I think it was 30 went to 34 a month, my contract was Nov to Nov

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,133 ✭✭✭feargantae

The price increase can apply during the contract too, but you've the option to leave. In April this year only the 500Mb went up in price from €30 to €34. The 1Gb didn't increase and stayed at €35.

Sky have since increased their 1Gb price to €37 but 500Mb remains €30.

Can someone explain to me how Eir works with NBI - Looking at signing up for the 24 month 29.99/month deal 500Mb. I realise there is a 4e increase in April each year. I had the line and the ONT put in when I tried Virgin media(cancelled after 14 days as they failed to activate my router) - so if I go with the current Eir deal will they have to put a whole new line in all the way from the road for their own ONT - also which router are they using these days for the 500Mb

No they'll use your NBI fibre as long as OpenEir is not available to you, you can check here -

    https://www.comreg.ie/broadbandchecker/

    The router is an Eir F3500 which is a Sagemcom F@st 5359 - https://wikidevi.wi-cat.ru/Sagemcom_F%40ST_5359

You can replace it with your own router, just connect directly to the ONT. IPoE/Dynamic IP/DHCP as the connection type and VLAN ID 10 IN VLAN/IPTV settings.

As always you are a great help!! No openeir, so that's good news about using the cable and ONT that is already there. Is Eir a good choice? Just trying to stay away from Sky and virgin messed me around so much. Apprecciate your input, thanks!

Yeah I've found Eir's support and complaints team good in recent times. Digiweb and Pure Telecom would be good choices also as they are Irish companies with call centres based in Ireland.

I was going for Pure, but they don't do 500Mb at my address apparently, only 1Gb - trying to save my pennies!

Eir were the same until recently, offering 500Mb didn't seem to make financial sense for some of them when using NBI. But Eir do now offer it.

Im with Pure on NBI and have 500mbs service - unless something has changed very recently.

Thinking about going with Eir next year myself for the 2Gbs service. Contracts up at end of March, so I'll hold a month to minimise the annual increase given its a 2 yr contract

I will have to ring them, if I try and sign up online with my eircode the only option that comes up is 1GB

I am currently with virgin for their 1GB Fiber and just out of the contract.

Signed up to Eir Fibre 5Gb for €50 month for 24 months and had the installation done last week.

So over the past week I’ve been testing the speed by switching the wifi connection on my laptop and consistently getting higher speed with the Eir Fibre service.

As a result, I called Virgin to cancel my service and give the 30 days notice but the agent told me that I will regret moving to Eir. Because Eir would boost my speed during the first month so that I will get a much higher speed then what it should be in reality (as in after the testing period). Also told me that I actually have a what’s called partial fiber line which is shared between all my neighbours who use this infrastructure. So in reality, my internet speed could be as low as 59mb. He strongly suggest that I do my research and ring back.

He has offered me half price for 6 month and full price (€40) for the rest 6 month (€80) if I would like to stay.

I understand he has to try to convince me not to cancel but this practice sounds a bit fishy.

Has anyone any experience with the Eir Fiber service and is there any truth in this?

No don't believe what that agent has said. There's been a few posts on Boards over the last while saying very similar to yourself about Virgin staff saying this. Virgin is also shared, that's how XGS-PON broadband works. It's not partial fibre, it's FTTP, the same as Virgin. You usually get the advertised speed regardless of the provider, but it can slow down a bit at peak times.

The only thing about the 5Gb, you'll need to have a device capable of 5Gb, a 10Gb NIC etc. WiFi will still be similar unless you have a device that can connect to 6GHz. A WiFi 6 device using 5GHz will get about 800Mb/s, a WiFi 7 device using 6GHz might get around 1.7Gb/s.

And most of your devices don't need anything more than a solid 50-100. A decent 500Mb connection to a house and a third party wifi6 setup is all that is needed even if you are streaming 4k across 4 devices simultaneously unless you are a huge data processor for work or uploader.

Is there any benefit in going for the Eir 5GB/Wifi7 package in terms of getting better wifi speeds upstairs and around the house?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,225 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

I'd focus on your wifi system and investing in that. I had a mesh wifi5 system and it struggled at getting more than 20-30 in some areas which caused issues on video calls. I then put in a wifi6 system using 4 fritz units I got from CEX and it's like night and day, now I get 100-200 everywhere. I only have 500 coming to the house and it's more than sufficient.

If you can't get wired access points around the house, then getting some form of "mesh system" would make more of an improvement rather than just one router.

    Hi all,

Is this 24 month offer still available or how would I get it?

And is there a home phone line included?

I can only see a 12 month offer on Eir's own website.

Currently with Vodafone for home phone and 500mb broadband and out of contract in mid-December.

'Renewal offers' from Vodafone have not been good so looking to move.

-renewal is very similar to what I'm currently paying so I see no point in locking into another 12 or 24 month contract if is a much better offer available with Eir or others .

In a rural area, I don't think Sky and Virgin are options. And need a home phone.

Without going into details, Wifi 7 is technically very, very different (and more complicated) to Wifi 6/6E and is only early days in terms of adoption and uptake. Telco's like Eir are pushing it for marketing, but in reality unless you have a few devices running Wifi 7, you wont be able to take advantage of these network features anyway.

Ive been recommending to friends and family that if they have a solid, reliable Wifi 6 setup, stick with that as it will be stable and will serve them very well for quite a few years to come, especially if you only have a 1Gbs/500Mbs connection.

Went with Pure Telecom as they appeared to get decent enough reviews. Shambolic so far, and customer service has been awful.

Well finally bit the bullet, rang Pure and they do indeed to 500mb at my address on the NBI network so signed up today. I asked what modem I will get and was told a Huawei.

Anyone have this modem, any good? Or do I need to purchase something else/better? As someone who is a bit technically challenged I am hoping I can make do with the huawei to set up my deco mesh system. Was previously using a 5G sim in a huawei router on the 3 hero plan, 15e/month - still happy with that, but said I would see is the fibre a better job. I have a 14day cooling off period.

You don't need to connect it, you can connect your Deco directly to the ONT. Set connection type as PPPoE and set VLAN ID 10 in VLAN/IPTV settings.

    PPPoE Username - puretelecom@puretel.ie

    PPPoE Password - broadband1

How have people found managing the switch over between providers - ensuring no down time and no early termination fee if you switch before contract end date.

Doing it exactly on contract end date?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,225 ✭✭✭✭TheDriver

I'm a siro switcher and I always do it 1 day after contract end to avoid any issues. I end up paying 1 week of full price but c'est la vie.

Downtime, don't even notice. Unless it's virgin, they all use same login type so I don't even change modem

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,768 ✭✭✭NotShero

It depends if there is multiple access networks available to you, if theres only one then you just give your UAN/SIRO Acc No/NBI Line ID and you just get the new router sent out to connect. The old provider will stop and get cancelled. You still have to ensure you are outside the contract term when switching to avoid early cease charges.

Things get a bit more complicated when there's more than one access network available to you, you'd need to confirm that the new provider is going to use the same one you are currently using for the simplest switchover.

You can check which access networks are available to you here -

Vodafone 1Gb & 2Gb packages now include their new Ultra Hub 7 router with WiFi 7

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,841 ✭✭✭shineon23

My contract is up in mid-December.

Can I contact Eir now/in advance and specify a start date for the change over to occur mid-December?

    As in, to minimise downtime.

if they'd post out new modern etc. To have it in my possession, and I could then set it up/complete the switch after i am out of my contract?

Otherwise I'm presuming waiting until I am out of contract and then completing the switch is the way to go.

Just hoping the offer I see now is still available then.

I know you got sorted with Pure but I really without recommend anyone going with 500Mb NBI with eir as there is a €100 activation fee which brings the average monthly cost to around €38.33. 1Gb is available for €40! Or €45 if you're on the old eircom system. Or 2Gb for €50.

The offer from eir is available until 1/Dec. It could be extended again but that's the date we've been told. A landline is included with off peak landline calls between 7pm-7am+weekends. You can add anytime calls for €9.99 extra.

If you can see specific offers online go into your local store and the staff should be able to help you out.

I'm a salesman myself so I can understand wanting to make your commission but Jaysus that fella couldn't have told you bigger lies! The fibre is shared, but so is Virgin's! That's just the nature of the technology. It's still proper fibre straight into your home (FTTP). It wouldn't ever reach as low as 59Mb unless there was some serious fault along the line. There's no speed boosting or throttling. If you go with the 5Gb and have the devices to support it then that's the speed you'll get. Of course you mightnt have the proper setup but even with WiFi 6/6e devices you'll get great speeds and reliability.
