muddy or just not loud enough ? Muddy i would blame on the sound engineer (probably!)

Bit of both I guess. I find thats the case with a lot of louder type gigs there. Same for Rage Against the Machine, AC/DC.

I've mislaid my earplugs, will they be handing them out on Saturday?

Yours, an increasingly risk averse, old fart.

They handed out foam ones on Wednesday anyway

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,586 ✭✭✭fourmations

they were just the cheapest of cheap orange foam yokes, i only stuck them in for the YMMR noise bit which was thankfully only a couple of minutes and not the usual 20/30 mins, you can get them in a pound shop, the stadium was definately loud but i found it perfect, it was amusing, when they came on stage all you could hear was the crinkling of the plug wrappers before they started, a hack version would be cotton wool or jacks roll with a bit of chapstick / vaseline, i cant see it being as loud in the 3, i'm sure they have their own volume limits in place?

The foam ones really are no use, they'll just block the sound, and will actually encourage people to pull them out cos they won't be enjoying the sound, and therefore risk damaging their hearing.

It might be too late for many but it's worth picking up the ones that are designed for music or loud sounds - I have ones called Vibes which I use regularly, both for gigs and for band rehearsals. I once played a venue that had a decibel monitor and at one point we were hitting 100db but with the Vibes in my ears was totally fine. Same for any loud gig I've ever gone to.

They cut the high frequencies and balance out the sound, so you get a natural sound but with a reduction of the harm-causing frequencies. If you can pick up a pair of them or something similar in the next day or too, then defo do.

Saying that, I don't think the 3Arena is going to be all that loud. They won't suddenly change their levels to suit MBV. Either way, I would strongly advise all attending to wear SOME kind of ear protection.

Yep, i had the foam ones and took them out as i didn't like the sound. Had looked in to ordering some proper ones but i wouldn't have received them until next week so left it.

With regards to You Made Me Realise they don't do the 20 minute noise section anymore afaik. I'm certain i read an interview with Kevin years back where he decided to curtail it as the whole gig had become about that moment and a bit gimmicky. I could well be imagining that though!

far from scientific but my mate has an app on his phone, it was clocking MBV at the stadium at 102db from the back right hand side of the standing area, does that sound right to anyone who knows about this sort of thing?

Music Minds two doors away from The Grand Social do as well - I've gone in picking up bits for my guitars and bands playing the GS are there dropping in for strings or whatever. It's a much better value for money shop than MM.

I'll be honest and say I was slightly worried after Wednesday. Glad to say that was misplaced, **** ME what a gig

Genius move having the extra seating from a sound point of view, it balanced the sound better.

Amazing gig, I love a good intro but mbv just walking on and blasting off beats them all 😀

It took a while to get going but once it hit lift off it was amazing. I could have listened to that wall of noise at the end for another 30 minutes. It reminded me an Aphex Twin assault on his audience.

What lovely people went to both of those gigs. Some of the most polite crowds I have ever been in.

That was a good 'un. Slightest of midset lulls perhaps and some tech issues on Wonder 2? Minor quibbles. Thought the volume was just right, took a notable jump for Soon (same in National Stadium). Much better than Wednesday, pulled it out of the bag.

Is there a lot of guitar backing tracks? On Wonder 2, even though Colm and Debbie were both playing guitar i couldn't make out what it was they were playing. Off Your Face was Kevin on an acoustic and no other guitars yet there was a whole load of noise going on.

Nice that they dedicated the set to Mani.

Mates of mine with seat tickets walked into standing no problem. What's the capacity of the venue in that configuration? Personally, for someone who only seems to go there once every 5 years at best, i find it very easy to get lost in!

Oh yeah, and Maria Somerville was very good. Much better than i was expecting. Will probably go to her Whelans gig now.
