Your probably right but I had to deal with Eir in one way or another for 30 years and I would not p!ss on them if they were on fire. Will give Digiweb another look.

Wake me up when it's all over.

Interesting. The guy who did my ONT install would install it on my forehead if that was my wish ;)

I also wanted it in the utility room at the very back of the house. He had no problem with it and that is what he has done for me. It was very smooth install. Very happy with that part.

Hey everyone, I'm with Digiweb on NBI FTTH broadband 500Mbps, paying 60 a month (That was the price when it first launched…) and now want to move to another provider. To switch, I need a UAN (8 digit number?) which apparently is listed at the top of the bill but I cant see a UAN. There is a:

    Customer Account Number

    UMR

    IVR payment code

The UMR number is basically my customer account number with 6 additional numbers

The IVR number is also a six digit number

Do I need to phone digiweb to get the UAN or is it somewhere on the bill but I just can't see it?

All help appreciated, I want to get away from Digiweb ASAP

I'm on SIRO but for me it's in the grey box at the bottom of the first page of the bill. It's not very obvious.

As @Glaceon said, I’m through SIRO also and it’s quite hidden in the grey box at the end of the first page of the bill.

Thanks @Glecon and @NotShero, I just checked and it yes I have the same stuff but with a NBI Line ID. That might be it but it is a long string of digits, definitely more than 8… I'll try it :)

I'm about to switch from Digiweb to another provider. The only reason for my switching is that I'm paying €60 per month for NBI FTTH 500 Mbps and that seems to be extremely expensive. Can anyone recommend which provider I should move to?

My choices appear to be Vodafone, Eir and PureTelecom

I use my broadband for working from home, Streaming up to 4 devices at one time and Gaming. However, I live in a large house, with the router in the utility room, meaning I have a TPLink Mesh setup in play (That constantly needs resetting but that's another story).

Digiweb provide the Fritzbox router which I believe is quite good but I presume the other providers would want to provide their own router?? I've not switched before, so might need guidance on that.

Yes that’s most likely it. Open Eir use the term UAN or CRN whereas the other access networks have their own numbers but are still referred to as a UAN.

You can connect your TP-Link mesh directly to the ONT, removing any ISP router. With Eir and Virgin Media you use DHCP/IPoE/Dynamic IP. With all the others, you’ll use PPPoE and the username and password of the provider which are all over Boards, just give it a quick Google. Then you just set VLAN ID 10 in IPTV/VLAN settings.

Okay, I had no idea you could do this!! I need to look in to it. Thank you. I might come back with more questions!

I see Eir have reduced down the price of their FTTH packages including 1GB NBI. They have 1GB for 39.99. It does still require a 2 year term but good to see the price reduction.

Some info for you. If I understand your situation correctly….

Some installers for NBI might try and getaway with locating the ONT on the inside wall of where the fibre meets the house. (Neighbour had this happen so he told the installer to leave, 2nd installer brought the fibre into the attic).
NBI contract includes a generous allowance per house for installations so I don't think they should be trying to "get away with" quick and dirty installs.

Another Neighbour felt he had no choice but to locate on the inside wall of the telecoms box as he had no way to pull fibre through to the attic.

If I were you, I would be thinking about using your existing cabling from the telecoms box through to your comms room as a pull cord to get the fibre to where you want it.
I had about 7 cat3 phone cables from the telecoms box through the attic to various points in the house (most end points were already converted to dual cat6 rj45 sockets so the cat3 was redundant)
I used the cat 3 to pull the fibre up the wall cavity to attic where I could then get it easily to where I wanted.
This was hard to do for a couple of reasons (the wall cavity was pumped & no conduit, cat 3 is not that strong and can break) But the installer was very obliging… perhaps because I was the one pulling the fibre up to the attic?
In the end, we I got the cable on the last attempt using 2 cat3 cables (all previous cables were broken or stuck). It was slow going through the insulation and jaggy bits on the cavity but sooo worth it!

If you have any specific questions, let me know.

So we have a NBI outage in the parish since 17:30 yesterday.

I rang Pure to make sure a fault was logged and found that they couldnt take it further due to me not using their router.
Fair enough I guess, but it threw up a potential issue going forward.
In this case the link layer appears fine so the ISP says "it looks OK from our end", surely they have tools for testing the data layer too?

Does anyone have any info on our ISPs engage NBI when there is a network issue? things like SLAs, severity levels (and definitions) that sort of thing?

one neighbour called Pure and was told it can take 2-5 days to resolve network issues.
I'm thinking if the fault is marked as effecting "everyone" the priority and speed to resolution will be better?

    Thanks for the reply ArrBee.

I know what you're saying but that isn't really my situation. The existing cable from telecomms box to the patch panel can't be used as draw wire. I wired it myself and know the route.

Theres no easy route back to the patch panel without clipping cables externally - which im not interested in.

Im banking on offering the installer a few quid to splice it a the box. If not ill get someone to splice of for me when they're done.

I see you ran a Cat 6 ethernet to it, did you?

You can bring in the Cat 6 to where they install the ONT and connect to it, to bring the connection to the patch panel to connect a router.

The ONT needs a socket. Is there a socket on the other side of the telecoms box, inside the house?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 906 ✭✭✭ArrBee

I was probably lucky that I could access my attic easily from where the cable comes up the cavity all the way to the comms cupboard.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 227 ✭✭ptogher14

By chance the other side of the wall has multiple sockets and two Cat5e ran to the same location. I had made provisions for a TV in the corner of the room which is currently unused. A case of the Irish "good sitting room". Herself has labelled it the junk room.

I can get a copex from the back of the telecomms box to this location, giving NBI a cableway in. Mount the ONT here and then use one of the Cat5e back to the patch panel. Ideally I'd like the ONT back at the patch panel but that's really a case of me being pedantic.

So it turns out there was a fault somewhere close-ish which took out over 1000 connections (Strangely close to the plowing)
    Outage from 17:30 to 12:30.

The biggest disappointment was that NBI had a fault notification to ISPs, but the lass at Pure didn't bother to even check even when I spelt out that it was effecting many houses using different ISPs.

Not the greatest support experience so far…

Got the pre order email yesterday from NBI, I'm currently with Imagine using a 4G/5G sim card, it works well giving me a fairly constant 100mbps, I was with Rural WiFi, whose customer service was the best I've ever experienced, but unfortunately they were bought out by Imagine during the summer. On researching Imagine, their customer service seems appalling, so I don't want to go fibre with them. I know this is like the famous " how long is a piece of string " question, but can anybody recommend a provider who has a good customer service, provide a good quality router and generally are good to deal with ? I don't mind paying a bit more to get the best service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,004 ✭✭✭The Continental Op

Wouldn't it be better to go with a provider where you never needed to call customer service?

I went with Pure Telecom, connected a month today and no issues so far.

Selected them based on positive reviews, price and no annual CPI increase.

As the previous post said hopefully we'll not have to contact customer support but living in the country we'll have to expect line damage due to weather but that's an NBI infrastructure problem.

Can recommend Arden or Digiweb.. Both have amazing customer service and support and either will supply you with a decent router that isn't locked down.

Connected on NBI with Digiweb initially in 2021. Had zero issues or downtime, Just switched to Arden as they are local to me.

I'm using Digiweb for the last 4-5 months.

I have had to contact customer support a couple of times (for a small billing issue and a short outage). Got to speak to somebody in Dundalk in less than a minute on both occasions and matters resolved very quickly.

While I was happy at the swift resolution, I had been with Starlink for 3 years before that and never once needed to contact CS, so I was a little disappointed that I had to do so. I'm keeping my Starlink kit installed in case storm damage ever knocks out the fibre.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,544 ✭✭✭galtee boy

It sure would, but as others have said, where's there are poles and overhead cables involved, you always run the risk of storm damage etc. I

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I notice that nobody mentioned the big three, as in Vodafone, eir or Sky !!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,004 ✭✭✭The Continental Op

I'll be going for vodafone on price. Most people in the area have it and none have any issues once installed, storms excepted which cut everyone off.

Wake me up when it's all over.

Cant find an answer on the search function for my question,

Just see on NBI website its come up as "Pre-Order Now Available",How long does it take for the eir/vodafone or sky website take for example to update so it can come up for the eircode?

When I go into eir for example it still just give me the 5G option.

@Bummer1234 It took 2 days for Eir to update for me and Sky + Virgin were about 1 week after it stated Pre-order on the NBI site. I placed my pre-order on 31st Aug still awaiting a install date looking like it will be Mid-Oct from my conversations with NBI
