Thank you for your kind answer. Now Gilbert's final match finished. Otago 28 v Canterbury 36. he didn't stand out in atacking. Under strong wind his catching was stable and tackling was not weak (but not very strong). It's good that he seemed finishing the game without any injury.

Does anyone know what Gilbert's percentage success rate with place kicking? My expectations are fairly measured. I see the logic here in not relying on Ioane off the tee (allow him to concentrate on what he does well), and we have not settled on a 15 since Tiernan began to decline. So Gilbert adds a concrete option.

When opportunities arise, however, I'm in favour of continuing the efforts to develop at full back. Happy to see Naughton and West given opportunities from this POV. And those guys plus Forde etc need to continue work on their place kicking.

That's a tough one to take. Unfortunately our reshuffled back three lost the kicking battle in the second half and we couldn't get any possession or territory. The defence and physicality were heartening though.

It didn't help that we couldn't buy a decision in the second period, extremely frustrating refereeing performance with too many errors to list. I still don't know what Boyle did, that penalty was a 50m swing at the least and potentially the deciding of the game. Made all the more maddening by Fixe being allowed run with a full offensive line blocking for him in the leadup to the winning try.

Well we've certainly sealed up that leaky defense. Glad they have a few weeks off to recover from that battle.

Illo continues to impress, his call up for the Ireland A fixture is fully warranted. Paul Boyle continues his heroic run, Josh Murphy was a man possessed, and I'd like to see Barrett take more ball in hand. Concerned about the total absence of a threat on the deck.

We got very little distance on our kicks from the hand and can't afford to leave every conversion on the table. Sorry to see Ralston go off like that, looked rough. Would like to see Jennings given another chance in the back three.

If we had a semi consistent goal kicker we'd have two extra wins already this season.

On the plus side the defence does look better so far. Teams are having to work much harder to score against us.

Real shame about the Ralston injury. Seemed to be coming into some of his best form since he joined. Looked serious unfortunately.

Crazy situation to lose because there is no-one who can slot very straight forward conversions. A couple of those misses today were crimial.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,955 ✭✭✭testtech05

At least one of them should have been scored you would think without knowing the wind situation etc. Munster only kicked 1 as well but it's a major weakness for us at the moment. There will be pressure on Gilbert to change that when he gets up and running

Forde, Naughton, West should pursue long-time practice in this Nov especially kicking (both place and from the hands). I think that Connacht won't need Ioane. And I have a bit doubt about kicking ability of Gibert. He was 2nd choice kicker at Otago, so got llittle kicking chance. On the other hand, I know his kicking career as the main kicker in Hilanders.

I wonder why B.Murphy has kicked so many short -distance box kicking because almost time of them were catched by Munster players. At the end of day, Connacht couldn't done good line-break, so had no choice to depend on readable (simple) kickngs. Maybe it's because he thought that they lost wingers of both side due to injuries. But it's too much. Congratulation to Harry West who perform well (full-time). I know he has been suffered by many injuries so long time since U20 time.

Gilbert hasn't been kicking for his Otago the couple of occasions I watched them so I wouldn't be expecting a Halfpenny regen slotting into the team.

Whilst out defence is looking much better that is slightly related to our lack of poach threat. We're not actively looking to go for turnovers, we're using the system Leinster had a few years back where you try to keep 15 on their feet in the line. Means you cover the field really well but teams can retain the ball quite easily. Worked really well for the most part but we weren't able to exit as well as we might so we ended up camped in our third.

The defense is looking much improved this season however our attack is blunt and lacks creativity in the backs and we dont have the power game either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 357 ✭✭AccidentallyOnside

Think we're a bit early to make any judgement on the attack. Backline was very patched together last night with the injuries, and we're much more pragmatic this year, in our half of a couple of phases to see if we can make a good position to kick and then clear. Our kicking game isn't there yet but you'd hope it would improve over time with focus on it, and it's definitely improved since the Cardiff game. After the way we defended last year there was always going to be a re-correction away from the attack.

Good to see a bit of a resurgence from Niall Murray too, we focus a bit too much on the things he isn't great at but not many second rows are chasing down wingers like he did, and he's the best lineout stealer in the league by a distance.

Gilbert isn't kicking for Otago because of Cam Miller.

Remember that name, he'll be playing for the All Blacks very soon.

The attack is looking similar to how it was last year when Connacht got into the 22, shifting the ball left and right and eventually running out of numbers or knocking on. They scored lots of great trys last season but were exceptionally blunt as the phase count went up.

Might just be my memory but I remember being very frustrated at a lot of the attack.

That’s a tough loss to take, although I am not sure we looked like truly winning the game in that second half either.

I think there’s lots of positives after four games. Lancaster has used the majority of the squad as he said he would. Some pretty inexperienced selections were largely competitive. So that’s good. There are probably 5-10 younger players who will be all the better for it and of those, a handful will likely feed into regular match day squads.

I think the game 2 postponement really hurt us in terms of momentum and working through early season rustiness. Really hurt us.

We’ve also managed to pick up bonus points in every game and have kept games to a single score.

Sadly however, results matter and we are on a three game losing streak. So that’s not acceptable.

The lack of power up front, coupled with a poor enough kicking game is hurting us. Who was the last decent kicker we had can anyone remember?!

I also agree with others that our attack game looks very blunt.

Anyway, we need to hit the ground running when play resumes or we will be left behind.

“Who was the last decent kicker we had can anyone remember?!”

Off the top of my head,
    Dan Parks 2012/13-2013/14,
    AJ MacGinty 2015/16.

Craig Ronaldson was pretty solid kicking from no.12 too I think. Freed up Jack to play some great rugby at the time too before he had his accident.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35 Mr Hinx

It’s crazy to think we may have played a circa a decade without a consistent kicker!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,428 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Watching Leinster towards the end of last season when the kicker wasn't doing well, was really disappointing. I've come to take excellent kicking for granted. The points really add up in a game and connacht would be dead right to target a good kicker or develop a good kicker form the players they have.

I remember Forde kicking well a couple of seasons ago. I really wanted him to get his kick on Saturday so he could be an obvious option. The convention of 10s kicking for goal is fine as long as they're actually the best kicker in the team. None of Connacht's kickers are very good. Makes sense to look to develop other options.

Dead right. I think all their chips are in on Sam Gilbert who should arrive over the new few weeks. I hope they have done their homework eh.

We need more than Gilbert to place kick though. He wont play every game so either development of someone in the squad or we will have to go looking again. What is the contract situation with Ioane? I like him as our 10 so I would hope he is re-signed but he cant be our kicker.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35 Mr Hinx

I think Lancaster will be begging Harry Byrne to come west. Won’t happen but the solution will have to be domestic I think. Maybe another young gun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,955 ✭✭✭testtech05

It's a bit early to write Naughton off yet surely. Forde also previously showed good signs as a goal kicker but admittedly missed a couple i expected he would get at the weekend.

Joey Carbery is out of Contract at the end of this year and recently said he'd be open to coming back to Ireland and obviously has a prexisting relationship with Lancaster

Devine was blocked for the attempted catch which he was penalised … It was pretty clear

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,044 ✭✭✭CowboyTed

I say we could have Gilbert, Naughton, Carty and possibly West as kickers… Cathal isn't great, not bad but we can do better…

Ioane is a pretty bad kicker from penalties in the hand and on the ground.. He doesn't have a huge boot and in our wind it can get dragged all over the place..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,044 ✭✭✭CowboyTed

Would be a good option for us… Very good player… Played 1169 mins last season…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,044 ✭✭✭CowboyTed

Naughton hasn't started a game as the number one choice kicker.

Personally I would love to see him at 10 and kicker with Devine as SH… Even if they tried for a half and see how it goes…

Carbury would be a very nice addition to our options. Need a big solid hooker and as well.
