As the poster themselves say, "you can draw your own conclusions"

Seems like the team will be

Porter, Sheehan, Furlong, Beirne, Ryan, Baird, Doris, Van der Flier

JGP, Prendergast, Lowe, Aki, Ringrose, O'Brien, Hansen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,294 ✭✭✭Former Former Former

Even at centre, McCloskey has (apparently) overtaken Aki and Henshaw at 12. He's not young but he's playing very well and could well be an option come the RWC. And of course we capped another new guy in the centre in this series.

In the back-row, we've seen Baird emerge as the (hopefully) long-term six, he's probably been our best player in this series.

We will always have gradual evolution rather than sweeping changes, that doesn't mean change isn't happening.

    Bench? My guess:

McCarthy, Kelleher, Clarkson, Conan, Timoney, Casey, Crowley, Farrell

I'd rather Prendergast ahead of Timoney though

Against England last week, New Zealand only started 7 players from the 1/4 final. More than half the team is different.

Indeed, we can conclude Crowley was absolutely rubbish against NZ and significantly worse than SP against Japan and Aus.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,342 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

Crowley was good when he came on vs Aus. Not as good as Prendergast had been, but he performed well.

Now, if you want to frame that as "significantly worse", we can indeed draw our own conclusions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,342 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

To be fair to Farrell, I think we're seeing more change in this set of AI's than we did this time last year, and that's a positive thing (where last year I thought he was far too conservative).

Their team is considerably worse than 2023 though. So mass change is not necessarily good

too many japenese based players. we'll walk this easy !!!

Mad that 9 of their 23 are based in Japan. You'd think it would affect their game, not playing to the higher standard of the URC on a consistent basis.

It suits them very well - the Japanese season only starts in December and ends in June, so even guys like Malcolm Marx, who played a relatively full season last year domestically, hasn't had any club games since June.

Pieter Steph du Toit hasn't played a domestic game since 5th May 2024 (566 days by the time the game kicks off on Saturday).

TBF most of the others played relatively full schedules in Japan, but it almost certainly isn't taking as much of a toll on their bodies as playing Top14 or URC would.

Nothing to be overly worried about in that team. SFM is the biggest concern, he is absolutely dynamite, arguably the best OH in the game currently.

The Springbok players always just raise their game when playing for SA.

Even when they're based in Europe they have a habit of phoning it in a bit for their club.

    14. Tommy O’Brien (Blackrock College/Leinster)(5)
    13. Garry Ringrose (UCD/Leinster)(68)
    12. Bundee Aki (Galwegians/Connacht)(67)
    11. James Lowe (Leinster)(42)
    10. Sam Prendergast (Lansdowne/Leinster)(12)
    9. Jamison Gibson-Park (Leinster)(45)

    1. Andrew Porter (UCD/Leinster)(78)
    2. Dan Sheehan (Lansdowne/Leinster)(34)
    3. Tadhg Furlong (Clontarf/Leinster)(81)
    4. James Ryan (UCD/Leinster)(75)
    5. Tadhg Beirne (Lansdowne/Munster)(64)
    6. Ryan Baird (Dublin University/Leinster)(32)
    7. Josh van der Flier (UCD/Leinster)(74)
    8. Caelan Doris (St Mary’s College/Leinster)(54)(captain)

    Replacements:

    16. Rónan Kelleher (Lansdowne/Leinster)(42)
    17. Paddy McCarthy (Dublin University/Leinster)(3)
    18. Finlay Bealham (Corinthians/Connacht)(53)
    19. Cian Prendergast (UCD/Connacht)(7)
    20. Jack Conan (Old Belvedere/Leinster)(54)

    22. Jack Crowley (Cork Constitution/Munster)(29)

Ringrose and JVDF return. Big decision is Tom Farrell in the 23 shirt, and Cian Prendergast stays in the 23 ahead of Henderson.

    Yeah, this is it really.

I really dislike Rassie and the way he operates, but it's impossible not to respect just how good he is at his job. He is world class at connecting with his players, getting the best out of them and generally motivating them. Their mental strength is off the charts.

  • Administrators Posts: 55,812 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Not having a lock on the bench and yet again picking a centre at 23 is clearly a gamble. Not delighted with having Baird cover lock against the Boks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,342 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

In the event of Aki getting injured, I wonder who'd cover 12; you'd presumably have an option of Farrell, Ringrose or Crowley. I wonder if we could see the latter there.

I doubt it - I think it would definitely be Farrell. I'd be much more comfortable with Tom Farrell playing 12 than I would be with the likes of Bundee or Stu McCloskey playing 13.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,168 ✭✭✭✭bilston

I don't get Tom Farrell on the bench at all, other than the fact we know Farrell likes a centre in the 23 jersey. Jimmy O'Brien or Jacob Stockdale make more sense. Who is covering Full Back? Crowley? Who is covering the wing? Ringrose? Either O'Brien or Stockdale would have made a lot more sense.

Didn't know that about PSDT. Anyone else and I'd say their match fitness should be in the gutter, but the man is a machine!

Farrell really doesn't rate JOB at all. Some fall from grave to go from playing well in a WC QF to not even featuring at all in a Nov series.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,879 ✭✭✭FtD v2

He wasn't in the original squad, so it's not that surprising.

I kind of get it to an extent, even though JOB is a player I like and he's very valuable for Leinster. Jimmy is one of those guys who can do a very adequate job in multiple positions (in so many ways ideal bench cover), but he just isn't stellar arguably in any of them.

He's played relatively well for Leinster this season, and I think if he was tearing up trees in Irish squad training he'd have gotten a chance either last week or this week, but I would assume he isn't.

    is Henshaw injured?

He had a poor beginning to the Club season so really he can't complain.

Farrell has made no bones about it in recent weeks, that lads who aren't stepping up in camp and training are in peril, and he showed undisguised irritation about errors and slack performance in the first two fixtures, so it's evident that a very high bar has been set for them across their contributions.

Aki can count himself lucky that he happens to be the third of three options and the other two are hurt. He needs to get his head on straight in a massive way and sort out his discipline on both sides of the ball, because he's been making rookie mistakes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,342 ✭✭✭✭aloooof

I'd imagine your assumptions are correct; Crowley covering FB, and Ringrose (or even JGP in a pinch) covering wing.

As happy as I am for Farrell to pick up his 2nd cap, I think I'd have favoured Stockdale too tbh. But my guess is he's favoured Farrell as a consequence of Aki's poor form.

Would have preferred Clarkson on the bench. Probably would have went with Henshaw at 12 but Aki still has a big game in him. Happy to see Farrell at 23. Prendergasts boot will be important in this game. Worried about him in defence, no doubt Rassie will have as many ball carriers as possible running at him but needs to play these games if he is to keep progressing.
