My Shield TV will be 10 years old in February 2026 , it's incredible the way Nvidia kept supporting it for so long, if they release an updated version I'd get it but I do wonder how many people would get it now considering the advancements in Smart TV software with many apps available now for smart TVs.

Now that the Switch 2 is out Nvidia might upgrade the Shield, it would be long overdue.

Even if they do block sideloading apps there's still Widows, you can stream from Windows, iptv, and most of all, torrents which are increasing in popularity again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,470 ✭✭✭Damien360

Haven't used or seen torrents since the days of Napster.

I use the Shield also. You are right about windows is the other option and you can get really small form PC's for the job.

Well thats what I was saying about 10 posts before yours. Wouldn't panic yet but if I was looking for a new iptv box now Id definitely be considering a non certified box like TOX3 (budget end) or Formuler z11 or z12 (higher end).

Torrents are good when I want a proper high quality 4K movie with decent bitrate.

Here's a trick you can try which might persuade you to go the windows route, even if it might be the more expensive option it's a lot less hassle than trying to side load apps.

In your Chrome browser, go to, for example, ITVX, then click on the 3 dots, go to "cast, save and share" Then click on " install page as app" Name it to ITVX and voila you now have ITVx saved as app you can get in start or save to task bar, not a lot of people know about this little trick. Make sure and log in first before you install page as app and when you click on the app on the task bar it will open logged in, pretty neat !

This doesn't work when there are only android installations available but at least it solves the hassles of trying to sideload U.K TV aps, once you have VPN set to U.K and log in you won't have issues with broken apps or the hassles of sideloading.

It’ll be interesting to see what apps Amazon choose to block. There are a few legitimate apps out there that don’t inherently provide pirated content and can be used without breaking any copyright laws.

VLC, Kodi, Tivimate and Stremio(to a lesser degree) would probably fall into this category.

Glad I went with an Xiaomi tv box now, no requirement for silly money and they absolutely purr.

Sideloading for UK & US official apps are of no problem. VPN works a dream.

3rd gen Xiaomi box is a super spec. Ive posted it and the latest stick a few times. Only difference in spec is the amount of storage is less on the stick. My only concern was the 2gb ram but if its running well for you then its obviously not a problem.

On the second and probably would upgrade the main sitting room box, providing it was 4GB of Ram.

Absolutely brilliant boxes for all that anyone requires and more.

Just bang aptoide on them and away ya go. Also downloads via downloader without any issues.

I remember the first Android TV box I got , the minix neo x7 back around 2014, it was pretty good at the time.

    The Xiaomi looks good.

I'm the same as you. I use it in the lg os. I'm happier with it built into the TV and on the remote.

The full version of smarters has catch up. If i want to use that i stream on my laptop

I think The Sun or similar rags have been the only one's promoting the idea that Amazon were acting against side loaded apps.

Interestingly Amazon themselves haven't said a word about it directly.

I think it could all be a lot of hot air.

Im not saying I use a dodgy firestick and im not saying its was told by a provider that you need to block updates and data sharing etc..

Paid tv was fine when you had sky sports and it had well.all the sports. Now the sports are split among so many channels

Its got so bad now that the next thing will he you get to watch the first half of the game on Sky sports and the second half will be on another channel

Well AFTVnews have just posted an update:

    Screenshot_2025-11-06-17-00-39-218_com.android.chrome-edit.jpg

Theyre usually accurate. The recent block of certain malware / monetisation apps looks like a test run for the real rollout. As mentioned above how will this sync up with apps like kodi / tivimate etc. Tivimate is a lifetime sub paid up front.

AFTVnews were quoting The Sun earlier though.

My view is that if Amazon was going to act globally you can be sure they'd announce it themselves.

Only time will tell I guess...…

p.s. There are a couple of settings under the privacy tab of the Fire stick which might help users from potentially prying eyes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,786 ✭✭✭irishgeo

Would they like to admit that they knew that the fire stick was being used for illegal purposes. It's not type of thing of thing you admit in a worldwode press announcement especially when you are have rights to the biggest sports events.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 18,084 Mod ✭✭✭✭Henry Ford III

They wouldn't have to admit anything, just say that they are making some changes in relation to unapproved apps.

As I said I've yet to hear of a single warning or closed down app anywhere in the world.

Yip. Sounds exactly like whats being reported. Test run a few months back. Slow rollout now in the works. All depends on what they block but could be a headache for the likes of my in laws who are not techy and have a firestick with a skinned smarters app on it. So basically a headache for me!

Amazon know it's a waste of time. Firestick sales will stop and everyone will transition to some other device.

    They aren't stupid.

Amazon probably don't care because they make so much from Their online store and especially AWS.

Windows apps will get a lot more popular and people will switch to the likes of the Xiaomi Android boxes.

I would suspect that most iptv is done via firestick, but most firesticks aren't for iptv

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 155 ✭✭blinking

Until of course the other manufacturers do the same - or Google does as they're all Android based. Amazon are not doing this out of the goodness of their hearts towards Sky et al after all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 7,261 ✭✭✭jj880

Not every fire stick owner is using the device for iptv. You think Amazon are making big margins on fire stick devices bought by iptv sellers / users? I doubt it. They want buyers who will subscribe to prime video, amazon music etc.

AFTnews may have quoted the Sun initially but then they contacted Amazon and got confirmation. Are you saying AFTnews are making this up?

They've sold quite a few firesticks - how much they've made on them is anyone's guess.

Tweaking the innards of them retrospectively isn't going to generate loads of new paying Amazon customers either I'd imagine.

Lastly I'm not certain the whole thing isn't just "fake news". There have been no warnings or apps blocked reported so far anywhere.

So solution is IPTV on LG or alternative android device like NVIdia shield or some other alternative?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,379 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

This could all turn out to be the end of iptv on Firesticks, but it won't be the end of iptv.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,478 ✭✭✭Homer

it might just mean switching to a different app on the Firestick but it for sure won’t be the end of Firesticks for iptv. Sure I’ve family members running iptv for years off Apple TV boxes .. just a different version of whack a mole

I wouldn't be making any decisions on scrapping firesticks or ponying up for other devices until something actually happens.

I'd reckon there'll be "workarounds" found handy enough.

Agreed. I said when the firestick select was released there will eventually be workarounds but to avoid it for now. I wouldn't be moving to android right now unless you need to upgrade / need to buy a new device anyway. Some seem to have the blinkers on but imo its careless not to at least consider this recent development.
