That "documentary" last night was out and out tabloid crap. I'm sure those part taking didn't know how it would be sliced and diced but they come across very poorly and it was a poor choice for the two councillors in particular knowing how the media can cut things up anyway they like. Why the councillors felt they were authorities on DJ, enough to make an appearance on that programme shows very poor judgement in my opinion. The "journalist & author" really has the bit between her teeth and it's not a good look. Really poor programming from RTE.

What DJ did was disgusting and he is where he belongs and what came out at the trial is only the tip of the iceberg by all accounts. However the personal stuff is not called for and if they think it informs his motives for his later behaviour it's incredibly poorly framed and comes across as total smear campaign.

The only thing I took from that program last night was reminding me how great he was on the field. It's a long time since I saw that many clips of him playing. It brought me back to being on the canal end in 92 and 93. The rest of the programme was bottom feeding muck.

DJ is being punished for his crimes and I have no problem with the likes of the Primetime programme highlighting what he did. When you're in the public eye and you do wrong, expect to be hauled over the coals and I'd have no sympathy for him. Last night was terrible for his family who had no part in his crimes. To have some of the shitest times in their lives be paraded in front of the whole country for no reason but to smear a man who's already convicted is very poorly judged.

If they wanted to make the case that DJ's behaviour post 2000 started to change and it had an influence on his later crimes then they chose a really bad way of telling that story.

speaking as a big GAA man and very involved in GAA in my locality moreso football but I absolutely love hurling and I worshipped the ground DJ walked on - for many a long year, until recent revelations let’s say …

I found the intrusion into his private life a bit unsavoury but it needs to be out there and in public.

He did so much damage and was such a “two faced rat” over the years - for example the Thai girl he brought over to work as a so-called au pair - I think we all know the subtext of what was going on there - the wife didn’t tolerate it.

Maybe the Thai was involved in some element of DJ various scams he had running? It might trigger a victim of his to come forward.

i was Dj number 1 fan for many years. So for me to say this is a turn up for the books.

Of course never nice to see it all down and dirty laid out like dirty underwear but RTÉ have good reasons.

That’s my 2 cents on it.

What would those good reasons be? Absolute horseshite.

As stated above what sticks out most about DJ from the Documentary was his unbelievable ability at such a young age, the clips of him catching high ball at such a young age in the inside forward line created such an advantage, rarely seen underage nowadays, the side step, striking off his left and right, he had no problem working hard and getting stuck in either. He was way ahead of his time. The rest of it was a waste of time and an invasion of privacy to family members.

They've been in Dublin a good few years so negotiations could still be ongoing 😅

Has anyone heard anything about how this went?

John was a fair "agricultural" hurler back in the day…

Who is this Seamus O'Connor fella on the Dodger programme and what's his business being on it for?

Have never heard of him but apparently has worked with Limerick goalies over the past few years, so should be a decent addition.

I have watched both episodes of the DJ documentary and I found the whole lot a bit strange and if the author of the book thinks it would sell her more books I think she will be disappointed and I ended up feeling sorry for DJ in the end. I dont know what both episodes were trying to achieve. I know he did wrong and he deserves to be where he is and he should not have used having cancer to get money from those people especially anyone that had cancer or was in their family. However his family should have not being brought into it or anything to do with the au pair. The author also made a huge mistake about the death of one of his brothers which showed her lack of research on the family. I thought his former teacher spoke very well and he said it in the end that DJ had a addiction and DJ made huge mistakes but so have many people before him. He was the only contributor that spoke sense of the whole situation. Its all very sad especially after watchin the clips showing what a player he was and the memories of all the great times he gave us over so many years.

What is the second part of the dj documentary people are talking about ?

Surely there was enough in the first part. Why are RTÉ going to town so much on DJ?

he did wrong yes and he is in prison. I understand the public interest. The book is sold out in newbridge Easons for example.

but Why the need to drag this all out?

Because he conned a rich man... an influential rich man.... That was Djs mistake....

Like , if he only conned his neighbour over a Sliothar company , he would have been ok to manage an inter county Senior Camogie team .....

Look at Darren Gleeson as well, clean as a whistle after what he did, career in inter county Management and everything, no bother to him.

Its up on the RTE player and there is nothing new in it. Its the author of the book that is pushing all this and apparently she is on two programmes tonight on Virgin promoting the book again. Sales must be slow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,250 ✭✭✭newhouse87

Gleeson did repay all in full with interest. Totally wrong what he did but not in the same league as dj.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,473 ✭✭✭Marrooned

Will the author be giving all the proceeds to a cancer charity?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,118 ✭✭✭AdrianG08

Love to see someone ask her. Or will she use the funds to reimburse people DJ conned out of money? Will she feck.

I'd give her credit if she was an investigative journo who blew the lid on this scandal, but she didn't, she's an expert after the fact. And a crap one at that.

Was he heavily involved in supporters club back then I think?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,109 ✭✭✭conor05

Produced a top class hurler in his son Rory though

Super post. If the so called author cared so much about his victims why doesn't she give them the profits from the book?

I think theres definitely something in it anyway. It was winning awards before and we all remember the way the way it was left after the concert and that was the summer and before a underage all ireland. It was embarrassing at the time. The pitch was absolutely scandalous last wknd and would i be right in saying wexford park looked in far better condition? I take into account the weather and the over use of it due to lack of pitches but thats for another day and has being well published here about the failure of our county board to have a proper center of excellence not like the dump.Under 21 final could easily be played in callan and times during the year matches could of being played in club grounds and would have served up a better atmosphere. Timmy holihan will have to be a big improvement on michael rice as goal keeping coach but how did it take derek 4 years to acknowledge a proper goalkeeping coach was needed?it will probably be hard teach old dog new tricks because we all know scruff doesnt like them but are management brave enough to make big changes?i have my doubts. I think any work on short puckouts was met by resistance by a few players. We know owen wall, zach and billy drennan aren't part of the panel for next year. Billy and zach didnt accept the invitation. I know a fringe player who has seen very little gametime over the last few years also told derek he wasnt going back in but after a meeting and a promise to be shown more game time he went back in. I presume he is going to be tried in a different position. It seems loads of players were called in and some might benefit in the long term but unlikely to see any gametime this year, rory glynn,James walsh kilmacow, sean hunt, joe healy, anthony ireland.paddy langton, michael brennan, rory glynn, david barcoe theres loads more. Mikey carey seems to be the talk of going into full back but podge moylan will also deserve his chance. Anyone know why daragh corcoran played wing back last wknd? Maybe its something to do with the injury? It should be a good final. Shamrocks as we know arent the team they once were but are still very hard to beat. Adrian will obviously be huge but paddy should be back. He got stamped on when he came onto the pitch without boots during that schmoozel at the end against kk.
