He seems to be racing for Ireland out of spite!

I suppose it's better than EPO.

Just had a look on Ticketmaster, there's still loads of tickets available for the Monday night live show.

It looks like they may have overestimated their popularity.

Top two levels have barely sold at all. I predict an urgent temporary installation of some black curtains.

I wonder will Dion Fanning be in the doghouse for the next while, after his silent performance during Joe Brolly’s latest disgrace

Dion is a tool, eager to take a withering cut at someone when they aren’t afforded any right of reply but crickets when Brolly is in full flow

These are users who feel that Gavin has been harshly treated in this affair, I'm not sure there's much utility trying to invoke logic here.

€50 is too much and fúck going on a Monday night

If I was near it I'd be happy with a Monday night, less chance of drunken gobsh1tes shouting nonsense.

    I agree on both counts.

The poor ticket sales explain the embarrassed vibe I picked up during the week as they jokingly tried to shill Monday night as the best night of the week for going out.

    Lessons learned hopefully.

podcast is now just a money making exercise for McDevitt and Murph

    Turning into corporate shills.

I would guess the idea was to have a bit of atmosphere by putting it between the two Ireland matches, and maybe pull in some people who will be travelling up in Dublin anyway for the second match the following night, as when they scheduled it the expectation was that we'd be in real contention facing into the Armenia home game. I bought a ticket back then, because I love the idea of a show smack dab in the midst of the two internationals (and would expect a lineup to reflect that), though who knows if the results and poor sales will have led to them changing course. I hope not.

I find the Monday thing a bit funny… I dunno, to me any week night is the same as any other if there's something I want to go to. I'd rather a weekend, sure, but Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday makes no odds to me.

I would have thought exiting the Irish times, setting up a podcast, and charging a €5 for it kinda indicated they were in it for the money alright.

I’m sorry but what billionaires do you know that both travel up the day before match and can afford a completely optional night in a Dublin hotel? There’s no way this could have been their logic.

Ken's self-righteous anger about that prick of a ref was gold.

Some speculation today in the Indo that Second Captains could be taking on the new RTE sports slot at 6pm.

Hopefully that's nonsense like much of the Indo's reporting usually is.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 5,194 Mod ✭✭✭✭GoldFour4

honestly it was my first thought when I saw the 6pm slot. Knowing the existing relationship with RTÉ and that they had wanted an earlier slot with newstalk

Now the biggest question mark in the new schedule line-up centres on the sports show that Monahan promised would be announced for weekday evenings.

This weekend, a source told the Sunday Independent there is intense interest in what RTÉ will unveil for that slot.

“Speculation is rife that Second Captains are in talks with RTÉ,” said the insider. The team specialises in podcasts and radio and already has a weekend show, Second Captains Saturday, on Radio 1.

But money could prove to be a major sticking point in any negotiations, given that RTÉ has a pay cap in place. According to 2023 accounts for Second Captains Ltd, the directors that year shared a pay pot of €817,000.

The company’s accounts showed that Eoin McDevitt, Ken Early, Ciarán Murphy, Simon Hick and Mark Horgan were each paid €149,000 for work carried out in 2023. The five also shared an additional €72,000 in pay to directors in the same year, an average of €14,400 each.

When contacted by the Sunday Independent this weekend and asked if Second Captains was in line to take over in the sports slot, two members of the team said: “No comment.”

One media insider said there are ways RTÉ could get around the money issue.

“Doing the show as an independent production would mean they could get access to all the Second Captains team without having to do individual staff contracts,” they said. “It’s like buying a pre-agreed package of presenters and production for an agreed fee. It is a great way to avoid the scrutiny of the published pay reports.”

In 2013, the same team, who produced Off The Ball, left Newstalk and set up Second Captains.

The 'No comment' from two of them would suggest they are in talks at the very least.

Was thinking a while ago if they suddenly went back to the old Newstalk slot it would take me time to re-adjust to it, instead of listening when I felt like it, I hear bits and pieces of Game On it's not bad, would rather the lads stuck with the podcast.

it would probably result in a lot more content which is a good thing. I would assume the podcasts then ends or merges with RTE ?

Is it feasible to combine the two. I wouldn't have thought so.

yeah, it seems so. No equity in the company yet. Probably one day if he hangs around

Ugh, really hope they don't move. There's no chance I'd listen to the radio in the evening. I'm sure they'd have some sort of listen back feature, but I love the way it is now. They've created something special.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,869 ✭✭✭cmac2009

Yeah, podcast would end but presume they'd have a podcast of the Rte show available.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,351 ✭✭✭Did you smash it

personally I thought their off the ball was a superior product to second captains.

Had better audience interaction and could react to live sport.

Why would the lads want to go back to working in the evenings? That's why they left OTB/Newstalk
