    Not true..

A lot of people are voting for Jim in hope he might win. He wins and we get to do it all over again…

A lot of people are not happy with the choices in front of them.

Who they vote for number 2 is the lesser of two undesired candidates…

There are plenty of Connolly over Humphries voters who think we deserve better and there is better out there..

There are also people vote Jim only, i.e. not giving and 2nd preference vote.

This is better to ensure a protest, a possible rerun, however unlikely, in the event you want neither CC or HH.

In this case there are no transfers.

I view this entire line of reasoning, as being a response to the fact that CC is blatantly of the eurosceptic left. This positioning could damage her support, so in responding to it; The Connolly campaign take a misdirected shot at the EU, seemingly to legitimize her eurosceptic positioning

Thats all it is - i agree with you entirely. But there is very little we can do to 'break through' this smokescreen. people are horrified by GAZA and the Genocide - so CC's campaign deploys child like logic

EU 'supports' Israel against Gaza - There is a genocide in Gaza - Eu therefore 'supports' genocide - Connolly is against Genocide - therefore logical for Connolly to be Anti Eu

Its really rather shocking, but thats whats going on IMHO. I suspect il be criticized for this point, simply because it seemingly goes 'against the grain' -

Sic semper tyrannis - thus always to Tyrants

in the extremely unlikely event of a rerun, what kind of gobshite do you really think would be interested in standing second time round?

We'd end up with a FAR WORSE set of candidates next time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,276 ✭✭✭ForestFire

Well in my opinion can't be worse than the 2 we have, so that's my choice.

But, and again in the very unlikely event, it happened, do you not think a bit more care and choice would be offered.

But to give up on an idea without giving it a chance, no change would ever happen.

In fairness McGunnieas would have beaten Connolly easy IMHO..

FG had there candidate.. FF had a look and said there was no pint even running against McGuinneas. When she pulled they had nothing prepared…

Connolly is doing well cause she is the one most prepared.. Some of her ideas are less so..

Massive outsider… a viral campaign to vote for Jim so he won't take the position… Leaving with us getting a new election with new candidates..

Bertie Ahern wanted to run and made his wishes known to FF management in December 2024. He was fobbed off repeatedly.

CC now into 1/9, 1/10 with some of the bookies. Pack it in Heather!

Could you imagine the questions? The other candidates wouldn’t have got a look in😀

On a side note just watching VM news- CC very clever when being interviewed for her daily news soundbytes- she talked about a “growing movement” of support -I’ve heard that all week - it’s a clever influence technique - subtle but effective - and very calm delivery

HH?” I’ve been to X place- I’m now off to ab and c places - ive got a great reception” - all talk and energy but really the delivery felt flat in comparison - I’d say she’s dying for this to be over

What’s with the new posting style of using bold text throughout long posts?

Can people not make points without it?

Bertie Ahern would have been a better candidate than Gavin. The debates would have been interesting though.

The more this goes on, the more apparent it becomes that Humphreys was bad choice for FG. Connolly is a very effective communicator and some of the broadcast media interviewers just can't cope. One of the funniest parts from a debate was listening to Pat Kenny trying to out-lawyer a lawyer (Connolly) on a legal issue and failing. I don't think that he even bothered asking Humphreys about the same issue.

I'd say she still firmly thinks she's going to win regardless of the polls. She has a unique sense of entitlement, HH.

People may not remember, but about 7-8 years ago when Leo was forming his government, he put HH on the backbench. She publicly cried on camera as he was making the announcement. Was incredibly childish.

He then proceeded to create an entire new ministry just to house her. Minister for irish heritage or some daft nonsense like that.

Sean Kelly not one bit happy on Drivetime and signalling he is not finished with it yet. Simon like Michael in FF in the bad books within FG.

Regime change in progress? Harris is incompetent and there are better people in FG.

I have doubts about this. I think McGuinness would indeed have been the warm / hot favourite before the TV debates began, but CC would surely have gathered major momentum no matter who she was up against - it could well have been a situation where they were neck and neck in the polls heading into the final week.

McGuinness and Connolly can appear presidential. Neither Humphreys or Gavin could. In an election where most voters will never meet the candidates, the impression that voters get from the media appearances matter.

A final pre-election thought - the media are all watching for Catherine to self-destruct in the final week like Sean Gallagher but Catherine has teflon qualities and a more likely scenario is that Heather's voters won't turn out. If Catherine looks a certainty on polling day, why would anyone bother to register a vote for Heather?

    IMG_6744.jpeg

Her letter to voters is the most anodyne election document I've ever read. It fails to mention the most important issue in a Presidential election - the candidate's qualifications for the highest office. Not a whisper about her only qualification for the role - 10 years as a Cabinet Minister.

If Heather is trounced next week, there will be a serious reckoning within FG. Simon's leadership is far less secure than Micheál's.

What specific challenge(s) was Connolly behind please? Can you source this claim please?

I get the distinct feeling he is hanging on by his fingernails.

Very evident he was kept well away from the campaign because FG know he is a toxic influence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,623 ✭✭✭jmcc

They don't need another Kanturk incident. Wouldn't be surprised to see Carroll MacNeill replacing Harris. Just on the FG politicians appearing with Humphreys, politicians all want to appear with winners. They rarely want to be associated with losers. Have any FG cabinet members been campaigning with Humphreys recently?

Before that. In the first televised presidential debate in the US. Kennedy looked young and energetic. Nixon hadn't shaved and looked tired. The people who watched the debate thought that Kennedy won. The people who listened to the debate on radio thought that Nixon won. Connolly is well able to use her media appearances. Humphreys is not.

Simon is way too bust trying to hide from Harvey's parents and save his own skin to try and do anything else. He got the confidence motion passed so its a succesful month for FFG.

Nixon was sweating profusely also and looked frazzled - that’s what swung it for Kennedy.

People rate GW Bush’s speeches much better than Bill Clinton’s - ON PAPER -Bush is simple language and short sentences - that’s why.

It’s a fascinating “science” - the science of influence- as much as I disagree with CC in so many ways - via radio or tv- she excels HH in so many ways - from a communication perspective

It's still accurate, whatever the electorate think. If your statements have the effect of undermining the defence of the victimised party and throwing shade on those working to help them, then you are,in effect, working for their enemy. Connolly's thoughtless statements aid anti-Ukraine sceptics and give them ammunition and help those working against it like the tankies in the Linke and the Sara Wagenknecht gang in Germany. She may say 'pro forma' that she condemns the invasion of Ukraine but her other claims have the vatniks rubbing their hands in glee.

CC getting a big pushback after claiming Elijah Burke kept shouting at her during that incident. He absolutely was not shouting at her

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,335 ✭✭✭✭Rjd2

Not saying Sean kelly would have won, but he would have performed much better, just bizarre how quickly they rallied behind her after Mairead pulled out and like FF with Gavin , it looks a monumental blunder considering both had passable alternatives.

Mediocre leaders chose mediocre candidates. Both are now facing potential leadership challenges.

Briefly “half” saw a campaign video for Heather. Her daughter was speaking about her mother and her love of helping people and cited one time she did the books for someone and she’s not even an accountant. I thought wtf , out of her entire life that’s all you can come up with. What a brainstorming session that was at FG HQ.
