Started up Silent Hill f and had some dodgy PC port and just PC issues. First the game is quite graphically intensive so I wanted to turn the resolution down but couldn't because it defaults to the desktop resolution. I eventually figured it out but of course digital foundry don't cover ultra wide monitors and failed to mention that the game **** the bed on anything other than the default desktop resolution and just wants to stretch itself across the entire screen (after you get about 2 seconds of the game displaying properly).

Then I just had horrendous tearing even with v sync on which turned out to be and adaptive vsync just not working. I had the same issue with hollow Knight but amd control panel decided to reset itself.

Anyway eventually got it working at a steady 60fps but it doesn't feel like 60 fps. It's feels pretty awful, like bloodborne, because of the awful micro stutters from shader compilation. Not enough to destroy the game but it's annoying. Devs really need to start coming up with their own tech solutions for these things. They asked to be able to code to the metal, direct X and Vulcan gave them that power and they then find out they can't could shader compilation themselves.

First of all I doubt that many of those devs who asked for a more direct path to metal like 10 years ago are still around coding these games. Maybe some of them are, like those who made Doom The Dark Ages / id Tech 8, who doesn't suffer from this issue, runs well and loads almost instantly.

But given that Unreal 5 shader compilation is by far the worst and most prevalent issue today in PC gaming, Epic/MS/Nvidia should come together and find a solution that works for everyone. Maybe get that saudi sultan involved, have him do some good for a change, invite some engineers from all these companies, lock them in a room and let them out only after they come up with a solution :)

Not sure a bonesaw will help shader comp but it's worth a try.

Even a 40 minute shader comp step in can leave running while watching something like Sony games do is far better than what ever the hell unreal devs implement. Asynchronous shader comp doesn't work the way devs are using it, which is baffling as I'm sure they know this yet still implement it.

As they said with Borderlands 4, you need to suffer through ~15 minutes of bad stuttering and mini freezes, then it gets better. Async shader compilation won't work without some sort of a pre-caching mechanism.

Something can be implemented in the Nvidia / AMD driver app, and hook into the installed games to compile shaders even without starting the game or it's DRM / launcher - something needs to be done, and I'm surprised neither Epic nor Nvidia isn't driving anything, as this really make PC gaming look very bad.

It's just baffling but also telling that it's devs that haven't their own engine that have this issue. I mean call of duty ghosts had a shader pre-comp step and that was at the start of the PS4 generation.

Are shaders compiled on demand ... when needed for a scene or before the game is played at all. I would have a assumed the latter, but looks like it's dynamic.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,074 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Compiled a they are needed and also on the cpu so in the most inefficient way possible. As far as I'm aware this is the way unreal does it by default but it's always been a "this is a fallback and really bad so please don't use it and write your own code" but it hasn't stopped developers just using it. Some games like Sony developed ones allow you to pre compiled them all in one big batch. Can take 40-60 minutes sometimes but it means the game doesn't run like ****.

On console since there's only one sku they can pre compiled with each patch.

Supermarket Simulator has come to Game Pass. Will any of you be check it out?

If a game's title is the word 'Simulator' preceded by a mundane noun or verb, the odds are high that I for one will not be checking it out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,116 ✭✭✭Cordell

I'm not sure a shader compiler that runs on GPU is a viable option, as in faster than on CPU, compilers being such complex code with lots of states and branches. And as you said compiling shaders is nothing new, so it's more a UE5 problem than anything else.

The only good simulator is power wash simulator.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 36,618 ✭✭✭✭Penn

Surgeon Simulator was good craic, especially in VR.

But even just a quick search for 'Simulator' on the PS Store shows an absolute slew of utter scutter games, like OF Model Simulator, Hentai Shop Simulator, Collectible Cars Shop Simulator, and Sex Shop Supermarket Simulator.

I mean, eewww... what sort of freak wants to play a game about running a shop selling toy collectible cars.…

I don't know, what kind of freak plays power wash simulator when they can simply go outside and power wash … everything?

That happened me yesterday when I stood too close to the scanner.

Surprising fact of the day that I'm probably finding out years after everyone else. Denise Gough (of Andor fame) was the voice of Yennefer in Witcher 3.

Just every big company has no balls or backbone.

Let's cancel a game about with a black protagonist and make a new assassin's creed starring Sydney Sweeney as an assassin in apartheid South Africa fighting against the white genocide.

    Wearing certain jeans.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a Fortnite skin. Especially with the famous fortnite "wiggle".

Well. I'm assuming there hasn't been one. I'd actually have no clue if there was, other than I'd expect it to be mentioned in some political context.

Got into some combat sections of silent Hill f last night. It kind of highlighted for me that the general moaning 'gamer' populace are morons.

It's definitely tough, you can only really take one hit but just because it's tough doesn't mean it's got dark souls combat. You are basically putting yourself in danger to bait an attack to counter. It's pretty much the same premise as project zero/fatal frame.

I had to figure out which post you meant. It's Yennifer for those who didn't figure it out.

Your link was dead but in my quoted post it shows the correct link.

I have no idea why my link resolved to an emoji. But imma just leave it there for the craic

I gave cloud streaming a retry on game pass to see if the upgrades are any good. Gave cyberpunk a go, it's actually pretty good. Very smooth, no pixelation like there used to be and although there is every so slight lag, you forget about it after about 10 seconds. I'm actually impressed. The only issue is you're playing a Series S game. I would expect if they are saying its now out of Beta it would need to be at least Series X quality, but really they need to start offering PC specs like nVidia to make it worthwhile. Because no matter how good it is, Series S is not going to stop me simply installing the game.

I spotted The Ascent on the list. I love that game. Think I'm getting sucked into to a 2nd playthrough 😄 This is the type of game where you don't need to bother installing it. Especially now with the bitrate, resolution and fps improvements. I'd say its probably as good as it would be if I were to install it.

Some positive signs. But still a bit to go to make streaming a worthwhile consideration in the game pass tiers.
