i switched from SSE to EI circa 12th Sep , ended up being charged incorrectly 100 early term fee by SSE , had to ring to resolve that. They re-issued bill and i had approx 198 in credit (due to solar). I was not waiting for the refund as i expected some more CEG payment to be added to the credit. They automatically refunded me the credit yesterday.

I will see if I get any CEG payment credit now , I think it mentions they may send a cheque but not sure??

Anyone have similar situation when switching?

I switched to Flogas through bonkers and have received no welcome email from Flogas. Several days later I got a debit confirmation letter from them, which had my new account number on it, so I used that to register on flogas.ie. That triggered their first email to me stating that they would process the registration in 10 working days(!), but when I checked a few hours later the account was already fully activated. Again, no email to confirm any of that. So the communication from Flogas was far from optimal, but the switch itself was completed timely, as confirmed by the closing bill from my previous provider.

I moved to Energia only a few months ago on the 41% discount Axa tariff. Energypal tells me the fixed Flogas rate is now about €100 in my favour over the next 12 months so I'm moving and I'll be €50 better off after the termination fee.

I normally wouldn't bother for €50 but I'm a bit pissed at Energia for increasing prices.

The Flogas BWG tariff is no longer at the races, the ordinary fixed rate is now cheaper. Although as we now know, the Flogas "fixed" rates are not actually fixed.

Spoke to Energia Retention Team yesterday. They are offering the following to existing customers,

EV Smart Drive (4 hour window)

    Day: 0.3793

    EV: 0.089

    Cashback: €50

Smart Data (9 hour night window)

    Day: 0.2949

    Peak: 0.3312

    Night: 0.1621

    Cashback: €150

(VAT included, FIT 18.5c, standing charge €265.01.)

regarding the fixed rate bwg tariff, at tb time of launch people here contacted flo gas to query the wording and were told there would be a pass through increase in October so it was expected at the time. I can’t recall where the pass through increase was coming from right now but I’m sure the resident expert will know 👍

Anyone tried to move from standard flogas contract to better one(30%+€150 cash back for example)?

Yuno needs a smart meter in every case. If someone signs up for a non-smart plan, does my meter stays MCC01?
I have a smart meter with a standard plan.

so Flogas have re sent a bill that I tried to pay off and added another12.50 to it for being sent back they are always sending it when my account is low and I think I’ve had it with them. 4 times they’ve sent it out and 4 times I’ve been charged 12.50 by them, and similar by PTSB so I rang and hopefully they’ll stop it going on days I can’t cover it but it’s a bit of headwreck

you can pay using the online portal if that is easier for you, I use this weekly to pay in advance of the bills

Switched from Energia Smart Data 33% at the end of last month to Electric Ireland Home Electric + SST Saver 30% with €20 cashback. The switch occurred on Oct 1st but my EI account was not accessible until this week due to some technical issues.

All sorted now and got my final bill from Energia also.

Was charged the usual €50 termination charge, but there was no clawback on the €100 customer retention cashback that I was given earlier in the year when I re-contracted with them.

Is it better to go duel fuel at the moment? Looking at going duel fuel with flogas with their 210 welcome credit. Switching from Energia.

I was in contract with SSE for the last year, on site offer to stay with them wasn't great so was going to change to EI but their offer dropped to 24%.

I don't have a smart meter or an EV so just basic price rates for Gas and El.

Rang SSE to see what they could do as I was changing over and fair play with a bit of coaxing they gave me the new customer offer by changing my joint bank account names (wife and me) around.

24.6 Gas and 7.4 El fixed.

Worth talking to them before hitting the button.

Just for information for those who've moved to Flogas. I remembered from my last time with them that you could trigger a gas bill by submitting a meter reading. I submitted a reading on Gas Networks in the 18th and got my bill today. Handy if you'd rather pay monthly.

Switch to FloGas for Elec from EI and already have Gas with them so easier set up. Cant get any dual deals as contract for Gas expires in March. €150 from the first bill should be ok coming into Colder months

Still waiting for my online portal to be set up with Flogas having done the registration on the 17th.

Meanwhile Energia, who I left, sent an email offering a free Google Nest Audio to stay. No mention of a better offer on rates though.

I switched the gas to Flogas on Oct 11th and submitted the actual gas reading to Energia on that day too. In the meantime, the meter reader came along and took another reading on the 16th, which they now have billed me for on top of the 1st reading…

So both suppliers have a finishing and starting reading, and now Energia have a new reading that Flogas should be billing me for. The differential amount of gas is without any discount from Energia as I was out of contract on Oct 11th. A bit sneaky I think… F*ckers..

TBF the switching process can take about 14 days so even though you initiated the switch on Oct 11th, that was never going to be your start date for usage / billing with the new supplier. It takes a few days at least. Nothing underhand from energia there imo

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,274 ✭✭✭Buffman

Sounds more like an error, the meter read possibly went to the wrong supplier as the switch was in progress, and triggered an automatic bill from them.

You need to get onto Energia and get them to adjust the bill back to the 11th "switch" reading. You don't owe them for anything after that as you were no longer their customer after that reading.

Otherwise you'll be possibly getting billed by Flo for the same period (11th on) and be billed twice for those few days and it will become extremely messy to correct.

While the switch may take a few days to go through, the one reading you give on switch day is the final reading for old supplier and first reading for new supplier. Otherwise it would be chaos for billing if multiple different readings were being used.

The below is a general 'signature' and not part of any post:

FYI, if you move to a 'smart' meter electricity plan, you CAN'T move back to a non-smart plan.

You don't have to take a 'smart' meter if you don't want one, opt-out is available.

Buy drinks in 3L or bigger plastic bottles or glass bottles or cartons to avoid the DRS fee.

Public transport user? If you're sick of phantom ghost services on the 'official' RTI sources, check bustimes.org for actual 'real' RTI, if it's on their map it actually exists.

Have you received your closing bill? The end reading with Energianwill be the start reading with FloGas. It'll all line up.

I don't see anything "sneaky" here at all. The closing bill may well be a refund (well credit on the account you'll need to claim).

moving to sse this year was the 1st time it didn't just start from the reading i gave when signing up. moved from ei & it took about 4 days, not sure the reason for the hold up.

can see the closing & opening readings on esbn site

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,274 ✭✭✭Buffman

Presumably both opening and closing readings were identical for both suppliers?

With non-smart meters like gas there's obviously no such facility for 'instant' readings so they have to use what you tell them at switching.

In the unusual case above where a meter reader comes along in the middle of the switch, the customer will have to make sure they won't be charged twice for the same usage.

Looking to change supplier for my parents - was talking to Flogas earlier and the two options were:

    • variable rate (currently ~27c) plus €150 welcome credit
    • fixed rate (~24c)

Their annual usage is ~2800kW so if the variable rate was to remain the same, the 3c difference equates to €84 over the year.

Any opinions on which would be a better offer for them? I'm leaning towards the variable rate option

I've looked at the others and from what I can see, flogas were offering the best deal. Is there someone else I should be looking at?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,505 ✭✭✭✭zell12

    Use the comparison sites kilowatt.ie switcher.ie bonkers.ie powertoswitch.ie

    Yeah, I've already done that.

What I'm looking for are opinions on fixed vs variable unit rate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,816 ✭✭✭bren2001

Most companies announced a price increase before winter. EI didn't announce anything.

I don't see any suggestion that prices are going to go down in the next 12 months. If they do, it'll be minor. I prefer the guarantee that my electricity/gas bill cannot shoot up and that reassurance is worth €70 over the course of a year to me. (that's also coupled with the fact I hate welcome bonuses, I prefer the discount).

Each to their own, plenty here would say "i'd prefer the €70 difference in my pocket and not theirs"

Be aware that as we've seen, Flogas fixed rates are not fixed at all.
