If FF & FG are right then it's the kind of 'right' the British Labour party would love to be in a position to model themselves on.

The left in Ireland are mainly politically correct parties who like producing alternative budgets that are extravagant because they're well aware they won't be called on to implement them.

There's little or no difference between FF & FG as regards most things, FG likes to project an image of fiscal rectitude, FF an image of empathy. They're different like Pepsi and Coke are different.

The Presidency is between the pacifist and the presbyterian.

No. FF under Martin has moved to the Right to be more like FG. In doing so it has abandoned the centre and centre Left that it once occupied. SF has been moving into that part of the political spectrum since MLMcD became its leader. This election has accelerated the identification in the minds of the electorate of FF and FG being indistinguishable and effectively the same party. Does FFG have enough votes to elect Humphreys and will FF grassroots voters turn out and vote for the FG candidate because of Martin's incompetence?

Don’t even think for a minute that any sane person will believe Catherine Connolly is centre left 😀

I think if Martin wanted FF voters to vote for Humphreys, he would have been better off saying he would vote for Connolly !

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Sorry P, you've little credibility left after your championing of the neo fascist in Venezuela yesterday, must have been disheartening for you to see her dedicate her 'prize' to her fellow neo fascist in Washington...but judging by some of your posts here, maybe not!

The 'Syria' story is a story because it can be spun to try and damage CC, TD uses allowance to fund trip, shock horror..The entire framing of it is so laughable...

This election could be forcing a split between FF grassroots and Martin and his supporters in DE.There is a distinct possibility that some FFers will vote for Connolly rather than Humphreys.

Ah, so you finally acknowledge Veneuzela. She is not a neo-fascist (I would think obviously) but you have no commentary on Connolly suggesting Ireland should continue to recognise Maduro? It is not exactly surprising given that her close colleague Daly, whom she supported wholeheartedly, went as an "independent observer" for their recent election and SF were at the inauguration. But it looks pretty silly now.

.”There is a distinct possibility that some FFers will vote for Connolly rather than Humphreys.”

Indeed - and there’s an equal distinct possibility that a significant number of traditional Labour voters will vote HH

'Clearly on the Right' would be supporting Maria Steen or Conor MacGregor. Let's not remove words of their meaning.

The problem is that the chatshow format (TWIP/VM/RTE) isn't really a debate. The candidates don't get a chance to debate. It is all about the host(s).

Presidential election could not have gone much worse for Martin. Another major error and his position as leader is untenable surely

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

The aging champagne socialists in the IT who have been advocating that the SocDems merge with Labour? The FF/FG type Labourites like Alan Kelly who fancy themselves more as "social democrats" than traditional Working Class Labour?

The way things are going for Labour is that Labour is on 4% and the SocDems are on 8% in the opinion polls. The SocDems are stronger in the younger demographics and Labour is much weaker. Labour didn't have the numbers to nominate its own candidate. That was a wake-up call for Labour.

It has been hoping for a resurrection since 2016 (It was laughable to see some of its supporters in the media claiming that it would get 15 seats or so in that GE.) Labour backing Connolly was an acknowledgement of its new position as a fringe party. It may also have been one of the luckiest decisions taken by Bacik if Connolly wins and a combined Left emerges after this presidential election.

    ”than traditional Working Class Labour?”

That flavour of Labour hasn’t been around for decades now

Anyone know if there's any opinion polls due this weekend?

The FF grassroots may be realising that Martin is not the leader to restore FF to the 40% or so support level that it once enjoyed. The deal to get rid of Martin may already have been done.

An abrupt removal would make FG look like the senior party in government and that's something that FF cannot risk. The last Irish Times/Ipsos-B&A poll had FG around 17%. If FF starts to move down to that level, then things could get iffy for the FF/FG/Lowry coalition.

Even though some people think that FF and FG transfer well, the reality is that FF and FG are increasingly fishing in the same small poll for votes. This is why this election is so important for FF and FG. It is their last chance to give the impression that they are both discinct major parties. If they cannot, then one of them risks being Labourised. They will still form a major bloc on the Right but the numbers will be different.FG had 76 seats in 2011. It now has 38 seats. Many of those lost seats went to FF.

Some FFers may be fuming about Martin's incompetence. They won't want to vote for Humphrets and give FG its first president ever. The FF ministers appoited by Martin may support him for the moment and announce that they are voting for Humphreys. The FF grassroots is a completely different thing and they are the ones who may or may not vote. If they don't, Humphreys could end up on the core FG vote.

"That is FACT, not opinion." !!??

"but she is a terrorist to me." !!??

Make your mind up is it a FACT you can prove with a link where it has been said? Or your opinion.

If your opinion, declaring it is a fact here without proof doesn't make it true?

I don't really care what others believe and it doesn't matter even if I believe it to be true as well, It just may not be acceptable on this site. I don't go around saying a certain politician is just a big orange buffoon, just because I may believe it doesn't make it true. Luckily I don't make decisions what is not and is not allowed on here.

@Larbre34 "semantics" maybe so. But up to @blanch152 to backup the statement of fact with proof?

Note: Took a break from my laptop for dinner and only not getting back to the thread. So a delayed response.
Had another reply drafted earlier but deleted and changed it.

Amarach wsa polling this week. I think that they do some polls for the Irish Mail on Sunday. It might also have been private polling by political parties.

Really appreciate a heads up on any poll today/tomorrow. It will be interesting to get a read of where the country lies at present.

Business post have one, one of their reporters (or maybe their editor?) was on Anton savage this morning but wouldn't give anything away. Annoyingly the fieldwork started before Gavin pulled out, so numbers will be a bit skewed…

What's this 'finally' business? I'm merely commenting on your championing of the neo fascist Machado yesterday, there is simply no other way to describe her - I note you have no commentary on her dedicating it to the neo-facist in the WH? You seem to channel your inner Roosevelt on these matters, like so many centrist hypocrites - authoritarians are OK as long as they're on 'our' side…As I said, your credibility was shot yesterday, no coming back now!

I've a 19 year old daughter in second year in college.

There are 28 students on the course and they were discussing the election. 1 of them is illegible to vote. 27 of them intend to vote for Catherine Connolly because she can do keepie uppies. That's the sum total of the campaigns to date and how they've landed with the youth.

    What a waste.

That would be two problematic polls in a row. It had one last month where it had Gavin and Kelleher as candidates. Gavin pulled out last Sunday. It would be a bit early for RedC fieldwork. It uses a panel based approach.

I don't think the actual fact that she was OK with having a convicted dissident 'republican' working in the Houses of the Oireachtas straight out of jail and unvetted is at all acceptable. Not only was she OK with this, she actively subverted the security procedures of the Houses of the Oireachtas.

On that basis Mary Lou should brush up on her ball skills - she’ll be a shoe-in next election

Ya, and surprising too that a poll going in paper tomorrow started gathering data a week ago...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,538 ✭✭✭jmcc

If it was surveying up to yesterday, it might have captured some of that rapist smear. It would be interesting to see if it impacted on FG as well as Humphreys. RedC uses a panel based online approach. Ipsos-B&A uses face to face polling. There should be an Irish Times/Ipsos-B&A poll due in the next week or so.
