Could you imagine the maps if the Aviva or Croke Park had as much parking! Would probably make 50,000 people homeless.

The capacity of the Dodgers Stadium is 56,000 and there are 16,000 parking spaces associated with it, covering 130 acres. Parking costs $25-$35 per vehicle, depending on whether you prepay.

In Perth, where I live, we opened a new 60,000-seater stadium a few years back. The stadium is set in parkland, which has not been paved over for parking. There are only 100 public parking spaces; they are only available to people with disability permits. The stadium has its own bus station (stands for for 22 buses) and railway station (4 platforms). All public transport to from games between the stadium and anywhere in the Perth metro region is free — it's included in the ticket price.

    That's how you do it.

to put it in perspective, the rough estimate i got for the footprint of the dodger's stadium, including parking lots, is approx one tenth the size of the phoenix park.

While that is an impressive logistical utopia, there are unintended consequences. When I was growing up in rural Ireland, a big part of the match day excitement was the drive up, parking somewhere near the stadium, eg. Clonliffe for Croke Park, sandwiches and tea from the boot while chatting and joking with other supporters, some of whom you'd meet regularly in the same car park. You don't get that with a no-parking suburban stadium.

I parked at the Allianz last year and was out on the Autobahn in 15 minutes. 11,000 parking spaces and they've designed that stadium with proper access roads, being a greenfield site.

I was at the Bills-Chiefs last Sunday. 74,000 and f-all in the way of public transport. But they embrace it and turn it into a day of tailgating in the lots. Brilliant atmosphere around the stadium as you approach.

I was at the Knicks the week before but took the subway for that :)

I'd prefer if stadia had car parks so that people had a choice whether to drive or take public transport. I'd always take the Dart to Lansdowne/Aviva because it's convenient even if the door to door time is slightly longer. But I wouldn't foist that decision on everyone.

Getting back on topic, here's Optus Stadium in Perth from Google maps. You can see that being a city centre site (former concrete plant riddled with asbestos) there was never an option for large parking lots. But according to Wikipedia they have 1,400 spaces for staff, premium ticket holders and people with disabilities. Is this the same stadium you refer to?

Sarah Baartman was exhibited at a fair in Limerick in 1812. But I suppose we get away with that because we were part of a different jurisdiction at the time :)

Map and artist's rendition of Constantinople (present day Istanbul) circa 1200, when it was the largest city in Europe and the centre of a large trading network between Asia and Europe including the famous Silk Road.

Fascinating electromechanical globe that accurately pinpointed the location in orbit of former Soviet manned Soyuz spacecraft from the 1960s to the 1980s, on board each capsule.

This was pre-digital technology that enabled Soviet cosmonauts to accurately determine their position in orbit.

While we're on stadiums, here's the map for the Bertie Bowl / Stadium Ireland. Most has been built on at this stage apart from where the actual stadium was going to be. They've just put planning in for a Cricket stadium on what was the site

Eircom park was the other option floated, that was to be on the ground of CityWest Hotel if I remmeber correctly.

The motorway exit hasn't been built either; and thank feck for that - it would open in to the queues for the N3 junction!

That's the one. But I don't know what you've read about a former concrete plant; the stadium is built on top of a former golf course, and is surrounded by open parkland to the north and the south, as you'll see if you zoom out your google maps view. There was some light industrial development on part of the area in the past (plus a sewage filtration plant) but if the contamination resulting from that didn't prevent the construction of the stadium buildings it certainly wouldn't have prevented the surfacing of land for car parks, if that was what was wanted.

It should be added that having limited or no public parking at major public sports grounds is pretty standard in Australia. And it's not unknown in other countries — there's no parking at Landsowne Road, for example. (There's a public car park under the stadium, but it's closed on match days.) And no car parking is provided at Croke Park.

I used to live near the old Perth footie stadium in Subiaco it was pretty easy to access via train. They'd just put on extra carriages on match days and the crowd would be gone in about 90 mins.
