Actually Canada is fully metric in terms of what measures are used in most aspects of daily life, not sure where the mapmaker got the idea it was mixed usage here. And it is almost 99% non-metric in the USA, I suppose there are businesses that use some metric measurements because they are importing and exporting but in everyday life Americans have little clue what most metric measures mean.

In Canada some older people (like myself) use inches and yards in a few areas of conversation and most golf courses in Canada do not show a metric guide so I guess there's one part of life that is mixed, but there is never any reference to gallons, quarts or pints except when older housewives try to convert them to metric from cookbooks.

Metric conversion took place in Canada in the 1970s so it's not like the mapmaker missed a recent development. Anyone under fifty in Canada has no idea what most so-called Imperial measures would be like, even the term mile is probably only vaguely understood by younger people. I find that I convert a lot of things back and forth because I have to deal with Americans on weather forums a lot of my time on the internet, and we used to travel quite often across the border. That leads me to the other mistake on a map, China is not the most hated country in Canada and probably never has been, there's a bit of a cult of admiration of Chinese communism among Canadian elites (not a member), prior to 2024 I would say no particular nation was very much hated in Canada since most of the world has no clue we are here and so there were no real points of contention. Russia was becoming disliked once again mostly by elites jumping to the command to be as European as possible when you're not European (one wonders why bother then since Europe seems to have no ban on immigration and surely it makes sense to live in Europe if one really wants to be European). The average person in Canada nowadays would answer USA to the question of most hated nation, whatever Trump's reasons may be for his actions (it seems to be largely rooted in concerns about the free flow of drugs and fentanyl across borders) people in Canada have felt blind-sided by a sudden change in attitude although since I deal with Americans a lot I knew it was there in the background, and there are some points that represent blind spots on both sides.

So I would not characterize Canada as being an anti-Chinese hot spot nor a metric holdout. But hey what do I know, I just live here, the mapmaker probably never visited Canada but Knows A Lot.

Images taken in high resolution from orbit of the openings of caves beneath the surface of Mars by the NASA Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Space scientists believe that these caves, formed probably by lava flows via underground tunnels, are ideal sites for human settlement due to intense solar UV shielding.

Of course, someone whose great, great, great grandfather was German could count as "of German origin".

This type of map is entirely useless without an exact date for the data shown on it.

Nope. Humans venturing into caves on other planets never works out well.

    …Dons mod hat…

Can we please keep this thread about maps and maps only?

I started this thread over six years ago and it's great that it is still going strong - but we must keep the posts about maps and not images of other things and other distractions.

Look at the curved black dotted line that runs down the middle of the Aegean Sea, and the continuous red line well to the east of it.

Greece claims that everything west of the red line is part of Greece's exclusive economic zone. Turkey maintains that Greece's EEZ should extend only to the dotted line, and everything east of that is part of Turkey's EEZ. That's the main dispute.

Separately, Greece claims that it's territorial waters should extend for 12 nautical miles off its coasts (including the coasts of its many islands). The UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, to which Greece is a party, sets 12 nm as the standard limit for territorial waters. Turkey is not a party to UNCLOS, only claims 6nm of territorial waters itself, and will only recognise 6nm of terrritorial waters for Greece.

There are some disputes about airspace as well, plus Turkey disputes Greek claims to sovereignty over some uninhabited or seasonally inhabited islands.
