    So happy for Shane.

    A place in golf history.

I hope he has many more wins and Ryder Cup appearances, but so far, what a career he's had!! The manner in which he got that crucial half last night was awesome. I know sometimes his temperament sometimes lets him down but he's a true Irish golfing legend. His golfing CV is the stuff of dreams.

What a match play competitor Shane Lowry is hey!?

In the 4 ball match on Saturday versus the team USA go to men, Justin Thomas & Cameron Young, Shane Lowry was simply stellar.

He put up with all the horrible abuse, vitriol and crowd loutishness, while he shepherded a visibly tiring McIlroy to win a simply brilliant match against the feisty american pair. That was mighty!!

This was also after McIlroy and Lowry had also secured a dramatic half in the fading sunlight, against Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay, on Friday. No easy feat!!

And then on Sunday he actually shot a sparkling 64, finishing with 3,3,3,3 over the final 4 holes to brilliantly tie his match against the world no 3, and secure the Ryder Cup for Team Europe...

That was a mighty, magnificent & memorable Ryder Cup from Shane Lowry, a great Irish major winner & the former Open & Irish Open Champion.

    Simply Golden!!! :)

P.s. Lowry now joins Eamonn D'Arcy, Christy O'Connor (jr), Philip Walton & Paul McGinley as the latest & greatest Irish player to sink the final winning putt to secure the Ryder Cup!!

What a wonderful legacy hey!? And another great & proud day for Lowry, Ireland & team Europe..... Great days indeed!!!

True to form, McGinley mentioned some (but not all) of these names in the US tv coverage. Made sure to include his own name in the list though!

So what!? The man has done this big deed also. It's perfectly relevant to mention your name along with some of the other Irish players who have sunk the winning putt also imho, as it's entirely relevant, and an amazing feat, and all from such a small country, to be providing all these fabulous players holing out to win Ryder Cups for Europe 🇪🇺!!

I really don't get all this angst & anti-McGinley feeling - it stinks of begrudgery & petty minded jealousy tbh. He was a superb, winning Ryder Cup Captain himself, as well as a winning player, who holed the winning putt for Europe to win a Ryder Cup also. They are the facts. Simples.

An Irish man had just putted out to retain the Ryder Cup again. So McGinley mentions how remarkable a feat this is & was, and that several other Irish players including himself had also earned this outstanding honour over the years. This is something to be celebrated imho. Especially being Irish. So kindly try to leave the begrudgery in your kit bag maybe!?

    Oops, thanks for that.

You see there are so many Irish guys who've sunk the winning putt at this stage - it's actually extraordinary! No wonder we love the Ryder Cup so much!!

Hate to be pedantic about this but the only ones that can strictly be compared to what Shane did are Philip Walton, Paul McGinley and GMac.

Eamonn and Christy Jnr won vital and memorable points in '87 and '89 but it was Seve at Muirfield and Jose Maria Canizares at the Belfry that secured the winning and retaining points.

Christy's 2 iron and what followed on 18 at the Belfry is still my absolute favourite Ryder Cup moment ever. Magic.

That's good to clarify that @Adiago 2, thank you. So the 4 Irish players that have sunk the crucial putt to retain or win a Ryder Cup are Philip Walton, Paul McGinley, GMac & now, Shane Lowry.

That's a fabulous legacy for golfers from such a small island like Ireland to close out the premier intercontinental competition in golf for Team Europe 🇪🇺 so often. Another great day on Sunday & another fantastic addition to the proud Irish legacy at the Ryder Cup.

    100% Daithi 👍

And it would be wrong not to mention Eamonn and Christy when talking about Irish Ryder cup heroes.

To get back to Shane though, what he did at the weekend was phenomenal to even get to the position of having that putt to retain the cup.

Yeah, to shoot a 64 and finish 3,3,3,3 was simply sensational.

Funnily enough, despite his team members losing out at the 18th one after another, I was always pretty confident about Shane. He had played the closing holes exceptionally well in the Saturday 4balls, when he carried McIlroy on that back 9 to win their feisty match against the American go to pairing, of Justin Thomas & Cameron Young. That was a serious scalp & Lowry was simply magnificent. So come Sunday, though he had a mountain to climb against the world no 3, there was no one more confident & full of gusto to be able to bring the cup back to Europe. Pure class!!!

I dunno, I thought he was goosed after the tee shot on 18. Even with the bunker shot (which was superb), he was still a 1 in 4 shot to get something from the match. Absolute balls on the guy, though. Fair play. Must admit I was a bit leery about him coming into to RC. Delighted to be wrong.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,541 ✭✭✭daithi7

Yeah I know what you mean @moycullen14, but jeez his approach irons were simply scintillating, he was on a lightning hot streak of 3s, and he was simply a man on a mission. A joy to watch!!

P.s. BTW Lowry's tee shot down 18 was down the middle, it was Henley who drove into the bunker.

P.p.s so delighted that you were wrong (twice) too!! ;)

Left his game in New York basing on the first round in Spain

Not sure why he's even bothering to play this event. Go spend time with your family lad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,705 ✭✭✭Trampas

Sure people want them to play in Europe and when he does you’re wondering why he’s bothered playing here. Can’t win. He’s off to India next week with Rory and co. I assume there’ll be a few sponsor events they’ll turn up for

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,126 ✭✭✭paulos53

I think he has to play or risk losing his tour card. Excluding majors, he has only played 2 regular tour events this year.
I don't know what the current rules are but I seem to remember that it used to be a minimum of 4 events.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,476 ✭✭✭MayoSalmon

The season is over lad..nobody is taking any interest in this nor India...

Isn't the race to Dubai yet to be played!?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 32,421 ✭✭✭✭Mars Bar

Yes, there is Abu Dhabi Championship followed immediately by the race to Dubai in Dubai

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,705 ✭✭✭Trampas

Race to Dubai is still on and he won’t be there as things stand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,705 ✭✭✭Trampas

His open win is good enough for another while for tour card and I think he was made an honorary member with the open win

I would think his Open win means that he doesn't need to worry about his ranking each year. I doubt it excludes him from playing the minimum number of events.

McIlroy had the same issue a few years ago and he is also an Honorary member.
