Graham Nortons show still pulls in 2.9 million live viewers in the UK, with more overseas. I think Kielty's show only pulls in about 600,000 live viewers a show now?

Interestingly, Norton salary is about 2.9 million euro. Kielty is paid much less per viewer than that. Kielty settles for it though as he knows he has no other option and is lucky to get it, as he attracts less viewers now than tubs did in his final season of the late late. At least the BBC are not discriminating against the Irishman born in our Irish Republic, he is doing well for himself. And Norton holidays here and has a holiday home here, Kielty never did, so I would say Norton is more Irish.

No matter how much I dislike RTÉ and TLLS, I think your comparison is not great here.

The UK population is 12 times that of Ireland's yet GN is only 7 times greater than that of TLLS. TLLS is only getting about 400K (when you include +1 and the player, if even).

And you have a problem with Northern Irish people, Mary McAleese server 2 terms as president of this republic, while plenty of Irish broadcaster worked in the UK (I was going to go with Eamonn Andrews but he also commuted between Ireland and UK when on TV).

My issue with PK is who replaces him when he goes, I don't think PK sees this as a longer term gig. Who has RTÉ supported over the years to take his place when he does decide to go?

We should soon have word on if this will be his last season on TLLS or if he has extended his contract.

But Kielty never lived in this state. I do not think he ever even holidayed in this state, let alone has a holiday home here, like Byrne had, like Norton has.

I do not think Kielty looks on it as a long term gig, or he would have moved here. His website is still based in England. Wonder who will be next and if they can revive it. Even Tubrity had better numbers in his final year.

Tubs number where predicated on a number of facts as I see them. The death of a number of well known people in 2019/2020, Covid 19 and his exit all giving him generally good viewers, prior to this his audience numbers were falling.

As for PK he clearly takes an interest in Ireland from a cultural perspective, and he has a home in the north and his wider family continue to still live in the north.

I agree, I don't think Kielty see this as a long term gig (I think his production company has its eyes on the series but not with him as presenter). For RTÉ I think they saw it as a stop gap between Tubs and the next presenter, knowing they'd done little to promote someone to that position, but what have they really done in the last 2 and a half years to find a new host? Ciaran Cuddihy? :/

Patrick Kielty on summer staycations and recharging his batteries https://share.google/mTTHurqyQFlNZNmu0

He has a house in his home place and of course he has holidayed in Ireland.

Whether you're born in Down or Cork you're still Irish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,041 ✭✭✭itsacoolday

In that link , Kielty does not mention any holidays in this state. Tubs always used to mention his many frequent holidays in Co. Galway and his love of the west, and it is well know Gay Byrne had a holiday home in Donegal for most of his life and Grahan Nortan has one in Co. Cork.

Would be interesting to have a female presenter for next season, time mna got a chance rather than stale pale people. And maybe give 3 % of their salary in the form of vouchers for Irish hotels or air bnb, so they have to at least holiday here in the state if they do not live in the state. Put some euro back in to the country, like.

The "State" has nothing to do with anything.

He's an Irishman who lives in London and also has a house in his home place.

Is there even the slightest suggestion that Kielty's job is in jeopardy?

All chat show hosts are only as good as their last show, and Kielty flying in to the state on a Friday and leaving again immediately afterwards is not sustainable when the show has less viewers now than even the last year Tubridy did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,713 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Says who? It's consistently top 5.

You are making up arbitrary points to have a go at him. Where he flies in from has sweet FA to do with anything or 'sustainability'.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,041 ✭✭✭itsacoolday

Wrong. If he had lived or holidayed in this state he might have more understanding of what Irish people , the Irish tv licence payers, want and deserve after the Monday to Friday grind. Plus, commuting by plane is not sustainable due to its high environmental impact, primarily from burning fossil fuels and releasing greenhouse gases and other emissions, which contribute significantly to climate change.

He never paid a rte licence fee in his life but expects the rest of us to for his jet set environmentally unfriendly lifestyle?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,180 ✭✭✭RoTelly

No, I think the point I am making, is that Kielty was given a 3 year contract and it seemed to be a one off, now that could have changed, we should know at some point if he will take another 3 year contract with RTÉ for TLLS.

TLLS is due to be moved to an indo producer, I think its likely that Keilty's company is negotiating for that contract.

I wouldn't be surprised if they get it and that Cuddihy gets the job to present the show.

So we get it you think Keilty is not Irish because he is from the 6 counties, and he doesn't spend enough time on the other side of the boarder.

As for the mna getting a chance to present rather than stale pale people (I think you mean males, but are you excluding trans males?), your going from being ultra conservate FG anti-Norther Ireland patriotist to over the top woke Soc Dem anti-white privilege cultural warrior!

Do you think Tubs should return to the role?

At least Tubs holidayed in the state, paid an Irish tv licence and had some idea of what it's like to live in the state, so he could emphatize with many ordinary licence payers. I could'nt care less if you think Tubs was "a partitionist" or not., because only sf supporters and their hangers on use devisive words like partitionists.

Never though I'd say it, but bring back Tubs. He was far from perfect but better than Kielty. Even if you claim claim Tubs is a partitionist. Nothing wrong with being a partitionist, everyone except sf supporters are probably partitionists according to you.

As Tub's is from a FF family (on both sides) I doubt that he is a partitionist, but the thought never entered my head to be honest.

And your assuming that I am an SF supporter for using such a word that I assume a FF supporter would use it against FG, but then you didn't get I was juxtaposing you stance on PK with who should be the next presenter in an ironic fashion, hence the choice of words. (Partionist V Woke, FG V Soc Dem and on).

So the time is right for RT to return?

    😁😁

So without a single piece of evidence you are setting yourself up as a spokesperson for the people?

The Irish people are keeping this show consistently in the top 5 viewed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,041 ✭✭✭itsacoolday

The evidence for the poor performance is that it has slipped even lower than Tubridy's last year doing the job.

At least Tubs put some euro back in to the Irish economy: he lived here, bought a tv licence, holidayed in the state and promoted how great the west of Ireland was to holiday in. He talked the talk, walked the walk although was far from perfect.

At prime time slot on a Friday night and with the budget and legacy behind it, ithe L.L.S. should be performing better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,713 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

    Gay Byrne is dead.
    Tubs is gone.

    Get over the above.

Now can you show anything of substance that show Kielty's job is in doubt?

You can't. So stop making stuff up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,180 ✭✭✭RoTelly

I think it should be performing slight better but under the current media landscape it is doing fairly alright. I think tubs got out at the right time. But the whole idea that the show should not be presented by someone from northern Ireland, who is clearly an Irish nationalist and views himself as such, is not really an argument, as I say you are ruling out Mary McAleese as President of this "state" for the same reason.

Your suggesting that Virgin Radio should not have Tubs on UK radio because before he got the job he'd only ever lived in Ireland etc etc.

I did not say it should not be presented by someone from N.Ireland, not even if it is by a S.F. supporting nationalist. I said it should be presented by someone who has lived or holidayed in the jurisdiction, ideally by someone who has been on the other end of the stick and paid for a tv licence here.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,713 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

Irish people move around the island for work and shockingly commute to the UK in large numbers for work. Have done and always did.

To take a spite against one is odd.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,041 ✭✭✭itsacoolday

Is it not odd he he flies in once a week and leaves the state immediately afterwards? He has never holidayed in the state? Norton does every year in Cork, Byrne did every year in Donegal, Tubs does every year in Galway.

Kielty thinks he can empathize with the ordinary tv licence payers here but he or his family has never even had an Irish tv licence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 78,713 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

No, nothing odd about it. !000's of people fly both ways for work here.

His job does not require him to 'emphatise' with anyone in particular. It is to present a light entertainment/topical TV programme.
It also does not require that he has a TV licence.

Stop embarrassing yourself trying to find sticks to beat him with. He'll do his stint, and either stay on or go somewhere else for work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,180 ✭✭✭RoTelly

Keilty is an SDLP supporter if anything. I argue he's very far from SF in political allegiance, he could potential be Alliance.

Keilty would have been often down to the Republic when playing for his Club GAA team, while he's toured the Republic as a comedian.

Wonder will one Troy Parrott and his manager be on the guest list this weekend?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,041 ✭✭✭itsacoolday

Will be magical if they are, that is something we can all agree on. It's why people have been tuning in to the Late Late for 60 years or whatever it is, to see national teasurers like our sporting heroes, our world class singers like Christy Moore or U2 etc. To be entertained by that or by comedy, song, dance, debate, life stories or whatever.

So many posts on this thread in the last 48 hours, I thought they’d put the Toy Show on early! 😁
