It's finally out (in early access on PC)!

Played a few hours this evening and it's excellent - it's early access but seems a lot deeper and more substantial than Hades 1 was when it released in EA. It is more Hades - the basics will be immediately familiar (the roguelite structure, the drip-feed narrative in the hub area, the basic flow of gameplay). But it definitely is a sequel - kinda reminds me of a Disagea sequel in that it takes the basics and applies them to new settings and characters. The gameplay seems deeper and richer than before. Initially, there are a lot more items and variables to keep track of, but it quickly gets into the flow of things and you'll be picking the boons you want in no time. As before, the joy is in the insane synergies you stumble upon. And this is already delivering plenty on that front.

I've fought up to the second boss a few times and it's plenty challenging, but like the first game the power curve will bend to your advantage as the game progresses. I will say the biggest improvement appears to be the cast and special abilities, the latter of which seems a lot more versatile and useful than the equivalent in game one.

Seems great so far - early days but looking forward to playing a lot more in the coming months and when 1.0 finally releases :)

That's definitely what I'm most looking forward to in terms of gameplay. Most of the time those were just afterthoughts in picking my attacks.

Absolutely adore the first one, bit still think i'll wait till its feature complete. Looks to be a very hefty early access, but still have plenty of other games to play.

Have fought up to the fourth boss twice now, and yeah there's a whole lot of game here. Much, much deeper than the first game's Early Access launch and in some ways even the 1.0 release. In particular, the in-between run hub area offers a lot more options to engage with, and the build system is nice and flexible thanks to the new tarot card system and weighted skill slots.

It's really excellent. Pretty much everything has clicked into place now - new currencies etc… - and very pleased with how everything's flowing. The weapon synergies can get even wilder and more broken this time around, which is only a good thing. Only played through runs with two weapons so far, but have unlocked two more so looking forward to trying them and seeing the potential there.

Really enjoying this. Sister blades are my favourite weapon so far but just after unlocking the Flames. Still trying to get a handle on everything but can consistently beat the first boss now, have only managed to get to the second boss once though.

Is this fully playable now or is it still very Early Access? Dying to play it but was waiting but there is sweet f all to play this Christmas so this would be ideal, the first is one of my all time greats.

Needed to try something else before jumping into Act 3 of Silksong so 1.0 arrived at just the right time here.

I'd played around a dozen hours of early access, so was pretty far in already, but have now beaten Chronos once and got to the top of 'the surface' route once. Really, really loving it - it's been a few years since I played Hades 1, but it feels like they've increased the capacity for creating really delightfully broken builds here.

Have had particularly good runs with the Umbral Flames. In my successful Chronos run I basically had a collection of boons that gave me infinite mana for special attacks, as the attacks would refresh the mana automatically. In a really good surface run last night I had a special attack that hit enemies like a bomb, though needed a bit more maintenance as each attack took so much more mana and required frequent manual refreshes. It helped that I had a bonus special that turned non-boss enemies into sheep - and that recharged basically once every few seconds due to the amount of mana I was burning through :P

Anyway, it's great being back playing Hades, and have hit that point of the game with plenty of upgrades where you really have an opportunity to hit very, very hard. Level design is fantastic and really varied, though some bosses can be pretty punishing. Dizzying amount of stuff to do as well.

Have it downloaded to Deck, will get some time to play it over the weekend. Really looking forward to it, have heard nothing but positive things.

I've nearly beaten the story. I have to say, I didn't really like Hades 1. I beat it a good few times, but I found its combat overly mashy and reliant on dash striking everywhere, which compounded the deep frustration and sense of repetition when you were dying a lot. It felt like there was nowhere when it came to player expression, which is a really bad thing for a roguelike to have as a problem, so expectations were low with this one. But the changes they've made to the combat, where you're a sort of quasi-zoner mage style but with some melee options also, just adds some real diversity of flavour to its combat that was missing in the first one

Also, the fact that you have two runs you can do, up or down, make just as big an impression. So I'm much more into this. I've gotten a 24 fear clear of the surface, which is the thing you use to make 'vows' to make the game harder, so I have a 32 fear attempt of the underworld to do next. Everything is just massively improved imo

It's hard to single out a particular weapon. I've had fun with the Circe aspect which creates a laser between you and your familiar, which can be great at high difficulties for burning away some of the protections enemies have. I did a good run with Black Coat, which is a missile-launching jetpack which can block attacks. I had another good one with this skull which launches projectiles all around you and synergises really well with 'rush' builds, making great use of the new sprint ability to deal damage without swinging your weapon around

Got a bit of time with this. Made it past the first boss and into the second area. Starts to become a little more bullet-hell than I remember the first game being, but not a bad thing either. You really have to move rather than just stand and poke.

Starting to get a bit more attuned to what the various resources are for and how to optimise runs, but going to take a few more runs to really start seeing what I should be aiming towards.

Beat Chronos on around my 30th run (and second time reaching him), similar enough to Hades 1 but about 3 or 4 of those runs were going up rather than down.

Definitely owe this run to Hephestus' ability that adds 400 boom damage to your standard attack every 10 or so seconds, because through some poms and other boons, I upgraded it enough that it was doing that 400 damage every 2 seconds which was huge.

Mostly been using the Umbral Flames and just holding the attack button, and using arcana cards and other abilities to give me more magick so I can keep channelling the attacks. Only issue with it is you can end up targeting adds or other enemies you don't want instead of bosses or guardians. Just gotta keep dashing to re-target.

Might switch to going up for a few runs. Defeated the first boss there but had so little health when I got to the second boss that it was over almost instantly.

You can get that boom to proc on attack (2 seconds) and special (4 seconds I think) and pair it with a magma boom that does crazy damage.

I think I'll buy it again for switch 2 for portable play.

Finished the story over the weekend. Terrific overall - just loved how broken some builds could get. Still a few times I ran into situations where the power curve just wasn’t quite enough to get to the end, but usually there was more than enough options to adapt or improvise.

The surface route is terrific fun - two routes with tonnes of choices followed by rapidly increasing tension in the final two. Darren Korb’s score really builds to a wonderful crescendo there too.

Umbral Flames were definitely my favourite overall (love the ‘refill mana when you attack’ builds particularly), though had some great runs with the backpack and the spear too. Haven’t tried all that much with the axe or skull, but there’s lots of post-game content to dip back into so will certainly be giving some of them a go.

I did enjoy my run using the ‘activate ‘x’ arcana when you defeat a Guardian’ card so would like to have another few runs with that as well.

Have the Down route pretty well sussed at this stage and got the 5 completions of it, so now focusing on the Up route. Definitely feels a good bit tougher. Second boss in particular is a pain in the hole (though in fairness, I thought that of the second boss on the other route too before I started getting used to them).

Not sure how much of the endgame content I'll do. Likely similar to Hades 1 where I'll complete the general story stuff and then just dip in and out of the game periodically. I also probably should be trying out other weapons but just really love the Umbral Flames.

Eris can be tricky, though I found freeze boons make her a lot easier to manage. She does telegraph her attacks but if you do get in the way of one of her shots - which can easily happen when she has a long aiming wind-up - she can do a lot of damage quickly.

That said, the third boss of the surface route is the one that could put a premature end to quite a few runs for me. Hits like a brick. Even if I eked out a win sometimes his hard hits left me with limited health / no death defiances to finish the run - and the final stage contains a few hard-hitting mini bosses where you need all the health you can get.

Only reached the third boss once for the first time last night. Was doing relatively well even though I went in with only about half health and no Death Defiances (thanks to the second boss). But then he pulled out this AoE attack which in fairness, I can see now what I was supposed to do to avoid it, but first time seeing it and not knowing what to do, it just absolutely lamped me.

That the attack when he telegraphs multipe attacks in a row?

It should be easy to avoid - he tells you what to do! - but when I'm in the zone as much as I usually am in a Hades run the sudden change of pace sometimes melts my brain :P

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,681 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Yeah, admittedly I may have missed him saying what to do (TV on in the background, volume was down kinda low), but when it was showing the attack patterns on the ground I was trying to avoid those, but then realised I was in one and didn't get hurt by it, and then actually got hit by the attack.

In fairness sometimes even knowing what to do doesn't help. I don't know how many times fighting the Sirens where the drummer is doing the AoE attacks, I'll continuously dodge right into where I know the next set of AoEs are going to be, and instead of avoiding one hit like I'm trying to, I get hit by every single one of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 940 ✭✭✭one armed dwarf

What I do there is go into the first safe spot, and then say out loud the other two spots (top, middle, etc). That helps drill the pattern in for me, for some reason. Same then with the second variant, where it's 5

Prometheus is probably the hardest boss to learn in the game I think, or up there anyway. There's stuff that's executionally more difficult but less frustrating, if you come from an MMO background then it's sort of a familiar style of fight

I got a 32 fear clear last night, with Vow of Rivals 4. The buffed version of Chronos was a slog, I took 417 damage but had a build with healing so I managed it with decent health to spare. With a more 'normal' build I'd have died. I'd like to try again and clean up that fight, as well as the third one. It's full of lots of things to trip you up, instakills, time-stop bubbles, ambiguous openings and screen clutter galore

Postgame spoilers, dunno how to embed in a spoiler block, sorry

Beat Prometheus there on my second try. Not too bad, more runs should help get used to his attacks. Made it to the final boss on the Up route but couldn't beat him.

Struggling with final boss on surface route. Final phase seems to last for ages and it's always the orbs which bounce off the rear wall then do small AOEs which get me because it's so hard to properly judge where they're landing (plus when you're avoiding other attacks too).

Getting more used to Eris & Prometheus which is helping, but also kind of waning on the game a bit as I do want to move on to other games.

Took a break for a few weeks. Finally managed to beat Typhon on my second attempt back. Still a pain in the hole of a boss fight. Not sure how much I can be bothered doing it multiple more times to get the full ending.
