Fair enough but the counter argument is that this is now like a new game because of the three up and the 2-point arc. Sounds like Andy's panel will be much different but last year we had no reliable 2-point shooters on the starting fifteen. No real left footed shooters either. The standout shooters in Mayo as of this year's club championship are Regan, Callaghan, Kobe, Towey, Ryan and Kilkelly (largely frees). Not much new talent there.

When you see what Regan did at the end of the game you'd have to imagine there could be role for him. Even 15 or 20 minutes at the end he could be a match winner.

I'd imagine there will be a conversation with himself and Andy from what Andy has been saying about leaving the door open for former players. It will be interesting to see if he wants it himself or not!

I know he got what looked like a serious injury (and maybe that proves to some extent Andy's decision) but when you see the influence Eoghan McLaughlin has on the Westport team, and especially his physicality in the middle third, you really have to question his judgement on this one. Like, would you have Brickenden on the squad ahead of him?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,963 ✭✭✭Westernview

Its a tough one. He is so athletic and physical but also gives away possession so easily. Reminds me of Colm Mac back in the day in some ways.

Against Galway in Castlebar last year everyone around me was tearing their hair out when McLaughlin, on a number of occasions lost the ball cheaply high up the field, leading to Galway counter attacks. He is a liability in those situations.

Actually, when you think about it, Brick was surely the man who should have been tagging Regan in those later stages of the county final

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 727 ✭✭✭GBXI

His positive turnovers are huge though and he makes things happen, creates chances with pace and direct running. You mention the trade offs but most players who create things give the ball away. Aidan and Ryan lose a lot of ball but we accept that because of what they create. The opposite type of player is Carney, Coen, Brickenden who rarely enough give the ball away but they also do sweet FA when they have it.

AOS is dispossessed less than any other Mayo player.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,252 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

If by making things happen include raising my blood pressure and increasing my chances of cardiac arrest... Then he certainly does make things happen!

I'm (half) joking there. He can be an exceptional player at times, but I think the better teams know how to play him at this stage. Let him have the ball / space and then swarm him, his distribution / decision making under pressure is his weakness.

I would hope that Andy starts looking for a few solutions outside of the current squad. We know the squad isn't what it needs to be, so I would prefer taking chances, or giving time, to those who might come in and make a difference versus sticking with those who we already know.

In full tilt, there's few as powerful as McLaughlin. I wouldn't be writing him off but personally, I would only be using him in a very very open game...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 727 ✭✭✭GBXI

I'd highly doubt that. AOS is great and has been so important to the team but he definitely turns over two to three balls a game versus say a Coen or Carney who would never take a risk. Anyway, it's not a criticism of AOS, it's to say that the odd turnover is not a big deal, it's the overall impact.

Maybe you have more awareness of what's out there than me but as I said when I heard the news of his dropping, if there are better half backs/middle third players in Mayo outside the current squad than EMcL then Mayo are in a way stronger place than I thought they were.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,252 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

I doubt I've any more awareness than the average follower, but in the limited games I've seen, I would be hoping that the new management would try (and be given time to try) to develop (continue to develop) the likes of Dawson. Aware that he was in the set-up last year.

Is Dawson a better play than McLaughlin at present, I wouldn't say so. But I would say that if they focus on his development, l think he has a higher ceiling than McLaughlin for example.

I don't mind if the new management make a few hard calls, which might leave the team weaker in the short term, as long as they're building to be stronger in the medium - long term.

A bit early for a board-management clash. The board have a valid point though, the county panel effectively doesn't exist to be dropping players off.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,252 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

Andy Moran appointed in August, do we expect him to wait until late October to start the ball rolling?

I'd be extremely disappointed if he waited. He's obviously going to be having conversations with the players he wants involved next year, and imo, having the decency to tell those he hasn't got plans for.

Some of those delegates are showing a fair bit of naivety, and Tuohy showing a real lack of judgement by publicly stating he'll be "having a word with management"… nothing surprising there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,963 ✭✭✭Westernview

Based on the manner I've heard that EMcL was spoken to when informed that he wouldn't be part of the plans, I dont think decency had much to do with it.

I agree on the Touhy point though. Often comes across a bit amateurish.

Not the first time the Farragher lad looked for a bit of publicity by bringing up stuff at a co board meeting. There's a few like that who love their own voices. Andy is the manager, let him manage or he'll be out the door in double quick time and this time it'll be the managers own decision. Very bad decision by Touhy to say what he's supposed to have said. I'd imagine he'll be told that by Moran in no uncertain manner. Might be a good idea for clubs to think twice before deciding, as their AGM's are ending, who they vote to represent them as Co Board officers. Far too many people re-elected, with no vote and in it for decades. No wonder it's a closed shop. 3/5 years and no more for all club and board officers. At least that way new ideas will get through.

No, but I think Moran has made a bad call on EML. There is no hiding from that. It's because this is seen as a bad call, it is been called out by these buckos. Now a part of me wonders if they would do this to Horan…. they would not dream to do this to Horan, but then again Horan would not have done what Moran did without giving everyone a chance. Horan was cutthroat in his first stint but I always felt he was fair and respectful. When I read this, I thought they don't believe Moran is the man and they just want a puppet manager. They are already questioning him within….two months…. this looks bad on all sides and stinks of ego tripping, lack of respect, lack of authority…..

I think the likes of Touhy and some other no marks in the county board should keep their mouths shut and let Andy get on with whatever he wants.

Imagine if the tables were turned and he started bringing up the many, many cock ups, sh1te storms and general shambles that the Mayo CB are nationally known for.

Andy has delivered all his life for Mayo football.I think I know who most Mayo fans would back .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,871 ✭✭✭muddle84

Nobody knows what was actually said between Moran and EMCL. Any leaks about what was said is coming from EMCL's side so is biased. Maybe there's more behind why he has been dropped and its nothing to do with his abilities, the fact that he did this when Westport were on a run in the championship really makes me wonder as the timing is absolutely shite!

They would have absolutely done this to Horan when he was only 2 months into it on his first stint if he started dropping players before they had even played an FBD match, I imagine its the delegates closest to the players that have been dropped that have taken an issue with it. Was EOD dropped also?

I was delighted to see that he has that ruthlessness in him, I'm just hoping he has the same level of it when it comes to players that he played with for years. It's really disappointing to hear the county board turning on him like that though!

Teething problems, if they have any cop-on between them, Tuohy and Andy should be able to have a chat and put it to bed and agree the boundaries between mgmt and Co board (although that should have been done before now).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 727 ✭✭✭GBXI

Yes, I was there. Agree it looked like a bad hamstring tear but let's see. For all we know he will be flying fit by the end of January. Andy is right in that he is injury prone but so are lots of players, especially ones with elite pace.

To the poster who compared him to Dawson. An interesting comparison, Dawson is a very tidy player with potential but there is room for both on the panel. One thing I'll say that Dawson lacks majorly is aggression/physicality. He's very much in the Fergal Boland mold.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,275 ✭✭✭FullBack Jam

Wasn't Dawson playing in the forwards for Mayo last year? EML is definitely not a forward.

Dawson was right in front of me at the Westport/Breaffy match. I didn't think he was slight in stature at all. He did a crunching tackle on one of the Breaffy guys anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,252 ✭✭✭✭PARlance

I only really drew a comparison as both are from the same club.

For me, with the way the game has gone, it's the Fergal Boland mold which is more suited, or to be more exact, players with an ability to kick two pointers, who are more important these days. Dawson has that ability from what I've seen and we all know we need to strengthen that part of our game.

EMcL's best bits came in chaos imo. In games that were a bit more open, his strong running could come to the fore. Defences are so structured these days, I don't think he has those opportunities as much / our play isn't as chaotic as it once was.

I'm not EMcL's biggest fan, but I wouldn't object to him being in the squad... But I also totally get if Andy doesn't see him in his plans either.

Any word on league fixtures yet? Usually provisional dates would be out around mid October.
