quality over quantity is true enough (and a shame they struggle for either) but just like Trek suits episodic over serialisation, it does also lend itself well to longer more procedural seasons, I think.

GoT was a blockbuster epic told in ten parts each season. Lots of shows are like that and it can work great – more time to tell what might have otherwise been a 2 hour movie.

But the best Trek isn’t that. The movies are never as good as the shows and the ten episode seasons seem intent on replicating the movies. But the best of it is the characters you’ve grown to love and admire, arriving at $planet or $spaceThing, solving it with science or morals or good thinking or a little adventure, then warping away and rolling credits.

They don’t all need to be the MOST of everything each week, or even each year. Longer season might give them the opportunity to relax into it a little.

Agreed. I did love the Dominion arc that DS9 took and it was my favourite series overall but look at some of the best or most memorable episodes of Trek (Not always the same thing ).

    TOS:

Devil in The Dark (Miners impact alien slug)

    Amok Time (Spock gets horny)

    Journey to Babel (Space Politics)

And this is leaving out the "Biggies" which either impacted the show going forward like "Space Seed" or "Balance of Terror" and also leaving out episodes which were about end of the Federation type stuff like the (awesome) "City At The Edge Of Forever". For all the "The Federation never existed" it was because of a small thing.

    TNG:

Inner Light (Will say no more. My favourite TNG episode)

    Sarek (Dealing with dementia)

    Family (Dealing with PTSD)

And again, this is leaving out biggies like "Yesterday's Enterprise", "Best of Both Worlds" of course

Even DS9 which leaned heavily into an arc of course had amazing low key standalones like:

    The Visitor (Dealing with loss)

Little Green Men (Just straight up comedy)

Far Beyond The Stars (fantastic masterclass in acting)

And again, this is excluding ANY episodes directly related to the Dominion or even tangentially. Leaving out classics like "Sacrifice of Angels" or "In The Pale Moonlight" which really was a "small episode but with huge ramifications.

Not everything has to be "Sad Alien Destroys Warp" or "Space anomaly destroys uh… space"

Mo more Jar Jar Abrams Star Trek 4 ~ No more Kelvin Timeline!

Star Trek on TV to end with what's left of SNW and possibly 2 Seasons of Academy?

Didn't realize he had a bad record. Lost my main youtube account with all my account follows (nearly 90 days ago)! So trying to get another account established with some sort of algorithm of good content.

Like they say a broken clock is right twice a day, that guy spouts so much nonsense, some little unknown guy in the UK has high up contacts in every studio worldwide GTFO

He's essentially a mellower British version of Doomcock, who similarly collates 4-Chan rumors into "Hollywood Sources" or "Hollywood Spies" etc….

I was taken in a bit by him early on, but it didn't take too long for the mask to slip for him to just start ranting about Trek problems for the sake of ranting (ala Doomcock). I really don't like what Kurtzman has done to Trek either, but I'd rather hear real news about what's actually going to happen as opposed to a Youtuber making up fictional "sources" to declare that "Kurtzman is essentially fired" or "Kathleen Kennedy is out at Lucasfilm. Bob Eger is pissed!! There was a meeting…with yelling!" Ad-infinitum for yeeeeeers.

It's a challenge to find a happy middle on the likes of Youtube since you're often given the choice between the various Doomcock / Critical Drinker clones, or fully subscribed shill channels for the studio like for example "Trek Culture". I miss the old days where reviewers had at least some scruples.

The merger with Skydance is 4 months old. Id wait about another 6 months before decisions and announcements start getting made.

ST Academy is coming out in January. How successful that is will determine the future of Trek.

Watch this space but wait for official press releases not rumours.

"ST Academy is coming out in January. How successful that is will determine the future of Trek"

I don't think so. Academy has a bit of a spinoff feel to it and I doubt execs will make decisions based on this show.

I don't know what being a spin-off has to do with the price of fish. Some of the most successful TV series in history were spinoffs. Frasier was a spin off of Cheers and became one of the most awarded shows on TV. Better Call Saul was a spin off of Breaking Bad and became more popular. Lest we forget TNG itself was a spin off.

TV Execs could not care less whether something is a spinoff or not, all they care about is what do people want to watch. That used to be viewing figures, its now number of downloads and numbers of subscribers. If Academy meets or even exceeds projections, we can expect more Academy. If it does not meet projections, it could be a one season wonder.

Its a spinoff in the sense that it is a niche take on Star Trek that is designed to target a particular demographic.

Academy being a failure won't influence whether Skydance try to make their own main line style Trek show or try cash in on the IP with more nostalgia shte.

I think we are going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

Hard to compare a few movies to 12 seasons but As bad as some episodes are SNW does the same thing as JJ but on its good days much better. ide watch Picard s1 again before a JJ movie too.

nah, in terms of contribution to Trek overall those movies were the worst. Their only saving grace is that there were mercifully few of them to complain about.

    Gone and hopefully soon forgotten.

Oh they're forgettable garbage for sure, but at least they were self contained in their own little bubble.

yeah, although for a while there we were getting spin-off media like games, comics, and novels that seemed to treat those movies and that style as just the way Trek is now. Hopefully all that goes away too.

Stupid looking gargantuan hot-rod Enterprise and all the rest of it.

The styling goes away if Kurtzman and his studio eventually lose the agreement make Trek. He's a legacy from the Abrams movies, and Discovery smacked of something that should have been part of the Kelvin-verse (Bridge Windows, polished deck floors, lens flairs left right and center). I still believe that Discovery was originally intended to be part of the Kelvin timeline and when it was eventually suggested that it should be part of the original Trek timeline…they found themselves stuck with a show that didn't seem to belong.

Trek 2009 was a pretty decent space adventure movie. Into Darkness was piss poor, and Beyond alternated from "Meh" to "Yea..it's ok". However they screwed themselves and the brand over twice. Once by reconning away 40 years of established stories, TV shows and marketing in order to get a clean slate. And then once more by giving up on that clean slate and trying to go back to those 40 years as if nothing had happened.

The JJ Trek movies live in this bizarre limbo because of this, which unfortunatly means that we might never see another Trek movie…or at least not one that's in-sequence with the re-established Trek universe.

I wouldn't mind a sequel in the same vein as Lower Decks, where Mariner ends up in command of some god-awful starship (maybe an Oberth, as karma paying her back for crashing one) with Boilmer as her first officer and the other Lower Deckers making up the various department positions on the ship.

Lower Decks was fun Trek. I miss it.

Beyond is my favourite because it works better than the others as a good action movie which is what those movie were.

And I will always have some respect for those movies having the good sense to make it clear they were an alternative timeline and not mess with prime like Disco

Their saving grace (and at same time their worst waste) was the casting

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,244 ✭✭✭Rawr

There was at least that. I think that's part of my disappointment with what happened with Discovery.

I felt pretty sad that the Trek I had grown up with had gone away with Trek 2009, but at the same time I felt that a clean slate could be an exciting new possibility to experince a brand new Trek. I'm of the feeling that they should have either stuck with it, or not bothered at all. Instead we got what we got alas.

there’s definitely a through line from JJ-Trek to Kurtzman-Trek but I honestly don’t think Kurtzman was as egregious. Like I don’t love it by any means but, just talking about look and feel, I don’t think I hate any of it as much as I hate the JJ Enterprise, bridge set, engineering set, etc.

And I don’t agree that the casting was any big win for JJ either.

All of those things we have 1:1 comparisons for with JJ vs Kurtzman, in terms of those movies vs SNW, and it’s a hands down SNW victory for me. Despite its own flaws.

With the maybe exception of Kirk, but that’s more Paul Wesley’s lacklustre than Chris Pine’s success. Jury’s still out on Wesley too.

The more I think about it the more it boils my piss. It's been the only Trek in years that I genuinely looked forward to seeing each week, actually looking forward to getting home on whatever day of the week it came out so I could see it.

I was a bit ambivalent about the first few episodes but once it hit its stride it rarely missed, for me.

SNW is okay but I still haven't gotten round to watching the new season, tbh I may even wait til I buy the Blu-Ray. Compare that to "oooh what time is it, will the new Lower Decks episode be out yet?"
