I went to pre-order so will see when they come out to install it if they intend using the same poles that the wire gets pulled down numerous times a year by farmers if so it will be Starlink for me. There is a closer pole so if they use it I should be ok. These are the best pictures I can get if anyone knows if this is anything to do with fibre?

Yes, that looks like a fibre DP and the taut wire between poles the fibre line.

Thanks, that pole is 15 metres away from the one in my garden whereas the one that keeps getting pulled down is 40 metres down the road to the left so if it comes in off that one I might just be sorted with a bit of luck.

Is picture 2 the DP above? Or do you mean the cabinet?

How far away, distance wise, is the DP on the pole that will connect your house?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 10,516 ✭✭✭✭con747

If you mean the pole in picture 2 above it's 15 metres away from the pole in my garden which is a further 25 metres from the house. Whereas the old copper wire for the landline was coming in from a pole further down the road which sagged across the road and was constantly being pulled down.

You're most likely allocated a slot on the nearest DP to your house, the fibre line will follow the easiest route to connect you .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 10,516 ✭✭✭✭con747

Ok, I haven't a clue about any of it so will just wait and see when they come out, if it's from the closest pole well and good but if from the other pole it will be cancelled. Thanks.

Is the pole in your pics above, wired from the pole down the road?

Does that pole down the road also have a DP (the black box with a coil of cable around it)?

You mention that the copper cable has sagged and is constantly being pulled down. The fibre cable would be a separate line and they are usually pulled very taut so wouldn't likely be sagging across the road.

It seems to be wired to the the other pole down the road which is leaning over so the wire that was connecting my old copper landline was from it to a pole in my garden on the opposite side of the road, so if the pole closer to me in the picture in my last post is where my service will come from I should be ok. Here's as good a picture as I could get of the bad pole down the road.

    PXL_20251008_124351457.jpg

and below is the closer pole I hope service will be from which is only 15 metres from the pole in my garden across the road but far closer pole to pole. That leaning pole is 25/30 metres from the pole in the garden so always sagged and was pulled down regularly.

Yeah. The bad pole doesn't seem to have a DP, so you would likely be served from the nearer pole.

In my case the DP is on the roadside pole that also provided my, long since ceased, phone line. So the fibre follows the phone line into a neighbours field and then up to my house. The fibre line is strung much more tightly than the old copper cable.

Took a couple of days to get it actually activated as VF said the original order from April was never closed out.

Got it up and running last night. Speed test giving 560m. Happy with that!

Only issue is, I notice that the speed drops off a lot when you go into another room in the house, so looks like I will have to use my Mesh system still.

My timeline so far…….. It might be useful to anyone in the process

    • New poles - 10th March
    • Fibre on poles - 18th April
    • DP's- Distribution Points (Black boxes on poles) - 12th Aug
    • Pre-order- Open 29th Aug - But not EIR until 2 days later (Sky & Virgin open 1 week after pre-order)
    • Pre-Ordered with Eir 31st Aug
    • Ready to Connect 15th Oct (Exactly 45 Days after pre-order - That seems to be standard based on others timelines)

Anyone have a rough estimate on the wait for an appointment phone call to schedule and being connected?

An EIR manager told me yesterday that it should be 24hrs after Ready to connect but I have my doubts on that..

//It's a long process to work through - Especially with my previous provider Imagine terminating their service since Oct 1st as they try to move in the fibre business

You would think im nearing end game here for what should be a simple connection as everything in place for them..

UPDATE - I called Circet direct & got an appointment for 29th Oct

Ready to Connect doesn't necessarily mean your DP is live for connection.

In our case it was almost 3 weeks before our DP went live

So I had my Vodafone fibre installed recently.

Happy enough so far, getting the 500meg speed when sitting in the same room as the Gigabox, but it appears it's range of signal is poor overall. Move outside the room its in and the speed drops , go out to kitchen behind a solid wall and its in the 300s.

Checking out specs on the Gigabox, has it been around since 2018? If so, assume its Wifi5? Surely they could provide a newer router for their service.

I have since connected up a TP-Link Deco S4 mesh system around the house, a 3 unit system. Its helping but in the bedrooms the wifi speed test is showing around 200meg. Perhaps I need to upgrade the S4s to a newer mesh system to get 500meg all over the house?

You won't get 500Mb around the whole house as the mesh units are basically just repeaters, if they are not wired with ethernet. You can get mesh systems with a dedicated backhaul band but they can be quite expensive.

Try to place the additional mesh units halfway between where you need better signal and where the main unit is, so it has the best chance to improve things.

Have you removed the Gigabox completely and connected the main unit directly to the ONT? If you don't want to do that, you should place the TP-Link into "Access Point Mode".

No, the Gigabox is still connected to the ONT. And then I have the Gigabox hardwired to one of the S4 units.

Is this the best way to do it?

I also have a spare TP-link Archer C50 router, wondering would that be any better in place of the Gigabox?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 841 ✭✭✭NotShero

No that wouldn’t be ideal, you can connect a mesh unit directly to the ONT. There’s no need to put another router in between, the mesh units can act as a router.

    Select PPPoE

    Username - vodafone@vodafone.ie (or “Gigabox Serial Number”@vfieftth.ie)

    Password - broadband

Set VLAN ID 10 in VLAN/IPTV settings

Also, might it be a time to upgrade my S4 system, or should that be powerful enough for the house?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,914 ✭✭✭✭shmeee

I've the M4, same units basically but a bit bigger. 3 of them in the home, one is connected directly to the ONT. WiFi speeds in that room/area 300-500mbps.

The 2 other decos are a bit of a distance away and I am getting 100-200mbps in them areas.

House is quiet large at over 3500sq/ft with solid concrete walls.

More than enough for me at present until I eventually get a wired in mesh/access points.

As others said, only way to get best speed from units is to wire/ethernet them all together. No matter what units you have, if not wired you won't get max possible speed on units.
