✭ruddy1987

it’s a good value plan and I wouldn’t be recommending a change, specially when you have such large loadings. Main issue for some is that it doesn’t have any high tech cardiac cover (blackrock clinic or mater private). These are best hospitals in the country.

if you didn’t have the loadings I’d consider upgrading spend in the future to something like health action 1 to get that cover for hi tech. But for now I wouldn’t recommend any change.

    Hi Ruddy,

My mother-in-law is 90. She's been on Laya Momentum this year. Due for renewal Jan 1st.
Any recommendations for something with similar or better coverage?

Obviously, at her age, a quality plan is the primary focus.

    Much obliged.

This is a really interesting and helpful thread, Ruddy, thanks.

My renewal is next week. Mid 40s couple on Laya Signify (subject to 12% loading) and YA and child on VHI Firstcare 500 Day to Day. Any opinions on these policies? I'd consider paying slightly more for my own but I like the €1 excess and get a little back on an annual GP and consultant visit and twice yearly hygienist. Thanks.

Hi Ruddy, Couple mid & early 70's been on VHI PMI 2410 for past year & on PMI 3613 prior to that. Due for renewal mid Dec at a cost of €4205.38 (an increase of 15.93%) for PMI 2410. Any similar plans that come in cheaper.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 483 ✭✭the goon

I rang Laya, was all set to make the change to Connect Choice effective Dec 1st and was told that where moving from payment in full to monthly DD it can only be done from the renewal date.

Ok some main reason you would be on Momentum is for full orthopaedics coverage or access to Semi Private room in Mater Private for all procedures. Its now €3,218.70, so very exensive.

With your mothers in law's age profile its likely that she will not need orthopaedics with risk related to such procedures. So I think having this is not a requirement likely. If it is you would be looking at Prosper advanced (€2,564 from 1st of January).

If you wanted to stay with Laya and save a packet I would be looking at Connect Simplicity for €1,800. It has Private room coverage with a 20% shortfall for ortho. But for a 90 year old should be as much cover as they potentially need (once comfortable with only coverage for specialised items like cardiac in mater Private & Blackrock clinic).
