You get used to the nice things 🙂

I would miss the powered seats, mainly because of multiple driver profiles and a 1 car family

The glass roof because the extra light helps with my SADness

The matrix lights coz I don't have to remember to dim lights any more and I do a lot of driving down the Styx.

Acoustic glass for the peace and quiet

The heated seats coz of winter mornings but I guess if the seats ain't leather this is less of an issue.

    I think that's it.

its basically all the things that make it feel like a nice car to be in imo

    • no leather seats - id want these
    • No power front / 'single axis' seat control - a must for us
    • simpler headliner/trim
    • no cooled/heated seats - and these
    • no ambient lighting - and this
    • no rear touch screen - this is used a lot on my car
    • no touch screen rear vent controls (manual)
    • no premium audio (less speakers)
    • no coat hooks
    • no power rear folding seats - nice to have
    • no oscillating front vents
    • no optional tow hitch
    • no puddle lights
    • no glass roof - interior will be glum without it
    • no power folding mirrors - must have on a wide car
    • no acoustic glass - must have imo
    • no front light bar - front looks ok without
    • no rear body light lamp - rear wont look as good tho
    • no matrix headlights - bummer

The Paddy spec hit the US 😀

This should improve the 2nd hand market. If I needed to save 6k, I'd go for a 2 year old "premium" model over this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,153 ✭✭✭✭unkel

I wouldn't. The depreciation on a 2 year old standard car would be far higher than the depreciation on a same value brand new paddy spec one. I would miss heated seats and automatically adjusted seats based on profile (2 main drivers), but I would not put much value to either

there’s a possibility it has the opposite effect and hurts the market, if people view it as just another “model Y”, then you can get into a new Y for the same price as a 1-2yo current model - and people generally choose new over secondhand when the pricing is similar, due to better finance offers.

Another thing to consider is that with the pricing inevitably falling between the current 3 & Y, it will cannibalise sales into the middle from both.

Looks like it'll proably 5k cheaper here than the current Y, range of about 520km, it's live now on the US website and their base prices match ours in all but the performance. It's still 40k though.

Any danger it will pull down used prices of the standard Y?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,328 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Not in the short term i'd say, there's a cheaper model 3 as well, looks like it could be about 35k here, that might have a bigger effect.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 60,153 ✭✭✭✭unkel

Of course. Depending on how cheap it actually is

Not just a cheap Model Y but also a cheap Model 3 by the looks of it. And they keep the heated front seats. Anybody want to guess their on the road prices in Ireland? €33k for Model 3 and €38k for Model Y? Lot of car for the money whatever it will be

that would certainly have a negative effect on the secondary market - it would be 2022 all over again.

What’s the range of the two new cars, and is there a material weight drop from all the things stripped out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,328 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

just flicking through the American site you can finance the new one but you can’t lease it, maybe that just a timing thing.

Their monthly payments are more than ours but you can drive out the door in a model 3 performance with just 3k down payment. Why does ireland have such high down payment in comparison?

”The most interesting change to the interior by far is the glass roof, which only exists on the outside of the car. Yes, you read that correctly; Tesla installed a proper headliner and a bunch of sound-absorbing material behind it, sealing occupants off from the panoramic glass above. The company claimed this was more cost-efficient than designing and installing a fixed metal roof.”

ah here 😀 - I can already see lots of retro fixes popping up to undo this and reveal the pano roof again

Yeah I dont have one but I still dont want to see the excessive depreciation headlines for EVs again. Time for a stable marketplace.

I suppose it's the same as paying for extras, you never see the money back, I'm definitely in that boat myself on my car. The used market probably uses price of base models as a baseline really.

We're in the middle of the most disruptive period in automotive history. I think you can forget about a stable marketplace!

You know what, you're right. Too much change/progress/grants/incentives/forced targets etc to be any way settled

Hang on, they removed the glass roof to cut costs by spending more money on materials to cover up the glass roof?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,954 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

I like the look of those seats better than the fake leather ones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,046 ✭✭✭JOL1

I know it sounds counterintuitive but they retained glass roof, as good terms from existing suppliers as opposed to introducing changes to their manufacturing line. The roof from inside is covered which helps with noise reduction (now single glazed as opposed to double) and more efficient as HVAC does not have to work as hard.

    That’s a bit of a reach surely.

why not just leave the pano as it was, and not have the additional materials costs

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,954 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

I think most people would sacrifice the road noise for the glass roof?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,046 ✭✭✭JOL1

Because the interior solid roof helps reduce interior noise as new variant no longer has double glazed galss and improves efficiency/range (I am not making it up that is what Tesla is saying on this point ) .

From the driver seat of the Model 3 it's easy to forget there's a glass roof above. But if I ever sit in the rear, I still get the "wow I can see up" feeling. But my passengers are generally so busy looking at their phones that they wouldn't notice either (and wouldn't miss the rear control screen for the same reason). So I think it's not a major loss. Though I agree it sounds silly to not reveal it if it is still there.

You realise the vast majority of leather seats nowadays are fake leather it's not a Tesla thing.

Sorry vegan leather is probably more esg friendly nomenclature

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,954 ✭✭✭✭TitianGerm

Yea I know that, I don't like leather seats at all. Don't have them at home and wouldn't have them in a car. I just find them uncomfortable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 21,589 ✭✭✭✭Cyrus

Can't see it helping residuals but at the same time I personally wouldn't be interested in one, it was the improvements from the previous y that interested me and the spec over and above the Audi I had, giving all that up wouldn't make it as interesting a proposition.

They were jealous of the BYD Seal 😂

Those owners said they don’t listen to FM anymore with online apps and DAB so it’s all good!

Me, I still switch to FM104 every morning 😂
