Yep, i think that's a pretty rotten draw for us. It's statistically almost impossible that in a supposedly random draw we would get 21 away games out of 25, 1st day out. I can see staying up and staying in sam being very difficult this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,557 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

If we can’t beat Louth, Kildare & Offaly, we’ve no interest being in Sam to be honest. Going on the last couple of years, Mayo result aside, there isn’t much historic evidence that we belong there either.

That said, as much as I don’t like the manager, given his experience, he should be better than the last man who hadn’t even managed a club team. He also has an in depth knowledge of every player in the county.

Westmeath played some good football in the league under McCabe but had a trend of throwing away games. That followed into the Tailtean Cup. They lost to limerick and then Wicklow in the quarter finals. Had been 8pts up in the second half ,but didn't see it out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,557 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

I’d imagine though they would have had problems with strength in depth given the number of lads who stepped away.

Kingscourt have been terrible so far. This is a bad showing for Cavan Senior football. Faulkner is obviously a loss but not all down to him.

This has been so embarrassing. On course for Cavans worst defeat since 2015 ..Surprise surprise Kingscourt involved that time too .

Very good comeback to bring it to extra time. Cian Shekelton can offer the County team a lot on that form.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,557 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

To be honest you can take nothing but negativity for Cavan football from that game. I don’t like using the term “the worst ever” but surely the first half was just that by a Cavan senior team in this competition.

Very disappointing that Kingscourt didn’t kick on when they managed to drag it to extra time. There was mention of Martin for the Cavan senior team but the kick outs were shocking. Look at that period in Extra Time where Erne Gaels pulled away. He kept kicking it to the same area.

If McCabe hasn’t phoned young Sheckleton already, he may get him on the phone. What age is he?

Cuchullains looked a better side than Kingscourt

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38 Custard_Cream

I actually felt the standard of the intermediate game was as good if not better than the senior game. Kingscourt showed some character in the second half to be fair but they are extremely limited.

You really start to wonder if a Cavan team will ever win again in this competition. Last year when Crosserlough rattled Kilcoo you felt it was very close .. tonight it feels light years away again.

Over run in extra time. Erne Gaels had a lot of pace and more sharper. They played the Fermanagh Co final and replay since the Cavan final. Why did the Co board need to play the Co final so early? The dates for Ulster are known well in advance.

Shelkton was a Co minor in 2017 when they got to the All Ireland Semi. He would be 25 now.

Id have to agree id say that Irvinestown team could rattle senior in Fermanagh next year...thought they were impressive just very wasteful.

    Cucus efficient.

The wait for all 3 teams in each grade to have first round wins continues. Never get a better chance than this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,557 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

The intermediate was a great game. I really worried for Cucus in the first 20 minutes. Irvinestown much the better team. Then, even when Cucus would get a goal to pull away, they’d chip at the lead until they pulled them back level.

Like the county final though, Cuchulainns were impressive at showing their class when under pressure. Niall McGee and Tobin were very good. Is it just me or does Niall Carolan not really stand out in club football? I know it’s a lazy analysis of county footballers but I’ve to come to expect alot of him.

They play Clonoe in the Semi , unbeaten so far this year in league and Championship.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38 Custard_Cream

I wouldn't read too much into the unbeaten record. Tyrones structure is very different to ours with the knockout championship. I remember when Drumlane got to the Ulster final a few years ago people were blowing up the unbeaten Tyrone team on that occasion and Drumlane should have won that .

I think it will be a 50 50 game in two weeks time, the game yesterday will bring on the Cucus a lot .. Irvinestown were a very good outfit.

On a separate note, can anyone explain how Glenullin from Derry are still playing in the Ulster intermediate? They are in it every year at this stage . Talk about taking the biscuit.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,521 ✭✭✭rrs

The team Drumlane played were good ,but didn't have any household names. Conor McAliskey and Daniel McNulty featured with Tyrone at Senior. Declan McAlure also. A few u20s too. But cuchulains have good players too and the game yesterday will have brought them on.

A 5 week break for cucus was silly. Other counties have their club championship designed that they wont have a huge break for Ulster.

Decided to take a look at our record in Ulster compared to other counties since Cavan Gaels got to that Ulster final in 2017.

    It really is abysmal.

    Down 11 Wins 4 Losses

    Derry 9 Wins 4 losses

    Monaghan 8 Wins 6 losses

    Donegal 6 Wins 5 Losses

    Fermanagh 5 Win 6 Losses

    Tyrone 5 Wins 5 Losses

    Armagh 3 Wins 6 Losses

    Antrim 1 Win 6 Losses

    Cavan 0 Wins 6 Losses

What is the issue with Cavan Club football at Senior Level?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 38 Custard_Cream

And looking back, the draw has been fairly kind in a lot of them years (Excl. Kilcoo)

I think I'm correct in saying, 3 separate clubs had never won a game in the competition prior to facing a Cavan team. (And haven't since) Coleraine 2018 v Castlerahan, Enniskillen Gaels V Gowna 2022 and Erne Gaels on Saturday night . In addition, I think we have drawn Glenties twice who are far from prolific when it comes to Ulster. Teams must really lick there lips when they get a Cavan team.

To be fair to the Gaels, they were able to pick up a win or two in the competition when they were going well. They seemed to get St Galls a lot in the draw who would go on to win all Irelands.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭South of the Bann

    That is true.

Yeah Cavan Gaels were the only team capable of getting a win alright but should they have done better given their dominance?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭South of the Bann

For the interest of fairness to that Great Gaels side I went back to as far back as 2000-2024; we still have the worst record however.

    Derry 44 Wins 15 Losses

    Armagh 31 Wins 16 Losses

    Down 27 Wins 22 Losses

    Tyrone 22 Wins 22 Losses

    Donegal 17 Wins 23 Losses

    Monaghan 17 Wins 24 Losses

    Antrim 15 Wins 22 Losses

    Fermanagh 10 wins 24 Losses

    Cavan 9 wins 24 Losses

Cavan, Fermanagh and Monaghan the only counties not to win a Ulster Championship in that period.

Gaels from 2004 - 2010 should have won at least 1 or 2 Ulsters. They were one of the best club teams in the country at that time . There were a few things that went against them in my view :

1 Discipline - they were notoriously in disciplined. They finished an Ulster quarter final with 12 men one year i remember.

    2. Ulster was stacked with heavy hitters back then. Crossmaglen, St Galls, Ballinderry etc. Gaels generally lost to the would be winners most years. The quality of Ulster thas diminished a lot since them days in my opinion.

That Gaels team would have had no issues with Erne Gaels if they were around today.

Gweedore won Ulster in 2018 and haven't won Donegal since. They seemed to give it all for the year, and the hunger went and some went travelling. Cassidy was a great target man that year.

Glenswilly beat Cavan Gaels I think in 2011 in Breffni. That was a bad defeat. I think they had won their first co title while the Gaels were dominating Cavan. Murphy and Neil Gallagher had great games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,557 ✭✭✭Cavan_King

How many clubs per capita have we compared to those other counties?

If you ask me, a lot of the issues in this county come back to having too many clubs. Demographics is now starting to sort that out it appears.

We’ve had an issue of quantity over quality for years now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,833 ✭✭✭celt262

How would that have any bearing on the likes off Ramor and Crosserlough two off the biggest clubs in the County failing in Ulster? If we had less clubs in the County would that make them two more competitive in Ulster?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,521 ✭✭✭rrs

Plus when Cavan Gaels were successful they had a very big panel. Anthony Forde and Michael Lyng increased the quality.

Slaughneil in Derry are a small rural club. Not near the numbers of Cavan Gaels.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12 BreffniBoy123

Both Shekelton brothers have been called into the senior panel by McCabe supposedly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭South of the Bann

That could be worth doing an exercise on alright.

Interesting point on geographics though... Population is heavily weighted towards the east if the county and the satellite / suburb areas around Cavan town.

Is it a case we've too many clubs in some parts of the county and too few in others.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭South of the Bann

Slaughtneil might be a rural club and I'm not sure of the population but they're a bit of an institution and a model club in many ways.

They've won Ulsters at Football Hurling and Camogie in recent years.

To be so successful at Hurling in an area with little tradition is nothing short of incredible.

Am I right in saying Chrissy McKeigue is full time employed by the club also?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 54 ✭✭South of the Bann

In fairness to Crosserlough they were only in Ulster once in recent years and should've beat a Kilcoo team which slaughtered Scotstown the next day out... Hard done by a couple of black cards if I remember right.

Ramor had a couple of very poor performances to be fair. Beaten by first time champions Maghery from Armagh and hammered by Kilcoo.

Castlerahan getting beat by Glenties 3 days after winning Donegal championship was an embarrassing one .

Missed opportunity for a Gowna or Crosserlough in Ulster this year to right the wrongs of the last 3 years
